Tomorrow's game vs. Iowa will be the Orange's 1st meeting with the Hawkeyes since the last game of the Louie & Bouie Show, 3/14/80 NCAA.
Playing in essentially a home game for Syracuse on Thursday night, Michael Gbinije was often in position to be the one to enliven the Madison Square Garden crowd.
He capitalized on a few of them, but not enough in the No. 23 Orange’s (2-1) 73-59 defeat at the hands of California (3-0) in the semifinals of the 2K Classic. The junior forward tied to lead SU with 13 points and did so on 5-of-10 shooting, but missed out on a few golden opportunities to forcefully swing momentum in Syracuse’s favor.
“I think Mike has got to keep being aggressive,” SU head coach Jim Boeheim said. “He’s got to be more of a scorer for us. I thought he made some plays tonight, but he’s going to have to make some more plays.”
Eight minutes into the game, Gbinije came up with a steal on the defensive end, but his bounce pass ahead was well behind guard Ron Patterson and picked off by California’s Sam Singer. Less than two minutes later, Gbinije threw down a transition dunk that gave the Orange a 12-11 lead — the last advantage SU would have all night.

With a flick of the wrist, Chris McCullough gave a quick tease to just how versatile he can be.
Four minutes into Syracuse’s matchup with California, the freshman saw space in front of him, pulled the trigger on his first career 3-pointer and nailed it.
But his weaknesses were also on display, losing the ball twice around the rim as he attacked the basket — the second of which led to California guard Jabari Bird dunking easily on the break and SU head coach Jim Boeheim folding his arms and calling timeout as the Golden Bears pulled away in the second half.
While McCullough’s offensive game was efficient and he defended the rim well with five blocks on the night, the freshman didn’t match up well physically during the No. 23 Orange’s (2-1) 73-59 loss to the Golden Bears (3-0) in Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.
“Chris has some really good basketball skills, but his stamina and physicality — that only comes over time,” Boeheim said. “He’s a smart player, he knows what he’s doing, he understands the game, but he’s not physical enough for the college game right now. And his stamina is not as good as it needs to be.”

From Texas: Isaiah Taylor will not play in tonight’s game vs. Cal (at MSG) due to a left wrist injury suffered against Iowa Thur night.
Syracuse has its work cut out before ACC play.
I wrote during the summer that scoring would be an issue for the Orange this season and after watching Jim Boeheim's practice a few weeks ago in Upstate New York I felt the same way. Then Thursday night against Cal happened. Syracuse played in a virtual home game at Madison Square Garden against a quality opponent and were only able to muster 59 points in the entire game. Is it time for Orange fans to go Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men and order a Code Red on the season? Not yet, but this team better be careful over the next month. Syracuse will face a potent offensive team Friday in Iowa in the consolation game of the 2K Sports Classic at Madison Square Garden and then will also host both St. John's and Louisiana Tech at the Carrier Dome in the next month to go along with road games at Michigan and Villanova. That's five difficult games before the Orange play a second in what many believe will be the best conference in college basketball.
