From the NC State board

There's a post on the PEEGs Indiana board about last night's game being the most physical he's seen in 45 years. I think its safe to say the game we played last night from a Syracuse perspective was the most physical game since about 2 weeks ago in NYC.
that's funny

We are one of the least physical teams from the BE, and I think it's an advantage come tournament time. Our most physical BE teams always crap out early because the can't adjust the refs.

I also think Indiana plays kind of soft.

RE: Sweet 16 and beyond NCAA tournament thread

Wow, Syracuse is sure allowed to play physical. If their football team hits half as hard as their basketball team it will be a long day in Carter Finley this fall.
Having lurked on a few ACC boards today there is discussion about if the finesse style of the ACC is hurting their teams in the NCAA and whether they need to adopt a more physical style like the Big East teams. Interesting. UVA board was debating this topic too.

SU is about the most finesse team of the top tier in the BE. So much for the rough and tumble B10.

I think the Indiana fans have forgotten how Bobby Knight's teams played.

I'm beginning to think there may be something to the notion that in the ACC we will be able to get out and run and play "Real Basketball", as opposed to the rough stuff they allowed in the Big East. I'm all for that. We used to be able to do that against every one but Georgetown and then Connecticut copied them and then Pittsburgh and then Louisville and then Marquette. pretty soon every game was a 60-50 wrestling match.

This thread reminds me of a George Carlin joke: Everyone who drive slower than you is an idiot. Everyone who drives faster than you is a maniac. We foul a lot in certain situations and don't expect the fouls to be called yet we complain like crazy when other teams clutch and grab and get away with it.

Example: When we trap, our guys basically walk through the trapped player to knock him over. That's a foul but it's almost never called. We do this every time.

We'll have some adjusting to do for the ACC, though quite a bit less than Pitt. I'm definitely looking forward to not being grabbed all the time.

I think SU's going to enjoy playing outside of the No-Blood-No-Foul League next year. Of course they'll have to learn to deal with the ACC Floppers. Maybe that just means using a deep bench to patch the lineup when players foul out. Oh, well, live and learn.-VBOF

In a trap? You could also say the offensive player commits a foul too trying to step through (or more appropriately force their way through - it's a back and forth) - a trap almost always devolves into Thunderdome. Offensive player pushes his way out (against IU the guy literally pushed James with his off arm w/ full extension at one point - then the defense jumps back in), defensive player pushes his way back in.

I think this thread is more about the open court hip riding, two-hands on the hip hand-checking, slap-happy foul fest some of our games turn into against the "scrappier" teams. We get the calls sometimes, no doubt, but the games are always ugly and they get away with it. Pitino admits they do it...

Michigan St. has had a nice run under Izzo with a NC and 5 other final fours. I don't recall any games where the refs bailed them out.

Besides Izzo. Matta's teams are all clutch and grab, and the refs have helped them plenty. Did you forget last year?

The problem last year was that the refs called too many fouls and disrupted the flow of the game.
