Certainly not the way any team would want to be pronounced League Champion, but what else can be done. They were a somber group when receiving the trophy. They had a terrific year and deserve it given the current circumstances. Congratulations.

From the ACC Bylaws:

The following sports receive an automatic qualification (by team) to the NCAA Championship by winning their respective ACC Championship. In the event that the ACC Championship cannot be held or completed the highest seed remaining in the Championship at the time designated below will be the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championship.

For years the Ivy and the Pac10 didn't have postseason tournaments. Regular season winner got the AQ.

i understand getting the automatic bid based on the season but that's different from named tourney champion.

The ACC does not acknowledge regular season champions. The league champion is the ACC tournament champion. Some conferences recognize a regular season champion and a tournament champion -- not the ACC.

Given there was no tournament it makes sense to give the league championship to the team that did the best in the regular season. (and also noted the bylaws above)
