fwiw..Marrone, Edsall and Holz make Forbes 2011 Greediest Coaches list

BS.

Filler.

Waste of time even skimming.

Next topic: "How to lose 25lbs in three days!"

8. Doug Marrone, Syracuse Orange

Greed Premium: 433%
Coach's Pay: $1.5M
School's average head coach salary: $196,772
2011 Record: 5-7

Wow. Take JB's salary out of the equation and SU must really be underpaying the other head coaches.

underpaying? what do you think a women's softball coach or a men's cross country coach should earn?

No, I meant in relation to most of the other schools that were listed. We were close to the lowest and that was including JB's salary, which I'm guessing is higher than Marrones. Of course most of the school's listed were public institutions, and there is no way SU could compete with the tax payers when paying it's coaches.

I thought SU, being a private institution, didn't have to report coaching salaries. Are we even sure those numbers are legit?

From the article:

But some football coaches rake in large portions of their schools’ coaching budgets while failing to deliver on the gridiron. We have dubbed the 10 worst offenders as College Football’s Greediest Coaches. The list relies on our Greed Premium metric, which measures each coach’s salary as a percentage of the average salary for head coaches of all sports at his school last year. We applied this metric to coaches with losing records in 2011, utilizing data from USA Today’s database of college football head coach salaries and the U.S. Department of Education’s financial records for each school.

Seems to just be saying that given how much of the school's coaching budget he accumulates you'd want a better ROI in terms of wins.:noidea:

$1.5M?

Total budget for all mens head coaches is $1.83M.
They're adding the endorsements, and all the other parts of his salary that the school doesn't pay for. His actual school paid salary is like $1.0M as per The Daily Orange. I also don't think your figure is correct because JB makes over a million a year as well. SU has less sports than most schools, especially the more expensive ones like hockey and baseball.

It's not my figure. The university reported $1.8M total for ALL mens head coaches.

What bothers me is that these figures don't in any way match the shock factor of the words they use in their headline. "Greedy?" Greedy wouldn't even appear on the list of words I'd use to describe Doug Marrone.

If they wanted to write an article about least valuable in terms of salary v wins, that would be fine. The difference is that headline wouldn't draw hits as much as "greediest coach" does.

The University clearly does not have the right figure out in public then lol

It may be straight salaries, not counting all other forms of compensation. But evening that is true, that # seems off somehow, unless all other coaches added together only make a couple hundred K. Doesn't seem possible.
