Yeah, we played like crap tonight. Not gonna play at peak level every night.

However, winning 38 straight non-conference games is rather amazing. Last time we lost was the Cleveland State buzzer beater. I think we won 9 games in a row before that, so we are fairly close to 49-1 in our last 50 non-con games. Not too shabby.

Didn't know that, there were even a few good teams thrown in there too. Most were (lets face it) cupcakes.

i dont really get posts like this. obviously most of the games were cupcakes, but there are proportionately just plenty of good teams sprinkled in there too. it is still an interesting fact.

Our last non-conference loss was to Butler to end the 2010 season in the tourney. We have won 24 straight non-conference games in a row since then.

This is the first year in a long time Cuse's ooc schedule hasn't been embarrassingly lame... And the Florida game wasn't even their choosing... And game was still at carrier

do you really need someone to go through the numbers and prove you ridiculously wrong?

Out of curiosity, how many of those 38 games were against NCAA tournament teams? Like 5 or 6? Impressive, but some context.

Since the streak began (w/ the CSU loss) we've played 1 OOC game on an opponent's home court. It was at Memphis about 3 weeks later.

Its like that for any team. You always here stuff like "kansas has won 50 straight non-conference home games", or "duke hasnt lost a non-conference home game since 2005", or whatever. How many of those games are against ncaa tourny teams? Not many.

And our SOS the last three years was 22, 11 and 7. That's out of 340+ Division one colleges.

Would take too long to figure out who made the tourney or not but going back three years to Nov 2008 I would chalk up the following non-conference wins as solid:

  • Florida (three times - Neutral, in KS, at Dome)
  • Kansas (in Kansas City)
  • Virginia
  • Memphis (home and away)
  • Cal (MSG)
  • North Carolina (MSG)
  • Michigan
  • Georgia Tech
  • North Carolina State
  • Michigan State (MSG)
  • Virginia Tech (MSG)
  • Stanford (MSG)
They also played decent mid-majors in Drexel, Cornell (Sweet 16 team), Iona, Northern Iowa. Robert Morris, Oakland and Morgan St were NCAA teams at some point the past few years.

In that span (3+ years) Syracuse has lost three out of conference games - Cleveland St, Oklahoma (ncaa) and Butler (ncaa)

Dont give poppy any stats that are actually complimentary to syracuse, he'll have none of it.

The "neutral" florida game was in tampa, not their homecourt but definitely not a neutral court. Just like the kansas game in kansas city technically is neutral but its not. Hey if people dont consider msg a neutral court for us then it should work both ways.

Yup, Butler 2010 is the last non-conference loss but I count 23 in a row.

Way back in the last years of Manley we had the longest home court winning streak in the Nation. That and $5 will get you a cup of coffee. We need to show when it counts. This team is good but flawed. We lack a go to big, someone that can draw fouls to thin out the front court of an opposing title contender. To some degree we can work around our flaws, but this is probably not our year. Maybe next?

I should have qualified it by saying 38 non-conference regular season wins in a row. I figured most would have made the natural restriction.

You're right to an extent.

But Duke has already beaten Belmont, Michigan State, Michigan, and Kansas this year. Only one of those was at home. (Also lost to Ohio State). That's 4 likely NCAA tournament teams. Plus they play Washington and Temple. Last year they beat Marquette, Temple, Kansas State, Michigan State, UAB, and Butler, plus lost to St. Johns.

So in the last 2 years, I count 13-14 NCAA tournament teams they've played OOC. (Depending on how you feel about Belmont and Washington.) And very few of those at home (Belmont, Michigan State, Temple last year).

This year we have Florida, (1) who is a definite tournament team. Stanford is looking pretty good, I will throw them in. (2) State is already 5-3, with 3 pretty good losses. Don't think you can call them a tournament team.

Last year we had Michigan (3) at home, and Mich State (4) neutral. The year prior we had Cal (5) at MSG, Cornell (6) at home, Florida (7) in Tampa. The year prior, you had Florida (8) in KC, Kansas (9), and Memphis at Memphis (10), plus Cornell (11). (Did I mention I liked the schedule that year?) In 2008, we played Cornell (12). In 2007, I don't see anyone OOC. 2006, we had Florida (13) and Bucknell. (14)

So basically, Duke has played as many NCAA tournament teams OOC in the last 2 years as we have played in the last 6 years.

Edit: To be fair, I may have missed a team like Robert Morris for SU or something like that.

Without fact checking, I am assuming all of your data is correct. But what people aren't saying is that the Cuse plays one of the hardest in conference schedules of anyone. The only tough team that Duke plays in conference is UNC. We play Louisville, Yukon, Pitt, Marquette, Villanova, etc. etc etc. That more than makes up for a possibly less than stellar OOC and our annual SOS proves that.

That is definitely true. (And don't assume all my data is correct, I did it pretty quick, and just in my head...)

But I was just talking about the 38 game non conference winning streak. We haven't played a whole lot of tough teams during that time, and I don't think any of those 38 games were true road games? (Though maybe Florida in Tampa is pretty close)

This thread is about NON CONFERENCE win streaks. You are citing overall SOS's and missing the point.

Memhis was a true road game, and Kansas in Kansas City was nominally neutral but 95% KU fans.

People have already forgotten this, but the Florida game in Tampa was pretty close to an even split - there are a ton of SU alums and snowbirds down there and it was loud for SU as we pulled away.

Your point is well taken - our non-conference schedule is not as strong as most other nationally elite schools. Still, 38 in a row will be a nice number. We only can beat the teams we play (and it's a foregone conclusion that we won't be playing more than one non-conference road game as long as Boeheim is the coach and the football program is losing money).

I'm sorry on the Memphis game, I had it in my mind that that happened before we lost to Cleveland State.

That was the "look what I found" win - right before Christmas, Devendorf was serving his suspension, and Calipari's guys completely folded. That had to be one of the five most surprising wins I've experienced as a Syracuse fan.

The were a terrible shooting team that year and the zone was expected to give them problems
