FWIW

Nova is now 3-1 after destroying Penn 41-7. They have scored over 40 points in every game except against us.

Fordham is now 4-1 after destroying Holy Cross 45-16. Fordham's only loss was a 50-6 beatdown from Nova. In their other games Fordham has scored 52, 54, 49, and 45, outscoring their opponents 200-53.

My point is I don't want to hear anymore casual posters bring up Nova. Nova is legit contender to win the FCS championship. I'm so sick of hearing about how horrible we were against Nova when the fact is that Nova is elite at their level and would give 1/2 of P5 teams a run for their money. Every week I will continue to follow Nova and Fordham as they make their runs towards the FCS championship.
simply put, at this time we are borderline stink. coaching issues galore,we are supposed to be div 1, yet thread addresses fcs---that alone suggests the reality of our situation---i am not a casual fan. what i am surprised at is that you are still groping for an explanation of the villanova game. i believe that it is obvious now

The close win vs Nova was akin to a close win vs Rutgers or Indiana most seasons. Not good but understandable. Too many people getting caught up in FBS v FCS.

We should be the caliber of team that can beat all of the teams above handily - and yet, here we are.

Oh, and I agree with the poster who said who cares about the VU game - I want to see progress in the "W" column. Its great that the team plays hard but they are not getting it done right now, something needs a fixin' for certain.

That's not to say that I don't see glimpses of what we could be if we executed all our plays and played with discipline, but we don't. These are things the coaches should be addressing during practice.

I see this SU team as what it is and I'll cheer them on every game but, honestly, I was not disappointed with the UND outcome; UND is more talented and better coached IMO. Its easier to watch these games and try to see improvement without those darn orange-colored glasses on sometimes ... its just difficult to pull those glasses off sometimes :)

The ND result in itself wasn't "awful", I suppose, but in the vacuum of NEVER being competitive against good teams, it's quite pathetic.

I watched Purdue, BC and NC State do it just this year so I'm sick of hearing about how we should just accept getting the **** kicked out of us every time we play a Top 30 team or God forbid the triple option fiasco.

That would put him on track for 4000 yards passing , 1200 rushing and 50 TD's. I would use a 1st round pick on him. He's a later day Roger Staubach.
1st round pick? Lol. Come on now. Look at mariota and then the nova dude. This ain't a knock on novas qb.

Win Friday and we're an above .500 team with an inside track to a bowl game. Lose and we're essentially a 1-4 team and going backwards fast.

lol ...

(nothing against what you two are discussing but just had to laugh at this, lol)

I wish I knew what we were talking about.

Perhaps I'm better off not knowing. I just don't like my posts hijacked by someone who then refuses to explain what he's talking about.

At the risk of offending half of the people here IMO we are one 'good' QB from being a top 25-30 team. Not saying Hunt is bad in any regard but he lacks the tool set and ability to read coverages at this junction of his career to considered anything above average or serviceable.

I think if SU had a receiver that could get behind the defense and score they'd be a top 30 team. catching a 25+ yard pass is a good thing, taking to the house just finishes it and there are no more offensive snaps inside the 30, you have already scored. It also opens up the other receivers.

Agreed. We're really not all that far away, even without that type of dynamic playmaker. I was hoping that Estime would prove to be that guy, and that by the last third of the season we'd start to see Ishmael develop into a reliable weapon, like Estime did last year.

Right now, that's what is hamstringing the offense more than anything.

SU is a 25 yard FG away from being 1-3. Sorry I don't feel good about where this team stands at this moment..
One could also argue that we were 1 play (TD instead of a pick-6) away from being 3-1.

Well , the one game where Robertson was playing a team that clearly outmanned his team , the Syracuse game , he did not make one error and did it while taking a lot of hits. He essentially won that game , albeit the score didn't reflect that and the Orange did not have their starting QB . Mariota is a system QB.

Getting back to the OP's original assertions. The upper echelon teams of the FCS are easily as good as the bottom half of the P5 division , that is 100% true . Notre Dame is a super elite talent level BCS team , 100% true. The Orange dispatched a decent MAC team in CMU with ease. That leaves Maryland. They have 2 NFL receivers , an NFL QB , a very good coach who has a team at the top of a talent cycle and who is under the gun to win. If they beat Ohio State Saturday , Syracuse's strength of schedule will go thru the roof. A ND win over Stanford will jack the SOS up quite a few more notches as well.
