Ok so I know the regular breakdowns from tomcat and general are likely pending so I figured I would offer my two cents for fun this morning while I await tonights cowboys eagles game to inevitably watch my cowboys fail again.

First off I have to say it felt weird playing a top 8 opponent and not feeling like it was a must win. Sure there were seeding implications and pod implications but we have already made our point winning some big games. At the point of 25-7 I was still at piece. It was either a matter of Nova was going to make difficult bad shot 3s all game and smoke us or the misses would pile up and this never say die team would come back with a vengeance. I feel the latter simply because of the current roster having pieces from last years team and their ability to keep coming until the whistle blows. This years version looks even more the part.

Obviously the win was impressive. Some things that stand out to start are how hard players are working on offense to get open and create space. Part of the 20-0 run was simply nova defenders showing signs of fatigue chasing Trevor, denying CJ and staying in front of tyler. Once the game settled the cuse run was on. Tyler and trevor do such a great job playing off eachother you would think its been years they have shared the backcourt. The moment trevor got going so did tyler it seemed. They both are silent respectful killers as well. A couple other keys were thanks to roc and baye. Roc gets some undue criticism at times as the stats dont show how hard he is working. He could have had 8-10 pts if we fed him the ball a little more. He was working hard to fight down low and was fouled more than it was called. Baye came in and simply shut down the interior lanes in the zone allowing us to extend the zone. It completely flummoxed Nova. Roc kept the momentum when he was in there and the two were huge. Final two keys to add were jerami's rebounding and mike g's d. Grant was a beast on the boards. He is just an insane athlete with his old man and uncles knack to find the ball off a miss. He simply went up and got some balls that nova is used to swiping. Mike g gave trevor a needed blow and was a menace at the top of the zone. He stole some of mcw's zone d tactics and it really is a nice defensive weapon having his length up there. Nova struggled on offense and it kept them from making a push when they needed to.

Player analysis

ENNIS- its been repeated already but wow. Kid does it all and makes the smart play 99 percent of the time. Ive never seen anything like it. We all question whether calling him the best cuse pg we have seen thru 12 games is overkill but we all still see what we see. We waited on melo to see if he hit a wall. Its a different position but damn near similar impact.

Trevor- I posted before he has rautins accuracy and gerrys clutch factor. Add that to being built like a running back and having the ability to throw it down. Show me 5 true 2 guards better in college hoops. Kid again showed off using the pick and is doing this against defenses focused on him. He started the run to get us back in it and really finished it off with a big one late.

Mike G- hard working team player who is smart and a menace on d. He gave the starters a breather and gave us a boost. Loved baye finding him on that pass as that was mike g working hard. Kid is working his way to a glue guy type and is underrated in what he provides.

CJ- cj was denied harder than he has been all year and although he forced it a little early he is doing better picking his spots. That three with a man in his face was the biggest play of the game in my opinion. It solidified the you arent as good as us point. It also was a next level type of play. Otherwise we saw normal CJ. Love how he attacked the rim today too.

Jerami- his rebounding was huge. He is not smooth on offense and has to use his athleticism. With that said he is not forcing that jumper and always looking to attack. Needs to balance that out but his ferocity as a rebounder and threat to attack the rim adds a dimension. His improved ft shooting is huge as well.

Baye- defensive player of the game. Completely shut down the interior at times and was everywhere on the court along with a huge putback. Love this kid.

Rak- busted his hump on both ends and deserved the ball in the post more. We dont have a post offense but we could if we truly had to as roc can give us 6-10 a game down there. Again the numbers dont show the effort and impact he had drawing fouls and tiring pinkston and ochefu.

DC2- was active on both sides early . Gotta keep the ball up high. Still an asset against the right matchups and such a great pro team guy. Love dc2 despite his limitations.

Roberson- didnt mess up and grabbed a board while giving jb a chance to get the starters going on the bench. He needs to learn to be a tad more aggressive when the chance is given but you can see the instincts on the boards and in his finding space on offense and position d.

Good analysis.
Can't agree this was not a must win -- Nova won at home last Feb; we had to hold serve at the Dome, and had to show a national audience we deserve our spot in the rankings. Can't say there was much peace in my group watching the game at that point -- pulling hard for Cooney & Fair to do something, make it a game at least. And, of course, what happened was a come-back to rank with the Ok State game in 2003, and the G-Town game in 2010. Best possible way to win. Stake the opponent to a lead, get their fans excited, then blow their doors off with stellar runs.

When push comes to shove absolutely a must win for a team wanting the 1 seed in the east and not leaving ny to get to arlington for sure.

Excellent write-up! Especially on point with how hard Trevor and Rak were working out there.

Wait! What you are a Cowboys fan? How horrible that must be for you I recommend you give it up right away and go with a more geographical sense making match for your NFL fandom. Like the Yankees the Cowboys have an unbelievable number of fans for no real reason geographically of family fondom reasons plus they are in Texas and play in the NFC east its stupid.

Rak and BMK were both key to the win. Notice how many buckets Nova scored on drives to the rim...hardly any. Pinkston makes a living doing that and all he got yesterday was that lucky chuck 3 just beating the shot clock.

On a serious note I agree with much of what you posted. I thought back to all the games that teams came out and shot lights out often on well defended or simply deep deep 3's. We usually win those games and the teams usually wind up shooting 25+ 3's at around 30% for the game. This is what happened only Nova shot a huge number of 3's especially compared to the over all number of shots they took.

I really like your point about Ennis and Cooney's success being tied to each other and them playing excellent together. They play like they grew up together taking money from bigger stronger kids on the playgrounds.

I actually have legit roots behind being a boys fan. So its ride until jerry croaks and hope for the best.

Thank god you have a reason I worry about those that don't. All my fandom's make sense.

Syracuse
Knick's
G-Men (Bill's second my Gramps lived there his whole life and took me to games)
Mets (no idea why I root for them over the Yankee's probably because I was 10 when they won the Series but I stick with them)
Rangers

I think a legit group for an upstate NY kid from Oswego who's parents are from Roch and Buf

I have never seen a Syracuse team with 5 guys at the end of the game that could hit free throws like Rock, CJ, Jerami, Trevor and Tyler. Silent G doesn't look too shabby either. Wouldn't worry about any of them stepping up. We have always had liabilities in the past. That is huge in close games, taking a lot of pressure off the defense and offense.

Ha well cowboys fan due to uncle being from irving and my dads first experience with football was meeting tex schramm. Combining factors led to tradition in family.

Otherwise its cuse, knicks, mets all the way.

I'm not sure if it was Pinkston or Ochefu, but early in the second half he was absolutely killing Rak in the post w/out getting called for it. He may have racked up a good 10 fouls in that little stretch alone. Kind of shock the whistle never came with how much he was grabbing him - and how many fouls were being called.

Good performance by Baye as well - agreed.

More importantly, if Nova maintains their level of play, this game could go a long way towards obtaining a spot in the East regional - MSG in NYC.

Great analysis. Still waiting for SilentG to get more confidence in his offensive game. It's like he thinks when he's in with TE, he's still a 1 instead of the 2. Passed up a couple of open looks that resulted in TE having to drive to the basket late and missing.

Also, I love DC2 as well for his heart and effort on the floor and team cheerleading from the bench. Still wish Rak started at center and Jerami at PF when we face a smaller team like Nova. Not sure Nova gets such a huge lead if JB were only a little more flexible in this regard.

But JB is what JB is, which is still one helluva coach.

Cheers,
Neil
