Sorry if already posted, haven't been around ... I know every1 loved the way Cj played, but I thought him and Baye were absolutely awful on the glass ... seemed like those 2 missed assignments on every offensive board

Difficult to make that judgement on CJ when he had 9 boards...and yes he did miss some assignments...was surprised at Melo's and Keita's and Christmas' lack of boards given their size advantage. This lack of our big men boarding in BE competiton will result in losses.

I didn't think we did a terrible job on the boards. The nature of the zone is that teams shoot a low percentage but get some offensive rebounds.

On the individuals, our centers never get that many boards. Their job is to step out to challenge guys at the foul line and the forwards pinch in and clean up the glass.

What rebounding "assignments" did he miss?

Well CJ and Kris had more rebounds than any other players in the game correct? How many forwards get 10 rebounds a game? Playing Rak and James would have taken time away from Kris or CJ . . . you know the two guys that were rebounding well.

How many second chance points did VT score?
How many transition points did SU score?

That's the trade off for crashing the glass against our zone and we won that trade off. douglas20 did a great job explaining this in a post earlier this morning.

They didn't put bodies on their men

The zone is susceptible to giving up offensive rebounds. It has nothing to do with missed assignments.

By the way--CJ had 9 rebounds last night. He wasn't "absolutely awful" on the glass by any reasonable standard.

Fron "Net Points, etc.":

Rebounding: Syracuse had 12 offensive and 31 defensive rebounds. Virginia Tech had 8 offensive and 28 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 39% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 29% of the time. Virginia Tech had 16 turnovers, of which 8 were Syracuse steals, (50%). Syracuse had 9 turnovers of which 5 were Virginia Tech steals, (56%). We had 48 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 36.

I think what made us seem deficient on the defensive glass was that Va Tech had a bunch of possessions where we played pretty good defense and they also played stall ball...Then they would jack up a shot with the shot clock down under :05 and then they would grab an offensive rebound. Those kind of possessions are very frustrating. I know it was driving me nuts. We seemed to do a better job of eliminating that scenario in the 2nd half.

I don't think those figures are right. According to ESPN's box, our players had 18 defensive rebounds (28 total rebounds minus 10 offensive rebounds). VPI players had 16 defensive rebounds (23 total rebounds minus 7 offensive rebounds).

From those numbers (and, loike you, I set aside team rebounds), our players grabbed the rebound 72% of the time when a player rebounded a VPI miss (our 18 defensive boards vs. VPI's 7 offensive boards). Whewn we missed, our players grabbed the rebound 38% of the time (our 10 offensive rebounds vs. VPI's 16 defensive rebounds).

Statistically speaking, those are good numbers for us, particularly on the defensive end.

I got mine from SU's box score. We are making the same point, however.

Agree we are making the same point, though SU's box score apparently has us getting more defensive rebounds than VPI missed shots.

My bad. VT had 8 offensive and 19 defesnive rebounds. SU had 20 defensive rebounds so they rebounded 8 of 28 misses. They missed 27 field goals but also two free throws.
