No Upside/Downside for an exhibition game, just some general observations

THE GAME ITSELF

Our defense was impressive early. Cal State tried to penetrate and found themselves confronted with a taller player every time. We were very active on the perimeter as well. The players were moving their hands and feet well. At the 6:10 mark before the half, Cal State had only 8 points.
The problem is, we weren’t scoring much either. We were playing like it was Midnight Madness, each player deciding to drive to the basket on his own and getting tangled up in their defense. Cal State packed it in the paint and force SU players to throw up wild floaters. We couldn’t make them pay from outside Brandon Triche and Scoop Jardine were 1 for 7 in the first half and Kris Joseph was 1 for 4. The offense bogged down and Quinton Watkins started to hit some threes for State and by halftime it was an unimpressive 29-22.

The second half we played more team ball and went on an early run to blow the lead out to 20+ and it was garbage time after that. JB used multiple defenses. We played well early in man to man. The press was beaten easily. We will, of course. wind up in the Boeheim zone but this team should play it well. Everybody is long and quick, even the guards and they played a very aggressive zone tonight, forcing 21 turnovers, making 11 steals and blocking a dozen shots. My major concern after the game is whether we’ve got enough outside shooting in the starting line-up. But that’s a concern seemingly every year and it’s the same guys we had last year so I guess it won’t be any worse than last year. But when we go 3 for 16 from the arc, the game’s going to be a struggle on the offensive end. Our best shooters are on the bench when the game starts.

CENTERS

I remember viewing some early U-Tube clips of Fab Melo when we recruited him. Not just the practice one where he’s making the foul shots, but some real game action. He seemed to have plenty of baby fat and appeared slow. Then I saw him in the McDonald’s All-American game and he was slimmed down and much quicker and more athletic. He was all over the court, running, dunking, grabbing rebounds and blocking shots. Then we saw the disaster of last year: out of shape, huffing and puffing after a few minutes, in pain form a injury, having fouls called on him every time he moved, watching the game rush by him and not knowing what’s going on. Tonight he looked like the guy we saw in the McDonald’s game. He played 18 minutes and never seemed winded. He ran up and down the court, scoring 12 points, blocking 2 shots, grabbing 8 rebounds. He made one of those jump shots we saw on U-Tube and was 2/3 from the line. His form looks good. The AO/RJ days at the line are over. We have a big man who can make them pay at the line. Just a totally different player from last year.

Baye Moussa Keita also played well,. In 17 minutes he had 9 rebounds, two blocks and scored twice. I was looking or one of our big men- Melo, Keita or Christmas to show us some back to the basket moves like the ones we got used to with AO and Rick. Unexpectedly, it was Keita who did this. He got the ball with his back to the basket and a defender on his back. He dribbled twice and moved past the guy. He missed the shot and CJ Fair got some oohs and Ahhs with his follow shot but I was impressed that Keita not only could make such a move but did so with no hesitation. A lot of times when players are primarily asked to play defense and rebound, they hesitate to make offensive moves, as if that’s somebody else’s job or they are afraid of getting yelled at. Keita looked like a guy who had been working on that move and fully intends to make it a part of his game. In the second half he had a beautiful turn-around hook shot over two defenders several feet from the basket. Melo and Keita struggled painfully through much of last year. It’s payback time.

FORWARDS

Christmas played aggressively, getting 6 rebounds and 3 blocks in 19 minutes. He scored twice from in close but showed no real shot or offensive moves. He’s strictly an off the boards guy right now. He played center briefly late in the game. He started and will contribute but we’ll see a lot of CJ at the power spot. Fair was only 2 for 6 but made a three pointer, had 6 rebounds and two blocks of his own. Kris Joseph was Kris Joseph and scored 11 points. James Southerland was mostly ineffectual. He needs to shoot his way into the line-up and neither of this treys were close.

GUARDS

Scoop Jardine was effective with 9 points and 7 assists to 2 turnovers. Brandon Triche had a rough 2 for 11 night, 0 for 3 from the arc. He’s our best shooting starter and the game will be harder for the team when he shoots like that. He did have one nice steal where he poked the ball away and reached under the player’s legs a couple of times before tapping the ball to himself. Dion Waiters had a couple of tomahawk dunks but was also 0 for 3 from outside. I liked a second half play where he had the point and Carter-Williams was acting as the shooting guard. Waiters directed Carter-Williams where he wanted him to be. I got the impression he liked being in charge. He’s more than just a “2” guard. Carter Williams looks almost like a point forward with his height and long arms. He was pressing a little too hard in this game and had a long overthrow of a lead pass. He stood in the backcourt, grimacing. He did have 6 points and 5 assists in 20 minutes. I liked Trevor Cooney a lot. He came in late in the first half and seconds later found himself open for a long shot. He kind of fumbled the ball for a second but got it up and in. While it was in the air, Waiters threw his arms up to signal a “three” and Matt Park commented that he must have seem Cooney hit plenty of threes in practice. He scored twice more, once on a good move through the crowded lane. He’ll be a good one. Mookie Jones actually fouled out in this game. Even more amazingly, he didn’t shoot a couple of times when he was open. I thought I’d never live to see the day….

Our best shooters are on the bench when the game starts.

Our 3 best "pure shooters" are probably the last 3 guys on the team right now. Southerland, Jones and Cooney.

I really don't see Fair playing a whole lot at the 4. No more than 15 minutes a game, if that.

Great Summary ... I had the benefit of watching as much of the game as Iphone batteries allow via my dad filming via facetime... couple of additional thoughts..

Fab - Loved the movement and aggresiveness.. I mentioned it a few weeks ago but if he could add a consistant ability a la a Tim Duncan to hit the 10-15 footer .. its pretty much unstoppable. Will be curious to see how he handles BE Centers and the physicality.. will he be able to show off his skillset more and become a menace in the middle?

Baye- Wiry as all get out.. and not as aggressive on D as I would like but .. a really good rebounder. He is a rich mans Okwandu.. with a nice touch on his jumper. Both our centers have possible pro paychecks waiting for them someday. Its going to be nice that teams cannot play us strictly to go after the big guys.. the depth is great.. seems like Center is going to be one of the strongest positions on the team.

Rakeem - really really raw.. plays hard though... as you said.. strictly shot blocking and cleaning up the glass. Still - he is more active than Dashonte and the early PT will be key so he can grow into a contributor.. his size and athleticism only add to the frontcourt

CJ - I think he becomes the most important guy this year. Having a nice touch outside, the ability to slash to the lane and the ability to attack the glass he has it all. By mid year he is the most explosive player on the team IMO. I think this will ultimately be key to helping Kris have less of a load - a typical stat stuffing game for CJ

Kris- echo the sentiments from others.. still getting his legs.. he has lots of help this year and with all the threats in the post now.. lanes should open up. Good game for him considering he hasnt really practiced

Southerland - good entertainer... maybe he will have a few games where he gets hot ... dont see him contributing.. just not enough growth.. great kid though and it doesnt hurt to have a top notch athlete with a pure stroke collecting dust on the bench

Mookie- you know what.. gotta love mook.. just goes out and enjoys himself.. every minute of PT is MM for mook.. still kid can shoot the lights out... another dust collecter.. but a great body for practice to help with locating shooters in the zone

Scoop - solid , steady PG play. Did what he had to without forcing the issue much. I think we are in good hands this year. He has a solid handle on running the team already

Brandon - I doubt we will see a lot of 2-11 games from him. He is bouncier this year and his stroke looks more fluid. Its really important he stays aggressive and looks for his shot. Next to CJ and Dion.. easily the most explosive player on this team.

Dion - Reminds me a bit of the Nova guards. ala Kyle Lowry.. just fearless but at times out of control. He can flat out play.. and flat out fail at times..The swagger he brings is important.. he can get to the hole and really finish strong. The jumper will be on and off ... the key for him will be to make sure he attacks when its off..

Cooney - SWC im glad you added a positive note on Trevor.. I disagree he isnt ready to contribute.. Yes his D needs work and yes he is a little shaky but d*mn he can stroke it. He is pure offense and less of a liability than Mook/Southerland. He is not an every game type of guy.. but a guy you can use against a zone. I think he will learn quickly.. and more so than some think.

MCW.. He made some mistakes.. as to be expected but he is a heck of a talent. Really understands the game and will only get better. Is a better shooter than it shows. I can easily see him at 36-40 percent from outside. Much like CJ he brings an all around element to the team that is hard to find. Point forward more than Point Guard.. love that comparison...

Nice summary SWC; also Orangezoo.
Agree with all the points about the centers and Rak. This was only an exhibition game against a weak opponent, but what these three showed is a big step up from last year. (For Rak, I am comparing to what I saw on a televised game.) All good.
Conversely, and keeping in mind it was only one exhibition, Kris and Brandon did not look like guys who will break out and carry this team. Kris has the excuse with his knee & hasn't practiced. Still, looked like these guys are the same as last year (decent starters), with the same strengths, same flaws.
CJ -- is he even close to 6 ft 8 in? He has a lot of upside -- just think it is premature to label him "most important" or "most explosive". I like his game a lot; he is clearly a factor, just cautioning that we shouldn't get ahead of ourselves.
Southerland -- if he is going to play, he needs to slash and finish, in addition to hitting long range shots. Looks like he is working on taking it to the hoop. I am not giving up on him. He won't be an inside player, but his skills might help if Kris isn't fully healthy.
Cooney & MCW -- both showed something in their first exhibition. MCW needs to value ball security, but he will be a good distributor, showed a good shot, and showed some ability to beat his man. Cooney -- looked ready physically.
Overall -- inside play of Melo, Keita, Rak was promising; perimeter play raised some concerns.

Nice summary, SWC.

Regarding Melo hitting a jumper, it seems like it's been a while since SU has had a big man who could smoothly sink outside shots. Even with his struggles last year, I remember Fab making a few jumpers throughout the season.

When is the last time SU had a big guy who could shoot 15-footers like Fab?

Triche looked like a rattled freshman in the first 10 minutes ... it was strange. He couldn't even take the ball up the court without losing handle of the ball. He was clearly unnerved by his early performance. He needs to be able to forget mistakes and move on... he can't let his confidence hang from a string so much.

Danny Schayes. But it will be along time before I compare Fab's shot to Danny. He's just made one medium range jumper so far.

Personally, I thought the Press, atleast the ball-man and the guy guarding the the player closest to the ball did a nice job rotating and trapping. Having Christmas on the ball and Fair on the PG could really pay dividends in crunch time. They are long armed dudes.

I wish I could have watched the game. I don't get SNY with my package and I couldn't find it on the internet. I am not to concerned by anything I have heard. It takes time to get back into the swing of playing structured competative games. Creating chemistry and knowing what to do in game situations.

You are correct about handling the ball (and I am sure some are going to say it is an excuse because they didn't really watch the game), but after it happened to Triche twice, it also happened to Scoop once, Dion once, Southerland once and CSLA players twice that we saw. For whatever reason, the first 10 minutes players struggled to grip the ball. We kept saying they needed to change balls. Had to be moisture of some sort or a bad ball. Didn't happen to anyone after the first 10 minutes but we counted 7-8 times that the ball was slipping out of kids hands, even on routine moves.

It was hard to recognize Fab, he looked like a completely different player. Nice to see he put in the hard work when we didn't hear much good news about him over the summer

I think you're forgetting Otis "My Man" Hill.

I really don't see Fair playing a whole lot at the 4. No more than 15 minutes a game, if that.

I agree and disagree with this. I think Christmas will be much better as a freshmen than Melo, but most freshmen hit a wall once we get to Big East play and whether Xmas hits this wall will determine how much time CJ sees at the 4.

On the other hand I hope that if Joseph has not really improved at the 3, whether it is his knee or not, JB realizes that with CJ he does not need to give KJo 35 minutes a game. Same with Scoop and Triche, these 3 had the chance last year to step up and be leaders/go to guys, and I hope if they do not perform JB does not hesitate to give Dion/MCW/CJ the chance to shine.

I think you're forgetting Otis "My Man" Hill.

Hill was no jump shooter. But I did forget Elvir Ovcina, who could shoot but couldn't do anything else. He was a 7 foot Mookie Jones.

Good summary SWC. Despite the fact a lot of shots weren't dropping, I was very impressed by some of the efficiency that jumped out at me as far as a lot of these guys' stats per minutes.

I thought about Ovcina, but by the end of the career, I remember groaning every time he hoisted a trey. He shot 3s decently in 96-97 (35%) before sinking to 22.4% in 97-98.

When Melo shoots a 15-footer, I'm optimistic it will go in. Let's hope is stays that way.

I think you're forgetting - watch some old film. Hill had real jumpshooting range out to 15'. He showed it off a little more when he moved to the 4 for part of the Burgan suspension during that horrible year.
