MD actually did put a long pole on Thomson in both games last year when he was at attack. Leo Rhoa and English had plenty of opportunities to dodge on short stick matchups as a result. Also MD held literally everyone to 1-2 goals in both games, so I do not think it is especially an indictment of Thomson that he scored so little in those. I think MD recognize the threat that he is with a short stick match up. It is harder to guard him when he gets open offball. If he sets a pick for Spallina or Leo/Anderson and forces a switch, then you have a short stick on that matchup.

But another main reason is that I think Anderson or Leo would have less opportunities to dodge from where they are most comfortable if they playing/initiating from x. Yes both have done it, but I would rather have one of them barrelling out of the box and potentially going against a short stick, instead of dodging from x with a guaranteed longpole matchup. They have more reps dodging from up top or the left wing on attack. But if for instance MD does put a short stick on Thomson this time and we do not make them pay in any way in the first half, then I hope we are willing to adapt and make some kind of change.
