Gerry McNamara Interview with Jon Rothstein

Really good interview! Answers a lot of our questions here and provides responses to his take on those questioning his approach to roster building. Sounds like he is very adamant about playing a game in MSG per year and one appears to be in the works right now. If it doesn't happen this upcoming season, it's not a lack of trying. Mentions one or two games they are looking to add that will be very appealing to the fan base. Unapologetically confident in his abilities!

Biggest thing I heard is we have to add a couple more pieces. Lot of good stuff in there otherwise but glad to hear that comment confirmed from Gerry himself even if no details provided.

That along with of course the MSG comments
I don't really want to play Donnie next year at St. John's so hoping it's Uconn or a power non-Northeast school like Michigan State, Kansas etc. something to juice things.

Yeah honestly I say bring all the smoke. The story lines I think are made too much of. Go out and just play and win whoever that is against. We already have the Gerry vs BH storyline so might as well just bring it all on lol

Refreshing and should give fans, boosters and admin confidence. At a large basketball school its a CEO role and need someone who can articulate like this.

The last thing we need is a lopsided loss to St. John's or UConn in MSG. Refrain from playing them until we have a roster that actually has a real chance to win against that level. We're not there yet.
these are great opportunities, and Gerry will rise to the occasion. Would love to play uconn or sju at msg. We won’t see many of the autry blowouts under gerry

Expected to see some of these comments. This program is headed no where, if we don't take the best opportunities we can get to compete. You want to be ready to win at primetime when you actually are ready to compete at primetime. You need as many measuring stick games as possible. Win win situations for Syracuse if you ask me. We should be grateful to play UConn or a St John's in MSG if that's one of the rumored games because it's actually them not us taking the bigger risk at this point. Sad we have gotten here, but that's what the deal is, accept it and relish the opportunity or take the harder road to getting back to playing in a building we should be playing in. We benefit from a win against them a lot more than they do at this point in time. We are hunters now, not being hunted. Hunters become hunted when they win these kinds of games, you can't become hunted if you aren't challenging yourself to play the best games possible.

Clearly, Gerry does not think this way. Whether the roster is ready to compete or not is a different debate. He WANTS to be tested.

STJ or UConn at MSG is a pretty deep test for any program.

You can pad a schedule and get a false sense of hope or you can go out and swim in the deep end. Last year showed the mentality of trying to steal a couple and feast on the bottom of D1 didn’t work out well. A lot of that was coaching and mentality.

Skepticism is is what it is but it’s not a crystal ball. 24 wins and 1 decent non conference game is no different than 17 wins with some actual challenges. Hiding in the dessert aisle isn’t going to do any favors this go around.

And yet last year this board was full of complaints about the difficulty of playing 4 ranked teams early.
