Gerry McNamara Interview with Jon Rothstein

God bless Red, but Gerry comes across as so much more polished. Thank god no more juicing station or level 5 foolishness. I think the kids will be motivated because they will be put in such a better position to win than the last few years.
Professionals was the word he used a lot.

And yet last year this board was full of complaints about the difficulty of playing 4 ranked teams early.
The back to back to back to back nature of those games was the trouble. You want them more spread out, with some easier games in between.

Interesting when he said he was hoping the 5 for 5 doesn’t pass .. then he followed it up later saying most teams “like us” have allocated most of their NIL already.

Seems to me we are done except maybe a fringe add. He’s worried if it passes, a lot of teams will add good, veteran players and we won’t be able to

I don’t know. I took that interview as saying we have to add a couple more pieces. 5 for 5 is not going to matter based on the latest intel. I think folks will take that NIL comment to mean whatever they assume it to mean based on their views of not seeing a bigger name commit so far.

He said our NIL was essentially used up .. I think that is relative to a big name piece more than it is about 2 depth pieces

I listened to it but can see it as much just gamesmanship as I can being honest. So I am in the camp of seeing what happens next. I can’t imagine somehow we had the money for Wilkins and Wilson(well technically Freeman at that moment to be completely accurate) and adding Wilson and Folefac dried up all that money that we nearly got Wilkins with.

opposites. some will, most wont be able too.

It could be interpreted a different way - it could mean that they have x 'allocated' to one position and y 'allocated' to another position that they are looking to fill, not that they have spent all their money.

Agreed. We certainly still have cash. I don’t think GMac would have used it all knowing this 5x5 was potentially out there. I’m sure we could make one more splash signing if we need to…and we probably do. I think his comments were more generalized to mean coaches collectively have already invested a lot of the available NIL expecting that the current seniors are done.

Rothstein nailed it by asking about the MSG game for this yr. Kind of wish he asked about Siby and how he’d impact the team this yr. But one of Rothstein’s better ones for sure
Siby isn't signed so McNamara couldn't talk about him regardless.

The last thing we need is a lopsided loss to St. John's or UConn in MSG. Refrain from playing them until we have a roster that actually has a real chance to win against that level. We're not there yet.
I would prefer not to play them and lose either. But I think our roster will be better built to compete because of defense.

For example, Seton Hall built a defensive roster (with almost no shooters). They lost to UConn and St. John’s by seven points or fewer in each of four games, holding them to 65, 69, 71 and 72 points. Seton Hall had a legitimate chance to win ALL those games, including leads with under a minute left. I think GMAC knows we need to play defense like that to legitimately compete. (and we should have more fire power than Seton Hall had). We appear to have a coach who values defense now and a team that buys into playing defense. Last years team appeared to lack both the ability and the desire to play defense at a high level for more than a few minutes at a time.

Conversely, we lost to 5 teams with losing records in the ACC that we led at halftime, and then completely collapsed defensively in the second half.

With the exceptions of Tennessee, Virginia and Clemson, all the good teams we played scored at will.

(If we just took care of business on defense against Hofstra and the sub 500 teams we had halftime leads against, we are a 21 and 11 team).
