Gerry McNamara needs to be the next coach

A lot of people are in Gerry's corner. Two big questions. 1) How many of them are letting their wallets do their talking?
2) Is the new administration allowing Adam Weitsman back into the fold? He's been busy posting old memories. Does that mean anything.

2a] Is weistman just piling on, captializing on an opportunity to stick it to the Lally's, who he's been fueding with for several years? Or is he actually going to donate some $$$ this time, instead of just talking about doing so?

This is the part I don’t get either. If you’re not getting a Pitino, or getting a Tony Bennett to come out of retirement, just about everyone is a crapshoot. A few years ago everybody wanted Oats. That was a pipe dream. Many did not understand the change in the basketball landscape due to NIL. There are maybe 10 coaches that I believe strongly could coach anywhere. Oats may or may not be one of them.

I say that because many of the guys thriving in the SEC have SEC money. How good would they be somewhere else? Hard to say because they don’t move by their own choice. Hard to poach them. Then if you get even a proven guy like Buzz Williams, you could see how he crashed and burned at Maryland without A&M resources.

Cooley was “proven” and was supposed to resurrect Georgetown, it was a slam dunk. Everyone said so. But that didn’t happen. Again, very few guys are slam dunk hires.

Seton Hall made a great hire with Shaheen Holloway. If that guy wasn’t a Seton hall alum, he would be in demand, and would be much easier to poach than he is. That’s the kind of guy I want coaching my team and representing my university.

Give me McNamara over Red, and give me Fran Brown over Dino. Give me guys with passion over guys who appeared to be “mailing it in”, who always seemed way too comfortable with losing. I think Gerry is a winner and I would rather take a chance on him then take a chance on anybody else that might be in the running for our head coach. Because whoever we hire, we’re taking a chance on.

If Gerry wasn’t connected to Syracuse, everybody watching that Duke game would say “that’s a guy we need to hire”. He took a four win team to a tournament team, (almost beating Duke as a 16 seed, playing only five players) in just two years.

It is nice to ginally see some sanity. In the NIL world Cuse is not a big boy. We should play to our strengths and about the only one left is the possibility of having a respected stable coach. Only G-Mac offers that possibility. For anyone else, we are a stepping stone. JB was paid below market and aside from basketball he was a pillar of the community. We need a competent coach who also bleeds orange.

In the ACC, as a snowbound school, we are at a recruiting disadvantage. No coach is going to sprinkle fairy dust and change that. Look at football: FB is the best we could get and we gave up 77 points to a team that did not even make the playoffs. Our expectations need to face reality.

For the past 5 years I have had little to no interest in March Madness.
My passion for the game had been waning until Thursday Afternoon.
Only BECAUSE it was GMac's team did I watch the game.
During the game, I realized I felt proud for GMac as he proved the naysayers wrong and that made me feel hopeful, excited and optimistic for the future of Syracuse Basketball.
I haven't posted in years, (I read the forum daily) but tonight as an alumnus of our beloved university I feel compelled to give my 2 cents.
GMac has shown why he should be our next Head Basketball Coach.
Amen brother, stick around, good times are a-coming!!

This is as far from true as it is possible to be. There is absolutely, positively no way we’d be clamoring for a guy who finished 3rd in his second year at a school in one of the worst conferences in basketball, then won the tournament and gave Duke a tough game in the NCAAs. None.

The only reason there’s so much interest is because he’s a “Syracuse guy”. A few people are willing to admit that - the vast majority are far more interested in gaslighting like you did here.

My feeling is if Gmac comes and kills it we will fill the dome and our average attendance would increase bye 7,000 or so at 15 home games and going low would be 30 dollar tickets could be a additional 3.1 mill per year more.

A spike of 7000 per game gets us back to 13-14 attendance - probably takes more than one good season (I’d guess about 3 with 2 possible) - but it’s possible. “Kills it” probably needs to be top ten seasons ideally with deep tourney runs to see that bump.
