NFL Has Started to View the Spread Offense as its Friend

NFL cares less about memorizing giant playbooks and giant arms and cares more about guys who can make quick decisions. this bills pats game sunday will make purist meatheads sick.

this is no criticism of marrone, i'm fine with his offense. more shotgun, more short passing to guys who are moving, more options is good. just saying that the benefits of being "pro-style" might go away as people (finally) come around to the spread

"Pro-style" simply refers to 3&5 drop step timing routes, like a bang 8.

When football analysts refer to 3&5 drop step timing routes as "pro-style passing," they are not suggesting that drop step timing routes are the only acceptable NFL offense. Instead, the "pro-style" label is simply a reference to the fact that the NFL uses 3&5 drop step timing routes WAY more than college. This was particularly true ~25 years ago when almost the entire NFL used an Air Coryell passing attack.

But even today, with an increased usage of shotgun, West Coast, and Ebhardt-Perkins, it is still true that NFL teams use drop step timing routes way more than college, high school, or any other football league: so it makes sense to refer to drop step timing routes as "pro style." Every NFL QB must learn "pro style" 3&5 drop step timing routes, but not every NFL QB has to know the spread option. Teaching a college QB "pro style" footwork is often the hardest part of breaking a college QB into the NFL.

Just because NFL teams are heavily using the shotgun and incorporating aspects of the spread offense, does not mean that the "benefits of using a pro style offense" have somehow disappeared.
