Nice person, but what have you seen out of him that is special?
-What was the expectation?
offensive line guru and disciplinarian who was behind that great Saints offense.

At SU.
The offensive lines are pretty bad.
There are discipline problems on and off the field on a steady basis.
The play calling is a dud most of the time (OCs fault or not)

Take away Drew Brees from HCDM and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

The roster is looking scary thin in experience and depth in some key spots. Is that not DM?

I know that oug offers more hope and or promise than the two prior coaches could muster Recruiting is better and its just a matter of time for that to produce quality like we want. consistency is an issue for damn sure but I'll take Marrone over Robinson or Pasqualoni and time. He has brought in good assistants in Shafer. I'm not thrilled with Hackett but that is probably more Marrone's fault . The offensive line is still wanting for dominance. Adkins may or may not be a good coach there but he is a good recruiting man and that is important. I'm thinking that we will recruit heavy for the O-line for 2013. Doug needs to get a tougher with the team to get the best out of them. Five effn losses in a row to end the season and lose a bowl isn't going to keep the head hunters away for long. I hear the grumbling already. Next year is going to be important for Doug here in Syracuse.couchburn

To me, the hope comes from the fact that you can look over our games and see where a handful of plays (whether on the player or the call itself) meant the difference between 5-7 hysteria vs. 7-5 and a bowl. This despite a lot of areas on the team where the need for improvement is obvious.

Strengths:
1). A love for the school and an appreciation of what it has to offer certain student-athletes combined with the understanding that "Syracuse is not for everyone."
2). Organization and discipline.
3). Willingness to work hard.
4). A commitment to a program which develops the "whole person."

Weaknesses:
1). Arrogance, primarily as evidenced on the offensive side of the football where he appears to have surrounded himself with little experience and good lieutenants who do more head nodding than contributing to the game plan. Regardless of hip-hop boy's title, this is Marrone's offense and he deserves to be held entirely responsible for that boring amalgam of nothingness that showed up week after week .
2). Apparently without a clue as to how to construct a functional staff. Two coaches for the D-line, two coaches for linebackers, no dedicated special teams coach, assigning QB's to a coach with no obvious qualifications to instruct the most important position on the field. Disaster. See 1.
3). Has not taken the opportunity to hire coaches with well established connections to important SU recruiting areas. See 1 and 2.
4). Is all talk when it comes to holding himself responsible for the product on the field. Taking responsibility in the midst of a five game losing streak is changing things up, trying new personnel combinations, attacking offenses and defenses in different ways, becoming less predictable...because you are holding up in the rear in possibly the worst BCS conference in the country and because you keep losing football games. See 1, 2 and 3.

I think you are right on some of these, but overall a bit harsh given the fact that you seem to be putting a lot of weight in assumptions.

What a complete waste of bandwidth! This board desperately needs an "ignore option".

I could be wrong on some of the theories- I actually hope I am wrong. Just my best attempt at making sense of what has occurred over the past 3 years.

Doug brings a great love, understanding, and passion of Syracuse. This is huge and is his biggest asset. He has great integrity and will never get this program in trouble. Again Huge! He works his arse off as do most coaches not named Steve S. He seems to be connecting with HS coaches in our prime recruiting areas. In short he is a very good head coach. My only issue with Doug is his inability to delegate and what i percieve as a bit of either being stubborn or possibly arrogance. NYC... If he were to hire a true OC and give him control and focus his efforts on the big picture i think we would be in much better shape. I was talking to a good friend who is very high up at UCLA and knows Doug and he said that if he were President of the United States he would be most like Carter in that he likes to micro manage everything. I really like this recruiting class especially now that we have recruited a true RB and feel as if he has a good chance at a solid 12 which should buy him another two to three years. In spite of my harping on him i supported him as a hire, feel he is a really good guy and want him to do well. Lets hope that 12 is his over the hump year.

I think there was pretty good substance to the OP actually. Seemed pretty straight forward. The expectation was that Doug was an o-line whiz, was going to bring an exciting DOME APPROPRIATE offense, and have a disciplined team. Well, the o-line is bad, the offense is unwatchable, and there have been some glaring discipline issues on and off the field.

Sure, the OP came off confrontational, but the substance makes sense.

Have to win at Minn and whoever the other OOC game is (USC, NWestern, _____)

The OL was so bad in 2011 that Tiller and Pugh both made 1st team All Big East.

A coach with potential to establish a successful program and not bolt for the door as soon bigger name schools start knocking.

A coach with the patience to wait on the school to upgrade facilities, not use it as an excuse like I do, and not get fed up and say " it" when that seems to be going in slow motion.

A coach that is willing to step down if/when he feels like he can't get it done.

Now that we are in the ACC, there are maybe a dozen jobs like that and those jobs do not open very often. Going forward, to not hire someone based on fear of them moving on is silly.

I prefer function over form and as a unit, they disappointed.

Other than the accolades above, you think the O line played well in 2011?

What looked like poor O-line play was often a case of WR's who could not separate and get open and RB's with poor vision.

You're right since, if Marrone doesn't work out, there aren't really any other coaching candidates that are former SU alums in a position to get the HC gig.

Options will be either a young up and coming guy, or an established older guy that fizzled out somewhere else. Given the choices I'd take the young guy, hope he's successful, and hope he decides he likes Syracuse and wants to stay.

A season always comes down to a few plays that go in either direction which result in a win or a loss. This year was no different. One consistent problem for many years has been the O-line. We begin consistency when that unit gives it to us again I say "again when quite honestly I can't remember "again" from when.!

It's been 10 years, I can't really remember that far back either.

the way the mature players (yes grob's seniors) responded to him while they were still here hopefully reflects well on his leadership ability. there have certainly been problems within the program from day 1 with the mass exodus and the innumerable off the field issues (mostly involving young players). i think the issues this year reflect more on a lack of strong senior leadership. any team is going to be dependent on those senior leaders buying into the head coach. i hope that marrone can turn it around but will need guys like derrell smith
