GMAC / Blackwell / AO to Siena

It also remains to be seen that he CAN'T motivate a group of NIL blah, blah, blah. So do you take a chance or not?
My point is that if it was not GMac, we would not consider him. The new coach for 2024-2025 for Youngstown State is Ethan Faulkner. They are 16-10. Does that coaching hire excite you? No? If they were a 6 win team last year (they were not actually), would that make it better? And I am not sure the Horizon is a worse conference than the MAAC.

As a Siena fan I would be satisfied. As a Syracuse fan, I was happy when Marrone went 4-8 after years of GERG, much less the bowl season the next year.

The bigger question is whether--if his name was something other than G-Mac--Syracuse fans would see him as an upgrade. We are not surprised that his team is playing hard. But it remains to be seen whether GMac can motivate a group of NIL-focused players to play hard at this level.
Well lets see where he and his program (and ours) are after next year.

Oof tough loss for the saints... Killed themselves at the foul line (we know that deal) but otherwise competitive. That Doty is a heck of a mid-major player... He could make the jump up to the next level if he keeps growing and gets bigger

Tough loss for GMac’s team. They were leading the whole game just to cough it up right at the end. I do love the way his team plays and GMac brings so much passion/intensity and never stops coaching. His team certainly follows his lead.

Last night's game was a tough loss. Thirteen missed FT's had a direct impact on the loss but even more important was how the first two minutes of the second half unfolded. Marist came out and cut right into Siena's lead and that really jump started the Marist defense and offense. The things that worked for Siena in the 1st half, didn't work in the 2nd. Chalk it up to being a new coach for GMAC. Marist totally outplayed Siena and guys couldn't get to the hoop or have good looks at 3's.

That said, Siena is like a MASH unit. In addition to Jackson and Carey missing big chunks of time, Reid Ducharme missed last night's game due to an injury and both Brendan Coyle and Myles Wilmoth got injured during the game which caused them to be substituted for and missed valuable minutes before returning.

Not good when you are only playing seven guys and without Ducharme, your three guards are playing 40 minutes each. I dont care how conditioned your guys are, 40 minutes is still a lot which might have played into the other factors of the loss.

Red would be getting killed if he lost a 13 point half time lead. It’s just a tough loss for GMAC.
I mean... context is important here. GMac went in and is basically building something from literally nothing. I think everyone expects growing pains from a first-time HC, whether it's him or Red. cliftonparksufan did a good job covering what happened in this game. I think what Gerry has going on at Siena is pretty impressive overall; time will tell if the program continues to rise, but it looks promising at this point.

I hope GMAC kills it at Siena, but I hear excuses about injuries and guys having to play too many minutes etc. SU has had their fair share on injuries to major players too. He’s also not playing ACC teams. GMAC is going to be fine. I’m anxious to see how he recruits and if he gets better players and will he be able to keep them. That’s going to be GMAC’s toughest part of the job.

I think the biggest difference between Siena and SU is effort and frankly how close the games are. They just lost to the second place team by a point.
Before that, they lost on a buzzer beater.
Whereas we normally lose by double digits.
Siena is starting from ground zero, 4 wins last year. trending up.
SU had 20 wins last year, trending down.

They are just more organized and frankly look like they practice. I thought Red deserved the opportunity and don't want to hire Gerry, but if I'm betting who is running their own program in five years ...it ain't Red.
