GMAC / Blackwell / AO to Siena

Definitely their worst game of the season.
Hopefully this will be a teaching moment for Gerry.
I dont think I have ever seen so many consecutive turnovers in the first half.
So often teams come out from a blow out win and play sloppy and lackadasical.
That was the case here.
And that technical in the second half when the freshman lost his composure and shoved a Canisius player.
The camera showed Gerry screaming at him in the huddle. I don't think I ever have seen him so upset.
They lost 6 points on that possession.

Still with 4 minutes to go they were down 16 and ended up only losing by 5.
So, the fight was there.

Fulton’s Gavin Doty and his sensational rookie season at Siena: ‘What he does is not normal’

Big article on Syracuse.com this morning on Siena's Gavin Doty. As has been said in this thread Gerry had his eye on him for awhile. Interesting that Syracuse.com would have basketball reporter Donna Ditota write another long piece on the Siena basketball program. This is an excellent article for anyone who has access to it. It ends with this paragraph:

“He’s going to have opportunities, but he knows he has a great opportunity here with people who love him,” McNamara said. “He’s obviously going to have a lot of people who are going to try to get to him and he’s going to have decisions to make. Those are decisions, when the time comes, we’ll sit down and talk about. But I know he’s happy here and we love having him here.”

Hard to believe with the crap team SU has that we didn't even give this kid a sniff.
Will probably win MAAC rookie of the year - leads the league with 4 MAAC rookie of the week awards.
It isn't like SU was unaware of him - GMAC had been tracking him for years.
And I believe we had an extra scholarship available.

One more reason why I have no faith in Red.
Guy cant coach and guy cant evaluate talent.

At this point you're making up reasons to disparage Red. It's weird.

I defer to you as I haven't watched as much Siena as you have. Is he really a Power 4 level player or are we looking at someone like Jyare or Carlos when they move up to this level?

BTW, Syr MLAX fans: the article says he plays every possession to win that possession. And he played lacrosse in high school. We could use some of that determination on our MLAX team.

it's to be determined. Anyone who tells you that he would be as impacful as he has been, is blowing smoke. Just look at the schools that offered him. He was on nobody's radar. But he's worked hard and now is a much better player.

If he develops into a P4/P5 player, he'll get looks.

The standard has been MAAC level guys need to be like POY level players. Not to say he can’t get there but the MAAC rookie of the week ain’t it

I agree with that thinking and that's where my question was kind of leading towards :)

What am I making up?
GMAC was tracking him for years per his interviews.
Doty has won 4 MAAC rookie of the week awards and will probably win MAAC rookie of the year, at least per the media.
And I believe there was an extra scholarship available last year that went unused - unless it went to a walk on?

I am not a fan of Red as a coach, loved him as a player. I didn't think he had the chops to take over the head coaching role. He has shown nothing to prove that I was wrong.

I would have preferred GMAC over him. His results at Siena show initially that I may have been right that he was better prepared than Red to step us to being a head coach. If nothing else, he has introduced a culture that the SU team sorely lacks.

I would have preferred an experienced head coach over Red and GMAC who could hit the ground running

I would place him above Jyare and Carlos.
Is he right now a Power 4 starter? No.
He would be playing significant minutes. Would at the very least be our sixth man.
But that is more an indictment of how badly our kids play.
He is a better defender than anyone on our team and I dare say a better rebounder than any of our guards.

I know the fear is a Power 4 school is going to poach him unless Siena can come up with NIL.

He's played more defense in 1 game than we have all season. I'd take him for that alone.

Well, again, you're giving GMAC credit for things that haven't happened yet by saying Doty will win MAAC rookie of the year, without there being any sense of what winning that award actually means, yet using that as evidence of Red's inability to identify talent. You also said that Doty would play significant minutes for us and "at least" be our 6th man. Which, maybe, but that's unknowable, and is something you're giving credit to GMAC for at Red's expense.

And this is why I don't find what you're posting to be credible. Your bias to GMAC is so extensive that you're nowhere close to objectivity. You give GMAC credit for hypothetical achievements, but you don't stop there - you then subjectively stack up these points in favor of GMAC against Red. And you're not conscious of it. You've asked me several times now for me to show you where you're doing what I've described, and I quote it directly in your posts.

Like if you're just a die hard GMAC fan that's fine, but it's weird on SYRACUSEfan.com to take frequent opportunities to shine a spotlight on Siena basketball as an excuse to dump on Red using made up assertions.

Siena is a program with a losing record that's a better record than they had last year. That's the objective statement. If you want to sing their praises for it, fine. If you want to praise GMAC for it as a former Orange, fine.

But if you are going to talk negatively about the program and our actual head coach using made up stuff, I'm going to call it out. There are plenty of valid criticisms right now without spinning into the world of fiction as you do.

Jyare was 2nd team ALL CAA.

You are lacking the content of the league he’s playing in
How many years left does Doty have? How about Carlos? One is at the beginning of a career, one at the end. When you have a roster spot also, there is a "both" potential.

Was Andy Rautins special in Year 1? Played in 20 games, averaging 3 PPG. A lot of other Syracuse
players were fairly rough when they got here in year 1.

But getting a local kid and getting meaningful contributions... but not so much as to get poached away... seems like a good idea to me.

This becomes the issue with a coach coaching for his job too. Should he try to get some young talent next year or go "all in" to try to save his job. If/when he fails, we end up with not much on the roster for 2026-2027.

Can you point to a player in the ACC who played on a losing MAAC level team that wasnt an All league level player that has contributed to their team?

The idea he’d be our sixth man this year is preposterous. Look at what Taylor is doing at James Madison

No. But if he had just started here, who would know? You need a few projects on your team, especially with 15-man rosters.

Great. That wasn’t the suggestion in the post I was responding to. it was said he was better than Jyare and Carlos now.

Turn on and watch a Siena game .. I have .. I objectively see a coach more dialed in and has his a culture set at even in a bad loss .. No quit, fighting all the way!… I objectively see a coach whose team plays more like a traditional Cuse team than the team we put out and I objectively see a coach that improved a 4 win team to 13 wins.. And I wish I could post the video form there last game when he got into a player about his tech… best I could was a pic, but I have never seen Red challenge a player like that and more than that have the team respond down 17 late to get cut too 5 …I objectively wee a coach whose is much better and should have been our coach at Cuse!

GMac is better than Red. Great.

Neither are qualified to be the Syracuse head coach right now.

I said he will probably win MAAC rookie of the year. The media is saying that as well.

Listen we can go around and around about this.
I have no faith anymore in Red.
If you have, God bless you and I hope he proves you right.

But he needs to bring an offensive/defensive identity to his team
He needs to instill some kind of positive culture.
He needs to take whatever talent level his players have and construct a game plan that emphasizes their strengths.

And yes, he can take a page from GMAC's book.
GMAC instilled a culture that reflects who he is - never give up, work your ass off and make every possession count. It doesn't work every game (Canisius!) but it stops giving up and allowing blowouts.

I for one am sick of blowouts and sick of feeling that most games are lost by half time.

Who exactly is Red and what does he want his team to stand for?
I think that is a valid question.
