A lot of fans here appear to want to double down on poor shooting on the perimeter as long as the athleticism is ok to good. We need to stop with it. JJ really hampered our offense the past 3 years. We aren’t going anywhere if we can’t shoot. Gmac needs to find shooting on the wings and at point guard. It’s the only way we will be successful in 2026.

No doubt.

If we are going to continue to set a high screen for a ball handler on 90% of possessions, we must have a primary ball handler who can make a 3 pointer off the dribble. We have not had one since Joe G.

(And here’s an even crazier idea. Occasionally, set a high screen using a screener who is able to pop out and make a 3.)

I would love to know how many high screens SU set over the last 3 years for guards who were incapable of making a 3 off the dribble.

There's a Mendoza line kinda thing here where I think everyone has to have a minimum shooting ability for the offense to be functional. If it's another offensive system with a lot of high ball screens for the same lead guard and everyone else mostly plays off of him, I'd be willing to sacrifice the shooting to an extent specifically from the lead guard if it means he's able to get downhill more effectively and kick out to our better shooters.

There's also some trade off between how good a shooter someone is and how quickly they can get the shot off. JJ could at least get his shot off quickly but he was unfortunately too poor a shooter for it to really matter, whereas someone like Betsey for example needed a bit more space to get his shot off but was a fine shooter.

Have to. It spaces the floor and changes the square footage the defense has to cover and opens up the options once the action is initiated in high pick and roll. Need a lead guard who can exploit and find those options too. Immediately apply pressure to a defense.

We can run a ton of different looks if we can effectively initiate it well.

Would also be nice if we got guys that could set screens well too. Got the feeling that GMac won’t tolerate the nonsense of half-hearted screens.

The Office Thank You GIF

This is exactly why I also want to see bigs targeted who can shoot if they do other things well. Possible options like Veesar at UNC for the 5 or Folguerias at Iowa as an all around 4 if Donnie leaves etc. Then of course a PG that is a bigtime shooter as noted.

“If we are going to continue to set a high screen for a ball handler on 90% of possessions….”
I will lose my mind if the offense is a continuation of the stale, one-dimensional JB system.

Does he know how to create good shots?

I'm fine with giving him a shot but id be lying if I were confident that I will like this offense.

I'm expecting a lot of bad I-got-this ball

I think he’ll be fine. They were severely short handed.

You need talent. Period. IF Freeman stays he should be your 4-5th best player. And you need 3-4 bench players that play.

Gmac played all 5 Siena starters 40 minutes in the tourney. Even Boeheim never went that far.
