I am an LSU fan who grew up in Canandaigua, New York, and was high school teammates (I was on the freshman team when he was a senior) of Bill Scharr (okay, I'm ducking now). A friend who was in my wedding is on the LSU coaching staff so I follow the Tigers extremely closely.

First, I love the Carrier Dome experience. I was at the WVU game in 1987 with my Canandaigua teammates and I think the first time I ever heard rap was prior to a SU basketball game in the early-to-mid 1980s. Upstate New York is a better place to be when Syracuse is successful. It looks like the Orange are heading in that direction.

I think one thing that goes a bit unnoticed about Syracuse's team last year is that it kept quite a few games tight, at least until the 4th quarter. There's no question that SU will enter Saturday's game extremely motivated and energized, and LSU could be a bit flat after being told how good they are all week long after the impressive win vs. Auburn, who looks to be a shell of what everyone thought they'd be.

As for LSU, they are a tough, physical matchup for anyone in the country. They are deep, big, and very physical. I heard a national radio show host just two weeks ago mention how he had been on a number of campuses this summer and LSU was the most physically impressive group he saw, mentioning that it wasn't even close between LSU and some major programs.

If LSU has any weaknesses, its defensive line depth, although it's showing signs of improvement, as well as linebacker depth. LSU's secondary group is regarded as one of the very best in the nation. They look a little vulnerable to the dink-and-dunk, although that was against a Heisman Trophy caliber quarterback in Dak Prescott.

The passing game can certainly be seen as a weakness but Brandon Harris is very talented. Huge arm and athletic. The wide receiver group is deep and very talented. I'd bet that they have 4-5 receivers on their roster right now that will ultimately make NFL rosters.

The offensive line is physical and plays with a mean streak. Although Syracuse has struggled in defense against the pass, LSU is going to do what it always tries to do, which is to impose its will in the run game. I do think they'll be a little bit more liberal in throwing the football on Saturday if they can secure an early lead.

It will be a fun contest on Saturday. I think one thing that will jump out at you even in warmups is the size of this LSU group. Regardless how the game develops, it's quite a sight.

Defensively our biggest concern coming into the season was a lack of depth up front. We lost a couple of D-linemen due to discipline and academic issues that were likely being counted on to be part of the rotation. To this point, the guys we are rotating are holding up well, but it may prove to be a factor as the season lengthens. We have shown a susceptibility to quick release passing games. Dak Prescott and his big wideout DeRunya Wilson gave us fits down the stretch at Mississippi State. Some of that was due to the tempo of State coupled with first game fatigue issues limiting our pass rush late in the game. I feel like our run defense is much improved between the tackles so far this season, and it had to be. It was a huge problem at times last year. We are quick to the edge defensively. Seldom have teams had success going east and west against us. So, if I were looking to run successfully against us, I'd look to pound the interior and make those tackles hold up for the long term.
Offensively, it's hard to talk a lot about us without mentioning Fournette, because obviously he is the man for us. However, I think you will be impressed with our depth at the tailback spot. Our OL has been good so far. They are big and physical and really live to run block. I am hopeful that we will begin to use a little play action in early downs in the next few weeks just so we can maybe back some folks out of the box. Seeing 8 or 9 in the box was all too commonplace last year. I really don't have a feel for how we would/will handle an aggressive blitzing pass defense...mainly because we haven't thrown it very much.
I expect LSU to overcome a lot of early emotion and fire from The Orange and slowly impose our will offensively. We will continue to mash on you in the run game, even if it doesn't appear to be yielding early success, (see our Ole Miss game from last year). I think eventually our depth at the TB spot coupled with the physical play of our OL will allow us to pull away. (Biased? Highly likely!!)

I don't read that as biased at all. No shame in elaborating on what you do well. I always expect LSU to have maulers up front, stud RB's behind them, fast WR's and LB's that can cover ground east-west and seems this year is no exception.

Thanks for allowing me to join your board. I have been lurking your board for several months now and have followed the build up to the Tigers' trip to The Carrier Dome this weekend. When the game was announced, I had high hopes of being there, but as luck would have it, we won't be able to make the trip. If any of you would like to know anything about the team that LSU is bringing up there this weekend I will be glad to offer you my less than expert and decidedly biased opinion. In the meantime, I will keep reading whatever I can on here in order to learn what I can about The Orange before kickoff Saturday morning. I'm curious to see how Dungey's situation ends up. That was a BS hit. Hopefully he's able to bounce back and be ready to roll soon.

I have 3 questions:

1- why does Tulane hate you so much?
2- why is Pat Dye such a ?
3- what do you make of this?

what's funny is that if you ask other SEC fan bases their opinions on LSU fans, they will have stories to tell painting us as the most ruthless bunch of fans they have ever met. They tell stories of old ladies being tipped over in port-o-potties, of balloons filled with urine coming down on them from the upper decks, etc..

Then if you ask the fan bases of Washington, Va Tech, Arizona, Arizona St, or basically any other non conference foe, you will hear stories of our extremely welcoming Cajun hospitality, and how we will feed you and get you drunk like no other.

My boss went to Ole Miss and he raves about LSU fans and their hospitality.
