Yes, the loss stinks. A win would be marquis material. Let's see what we can take away from this loss.:

1) HCSS & Co. can coach! They can prepare well, plan well and can make adjustments as necessary. Some of us saw this earlier in the season, some were skeptical about the ability to adjust. LSU would have racked up 50+ points if the coaches had not made adjustments during the game as well as at the half. We have a good coaching staff and they know they work well together.

2) The coaches have the confidence of the kids. The kids believe in the system and the coaches and play hard. We cannot ask for more. Fournette is the real deal and LSU's O-Line is as real as they get, we will not face another O-Line that good all season. They stuck with Maloney and built his confidence. Had Maloney had his confidence early, who know, an upset could have occurred (or had Dungey been available).

3) The Defense is not a serious problem, time and experience will improve it. Defense is easier to learn than Offense and the kids did well in spite of being over matched. Each week we see improvement. None of us expected the DBs to be our strongest unit but they did well. Yes, they will have problems with FSU and Clemson speed. Considering losses to graduation, we are in good shape. Let us not forget that LSU is #8 for good reason and this defense, though allowing points, was over matched in size and speed. Also, see #6.

4) Though most of us are comfortable with Dungey, it is refreshing to know that we have a QB that can come in an play. I hope Long progresses well enough to make that number 2 backups. We hope we don't need them, but as last season taught us, you can never have to many (fill in any position).

5) The kids never gave up! Syracuse started a 5th string walk-on against the #8 team in the country, a very aggressive LSU team. Over matched in size and speed, our Orange never gave in. That plays well with future growth of these individuals and the team. Never did the RBs stop pounding, the receivers run decent routes, the O-Line give way to LSU's D. Never did the D make it easy (Please, don't take anything away from LSU's O-Line, the deserve a lot of credit for LSU's win).

6) Recruiting just became that much easier. Coaches can walk into recruits homes and say, "we play the best but we need a few more key players to get us over the top. You can start as soon as you earn the spot." Playing time goes to those that earn it. This staff shows they want to win and that inspires kids. This staff is loyal to the kids giving them every opportunity to shine. Kids that will not be starting for a top 25 program may want playing time elsewhere and visibility, Come on down!

I don't think our D was over matched by their OL. Fournette makes their OL look really good. We stood toe-to-toe with them better than Auburn did, and as well as Mississippi State. I really don't think there's any team out there, with the possible exception of Alabama, that can handle Fournette.

This is so true. LSU's OL is so good, but when Fournette was out SU was bottling up the back up. It's not like he was getting five yards without being touched. That happens with Fournette because he is super human, not because their offensive line is pushing DL's five yards off the line.

I think it is hard to take a lot away from the LSU game, just like it was hard to take much from the Rhode Island game. The biggest takeaway is that we can be competitive vs a good team. That wasn't the case in Shafer's first 18 games (before the injuries hit). I don't think we can really evaluate the O or D because of the talent gap with LSU. The Wake game was a better indicator. The CMu game on the D side only as well. There are a lot of reasons to be optimistic but we really don't know what we have yet. I think 8-4 is very realistic but I also wouldn't be surprised if we end up 4-8. We will know a lot more after USF.

shocking to me that if LSU does not have #7 in the game the only way they could move the ball was throwing deep.. huge drop off running when he was out. if they were down to the #5 qb i dont think they beat us.

Fournette is a great back but their OL was opening up big holes. If he didn't play yesterday I still think LSU has similar success. Their OL was impressive.

You may be right. I give the LSU O-Line credit because there were several times when Fournette was not touched by our D-Line which allowed Fournette to get up steam and face smaller players. He was fun to watch though it was against my Orange. As a CFB fan, I can now watch him the rest of the season for fun.

Our guys played a great game, but I don't think this is true. They really only needed their QB on that one drive where he made two nice passes, one for the TD. If they don't line up illegally on that 87 yd TD run, they don't need that TD. They also sat Fournette for a couple series which they probably don't do if their QB is down for the count.

I tuned in to Georgia games just last year just to see Todd Gurley play. Dude was an animal. Fournette is better. I'm adopting LSU as my secondary team for the rest of the year.

The only place we were over-matched was on paper, never on the field.

Now the kids know and have proven to themselves that they can play with and beat anybody, they just got in the ring with a true heavyweight. Can't wait for USF.

14 rushes for 24 yards by runners not named fournette. I'd say they more than held their own as well.

Could not disagree more. I think there is tons to take from it:

1. Our DL played really well vs one of the best OL. When Fournette was out or on pass plays we "won" over 50% of those plays.

2. If you had questions about Lester and chalked up he success to Dungey 100%, you learned a lot about how well he can game plan and prepare a QB. He called a very nice game. Dungey can execute the offense and make something from nothing - but Lester + Dungey is very promising (also, ERV).

3. Ishmeal and Estime looked like SEC level players.

4. Our young D is going to be very good by the end of the year.

Agree with this. Fournette is just a force of nature. No one is going to look particularly good against him this year. The DL more than held its own in almost every situation that didn't involve him.

Another good takeaway; #77, Ethan Pocic, had to resort to using Judo to handle Steven =D As evidence, I direct your attention to the 5:16 mark of the 2nd quarter.
No need to direct, I watched him from the first call. That was Pocic's only hope. Steven played an exceptional game against what could be the best center prospect this season. Thank you, Steven.

Exactly.

And yet another thing =D

Anyone notice that our OL was doing a great job in keeping LSU's defensive line in check?
Our O-Line is really good. Mahoney had much more time than most O-lines would provide against LSU's D-Line. If only Mahoney knew in the first half that most guys catch with their hand, not their feet, Mahoney could have had a stellar day.

The talent level of a player is a fair point. The others IMO are hard to judge. How much of the O credit goes to Lester vs the way LSU played? It is definitely not 100% Lester nor 100% LSU. I hope that it is more Lester than LSU but it is hard to judge. Same for the run D. How much of it was their OL? How much is it Fournette? And how much was it our D? I want to believe that the 244 yards and 9.6 yards per carry were 100% LSU but that isn't the case. Just like 4 total yards rushing at 0.2 per carry vs Rhode Island wasn't 100% us. IMO the Wake and CMU games are better indicators of our run D. Against Wake we looked great, RBs had 68 yards at 3.0 per carry . However against CMU the run D wasn't great as their RBs had 134 yards at 4.0 per carry. USF will tell us whether our run D is good or just decent.

I'm not sure I'm ready to go with "really good" yet but they're vastly improved. What a difference it makes to have Trudo back on the line, particularly now that they've shifted him to RG. Nothing against Shanley, I'm sure he's a terrific kid...but the talent upgrade is ridiculous.

Moving Trudo over to RG is going to be huge for us. I was happy for Shanley and his story. Just watching him get blown up early this game, I figured we where in for a long game. Great in game adjustment by the staff.

They didn't really disrupt our run game in the backfield. Not sure if that was by design. My vague IPA-besotted recollection is that we caught Fournette in the backfield more times than they snagged us.
