Got a complaint from a friend about losing out on top NYS players

The key to this program will always be early scouting of lesser known prospects. We'll need to grab some higher rated guys here and there to let us contend with the factories from time to time, but our foundation has and will always be the underrated guys that come here and develop.

Sort of the key to the program is to win recruiting battles versus our peer programs and develop kids. On those years when we have good seniors and a good QB we should be able to compete with the better programs. That is my outlook

I agree with that. I think that goes along with good early scouting. I suppose I need to define "lesser known". To me it's not necessarily just the 2 star and below, but includes 3 stars too. I think we need to keep in mind our foundation has never been built on an abundance of the elite level recruits. It was built on solid kids that developed over time with a few elite talents mixed in. Beating out peer schools for a number of those recruits is definitely part of the equation.

That's the starting point.

I know it's knit picking...but Defarrel Davis is from Melvindale, Michigan not New York State.

Just because he attended Nassau CC doesn't make him home grown. Some here made a similar case during the recruitment of Mavety who is from Sparta, NJ.

He also was never committed here. Don't believe he had an offer.

Tyler Rouse got some carries as a freshmen at BC.

Should probably mention Gus Edwards, too, and what he did this year down at Miami. That one stings, especially with Rome leaving.

Jarron Jones was second team behind NG Louis Nix.

He started for ND late in the season when Nix hurt his knee.

Jones is the likely starter at nose tackle next season for the Irish.

our 1st bowl game in a while was when this years incoming class was freshmen in HS.

we didnt do squat their soph year.

got back to the same bowl their JR year.

and basically recruiting was done by the bowl of their SR year.

as we keep making bowls and playing late in the december, the age of kids who have witnessed this run from the start, get younger.

a good thing.

Syracuse is not the big state school or its little brother, that everyone wants to go to. we will get the talent as the wins keep coming.

and once we get to 11 or 12 wins for 5 years in a row or so, we will get the cnyers to show up in the Dome.

but the point is, recruiting will get easier.

The problem with NY kids is they seem to be very hit and miss because the competition is week, and the development is as well. There are other productive NY kids that SU missed or passed on.

Latavious Murray had a nice career at UCF. Pitt started that Murphy kid at DE and Hendricks is a really good safety. Both are actually from NY. Rutgers did well a few years ago with NY kids like Rice, Leonard and the McCourtys (NY boys who went to school in Jersey). Urschel at PSU had a nice career. Gaines was a starting linebacker at Miami. Buffalo has even had success with some kids, Roosevelt and Starks being the most prolific.

Id like to see SU get the best players it can. It's nice when they add "locals" though. Gives NYers another excuse to follow the team.

It read:

Wow...this needs to change

Holley, 6-foot-4, 299 pounds, is among the recent top New York prospects to
bypass Syracuse. Included in that list are defensive end Ebenezer Ogundeko
(Clemson), quarterback Chad Kelly (Clemson), defensive tackle Jarron Jones
(Notre Dame), linebacker Ishaq Williams (Notre Dame) and defensive tackle
Dominique Easley (Florida).

My response

Still waiting for any of them to do one significant thing in college besides Easley.

Take a kid like Jason Bromley who no one gave an offer to until 3 months before his freshman season.

The kid is blowing it up at the East-West Shrine practices 81 inch wing span, explosive first step and power bull rush is gaining the attention of pro scouts.

Jason was a 0 star

The other players you mentioned were 4 & 5 stars

Chad Kelly (I won't put here what I wrote but we are best off without him)

How about Shamarko Thomas (Virginia) very lightly regarded coming out of high school he graded out right at the top at the combine and the Steeler's including Troy Polamalu are gushing about his future

Justin Pugh (PA) nobody big went after him, he is going to make all rookie 1st team, started every game for the New York Giants in what should have been his senior year in college.

Getting back to New York State

Chandler and Arthur Jones were both lightly regarded coming out of high school

Chandler is a 2nd year starter for New England and could end up in the Super Bowl one year after his brother got a ring playing a key role on the Ravens defensive line.

How about Steve Gregory a starter with San Diego for years and now possibly headed to the Super Bowl with his New England teammate Jones.

Mackey Mac Pherson is the best center Syracuse has had in many years. The kid came in and was assaulted by many so called SU fans as being a wasted scholly only getting it because of his grandpa's pull. I wish the kid could play four more years. His passion for the program was unparalleled and his leadership was something to behold not to mention his work ethic.

My friend I would not trade any of those non or low ranked kids for any of the ones mentioned in your note.
That complaint sounds a lot like something I read on Syracuse.com this morning. Ugh.

Only if we score 40 points per game, throw lots of bombs, go for it on every 4th and goal, and NEVER punt! None of that boring, defense and running game ugly win crap!!!

Kind of apples and oranges and not a fair comparison. Many of our guys if they had gone to a Stanford, ND, PedSt, Clemson, Florida wouldn't have seen the field either.

I know that was in jest, but... it's true.
