Syracuse gets a B+

"Syracuse — Dino Babers

This is about as well as Syracuse could have done. The Baylor offensive system, which Babers learned as an assistant from 2008-2011 under Art Briles, is starting to put up big numbers in lots of places and conferences and now comes to the ACC after an 18-9 run at Bowling Green over the last two seasons.

Babers, 54, waited a long time to get his shot as a head coach in 2012 at Eastern Illinois. It has been a quick rise since then to a Power 5-level job, but this feels like a very good move for a football program that really lacked an identity. It has one now."

Actually pretty good. Only a few rated ahead of us and we are ahead of UCF, MD and RU.

Why do so many of these types of articles have to give these begrudging compliments-it's like they can't just give credit for a good hire.

Nah. Everything I've seen has credited SU with making a good to great hire. And, most talk about finally having an identity on O. Like it or not, SU has earned the "this is about as well as Syracuse could have done" stuff. It's all good, and if Dino's history of success and prolific production continues at a bottom of the barrel P5 program, there will be an avalanche of national attention.

Amazing how many dominoes fell our way for us to get Babers. Crazy he wasn't on more school's radars. I'd like to think he was our number one guy all along but if Frost was then it was a blessing in disguise losing him.

And the biggest domino that I haven't seen mentioned was Houston. Houston should be on that list for retaining Herman. Amazing an AAC school kept South Carolina, Georgia and Missouri away. He was one of the hottest coaching names out there and if he left would have Houston out bid us for Babers?

Herman has a good gig going. He knows the talent he has there, they just built a brand new stadium and are investing more money into the facilities, he's looking at a top 35+ recruiting class, they just gave him a boatload of money, and he can wait for one of the big Texas jobs to open up, or until Houston gets invited to a seat at the big-boys table which they are strongly pushing for.

HE gets a $5 million bonus if they get into the Big 12. He also gets a penalty payment if they don't complete a IPF in the next 18 months!

I agree its a good gig and glad he's there for our sake but South Carolina pulls in top 20 classes on the norm and is in the best league in CFB. The only thing I can think of is UT telling him to wait one more year.

Those top 20 classes are relative to the talent in their conference. they've been recruiting talent that ranks in the bottom half of the SEC for the past 5+years. Houston is an easier place for Herman or any coach to win big while waiting for a dream job. Plus they pay him like a P5 coach. It's a win-win for him.

We'll look back on this and say he broke the curve.

I think three things played in our favor:

1. Age and race. Mizzou would have been a really hard job before you even get to football for an African American coach. I think some schools passed due to age.

2. When you hire Babers, you're going all in on that very specific offensive system. Not an easy pill to swallow for meathead boosters, former players, and AD's.

3. We play in a controlled environment in the easiest path to a playoff birth in the P5. (Big 12 is close too - but I don't think he's wanting to go against Briles. They are too close).

Based on his words, I definitely think the Carrier Dome was an underrated attraction for Babers to come to SU.

No doubt. Another reason why he was the perfect fit / best candidate for this job.

I think #2 is it ... not many folks would commit to a radical change of system like we have. Honestly, for once our recent history of frustration may have played in our favor. Yes, a new athletic director was a huge factor but even his hire was partly the result of a frustration with the old regime. We were at a point whe everyone felt radical change was acceptable.

Same with Temple.

The American Conference got some notice this fall - its football reputation has been enhanced.

That wouldn't surprise me in the least. Both Strong and Sumlin are on thin ice right now and it wouldn't take much for either school to look for a new coach. Our board guru who's well-connected to UT says that UNC's Larry Fedora is also in the mix.

Bleacher report gave us the 3rd best coaching hire grade out of all 26 new hires this year, even ahead of mark richt.
Just my two cents: Mark Richt is a decent coach who had a gold mine for recruiting. He has stepped into a platinum mine at Miami, but a true test of a great coach is what he can do with average players. Richt has had top shelf players and always fell short in the biggest of games, similar to former tOSU HC John Cooper. He will have no less than equal talent at Miami, probably better, and we will see what he can do. He will likely win 10 games annually, but I don't see any ACC championships until he proves he can coach on game day.

I would expect somewhat lesser results for Richt at Miami. Just a feeling that he is a bit overrated.

It will be very interesting to see what direction the school's administrators allow Richt to take. I think the fans who want to see a return of the Jimmy Johnson days will be sorely disappointed because Shalala shut that down, possibly forever. It wouldn't surprise me at all if whenever Richt's time is over they average only 1 and a fraction wins more per year than the time that Golden was there because the Da U was not allowed to return and the University of Miami was on the field in its place.

It depends upon who Eric Taylor is?
