As I have been scanning KenPom rankings this year I have noticed Grand Canyon a few times in the top 100 (Currently #88, 19-2 record in the WAC ). I had never heard of them before this year

Did a little research today:
- This is only the second year the school is in Division 1, so to be where they are at is quite impressive. Rutgers would dream to be a top 100 school.

- This is the only for profit school in the NCAA which apparently is quite controversial. I guess the Pac 12 took a run to get them out a few years ago.

- They seem to put quite a bit of money into athletics. Which for a school that is publicly traded makes some sense.

They are currently 19-2 and are the best team in the WAC. But as they are new to D1 they are ineligible for the NCAA tournamnet. I always thought it was a silly rule to allow teams into your league but make them ineligible, but it rarely mattered.

Anyway, thought it was interesting to see a new team have so much success in D1, and at the same time have a different and controversial model. Do people think this for profit model will allow them to build into a high level basketball school over the next 5-10 years?

Government-funded/privately funded. Really, what's the difference? Millions upon millions going one way or the other. As long as they're not paying the players, it shouldn't be a big deal.

I think the whole "for-profit" college model is a huge deal. You're going to see many of those schools (Not necessarily Grand Canyon) shut down over the next few years, either through criminal or civil actions.

very interesting. Anything that needles the NCAA is not only ok with me, but I will promote. I may have to keep an eye on their stock performance, looking for a nice entry point. And to answer your question, if they are dedicated to pay a coach a high salary, provide the facilities, and start to build a winning tradition, I think the sky's the limit.

OK but that has nothing to do with Grand Canyon at this point. And even if they get shut down, so what.

Sounds like a good model for getting rid of nutty professors and worthless classes. Would be revolutionary if they quit the ncaa and pay their players. If a few other schools joined in, a new league would be formed that would have all the best players.

Why?
At least they are honest about seeking profit. The big schools sit on billions in "endowments." That's essentially the same as profits, but untaxed, so it hurts everyone.

The current University model will implode when student aid dollars dwindle due to necessary government deficit reduction. The aid-sucking self-perpetuation mechanisms won't contract at the same level as the loss. After all, we're going to have to pay for Social Security with something.
All hail for profit Universities. Incidentally, schools that refuse aid are often cheaper not out of necessity but because they don't need the personnel to handle the mass of government regulations.

That's just the opposite of the medical insurance model, where the single-payer system is much less expensive than the one with private insurance companies, whose bureaucracy and red tape are the equal of any institution on earth.

Monopoly is better than competition. Makes sense to me...

Grand Canyon University has been a powerhouse in D-2 and NAIA for a long time. I don't know much about the academics of the school but I know they have a bunch of national championships. Back when the only preseason basketball info came from Street and Smith's, I adopted GCU and Bayard Forrest, their star player, as one of my rooting interests. I'm sure all you geeks out there remember him.

They used to have a pretty good team back in the 70's. One on One with this guy was filmed there

The non profit nature of universities is basically a national tragedy at this point. Any notion that SU is not trying to be profitable is laughable.

My favorite most obscure basketball star was John Rinka from Kenyon College in Ohio. College basketball's "little engine that could."
