Had the opportunity to watch the DeMatha / Gonzaga game tonight. First time I've gotten to watch Grant play. Also was curious to see BJ Anya play, given how heavily involved with him we seem to be.

Normally, you'd expect a game between teams of this magnitude [perennial powerhouse programs in the DC area] to be fairly close. And given that both teams had several D1 commits [and future prospects], that would have been a reasonable assumption. But Grant's DeMatha squad jumped all over the competition in the 2nd quarter and never looked back.

The game itself was marred by a [fairly minor] incident between two of the guards on the team, and the one from Gonzaga--a Pitt commit, shocking--got tossed for fighting. He'll fit right in at Pitt.

Onto the players we're recruiting...

Grant looked pretty good. He skill set is a bit of a tweener forward, but he showed a lot of potential. Physique wise, he is slender [surprise, surprise--he's Harvey Grant's kid], but he wasn't as skinny / scrawny as what I expected. Don't get me wrong--he's a prototypical, lithe SU forward, but he had better arm definition than what I expected. He also has broader shoulders than a Hakim / Damone, which is usually an indicator of growth potential. Also important to keep in mind that he's still a high school kid, so I don't expect him to be physically mature.

Kid runs like a deer and jumps well. Showed some solid defensive apptitude, which doesn't surprise me at all, as it's important to keep in mind that he's a professional basketball player's son, and has probably benefited from advanced coaching his whole life. But it was more high school level defense--as in he understood when to challenge, how to position himself with arms straight up so as not to draw fouls, etc. But he moved his feet well and can obviously cover ground.

Offensively, he has combo forward skills. Handled the ball a lot on the perimeter--but again, this is at the high school level. Seemed comfortable, but it is hard to gauge how it will translate to the next level. Had one play where he got his man isolated, dribbled well to go from facing up outside the three point line to driving into the paint for a score. Had a nice dunk on a fast break, too. Overall, I'd say that he looks like a pretty good prospect.

Anya was big and strong. But he was a lot lighter than what I expected. The announcers mentioned several times that he'd lost 40 pounds since last year, and that was evident in the fact that while he was a beefy, brawny kid, he didn't have a big stomach or any other signs of being obese. He didn't run great--spent a lot of the game going half-speed. But in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, he was pretty much unstoppable despite going against a big kid on the other team. His lateral mobility didn't seem great--but it was hard to tell, because as mentioned before he seemed a bit gassed most of the second half. Seems very similar to DaJuan Coleman, definitely in the same mold, but overall I'd say a little smaller [6-8, tops]. Would be a solid consolation prize if we lose out on Noel this year, but he is definitely more of an Otis Hill type than the prototypical athletic shotblocker we're used to seeing. Best case scenario: we roll Uconn this weekend, impress Noel and ultimately land him, and then land Anya the following year.

Overall, I'd say that we got a player who'll fit right in with Grant, and that Anya is probably a decent recruit who would be a good prospect in the class of 2013. But I qualify the above by pointing out that it was only one game--tough to draw any definitive conclusions from any one game.

LGO!!!

Cool. Thanks for the report.

Anya would be a good get now that Noel has re-classified.

One additional observation...that Gonzaga PG, Nate Britt, is going to be a good player for the Tarheels.

Watched the game myself, and I agree with everything the OP stated. Grant was better than I expected. He's got a decent handle, and is quick off the dribble. He gets up and down the court pretty well, and makes good decisions with the ball. I don't think I saw him make one boneheaded play all game. His defense was solid, but not spectacular. Like the OP said, he knows how to play sound, disciplined defense. He knows when to attack, and when to stand straight up and put his hands in the air. One thing I would have liked to see from him is some shots from the perimeter. He seemed really hesitant to take outside shots, and I don't think he had a 3 point attempt all game.

All things considered...I don't think he will be an immediate impact player in his freshman year. I do suspect, however, that he will develop into a solid starter at the 3 for Syracuse.

They mentioned that Anya has a 7 foot 9 inch wing span. I agree he's probably 6-8 or 6-7 and Jerami is more like 6-5 rather than the 6-8 the announcers mentioned. I have seen Grant and Anya side-by-side and IMHO Anya has him by two inches.

Robinson didn't get into a fight. The first T he swatted a guard for Gonzaga on the break and talked a little trash. The Gonzaga player pushed Robinson and they were called for double T's. In the second half a Gonzaga guard pushed the ball into Robinsons chest after the whistle. Robinson pushed the ball into the Gonzaga players back as he tried to walk away. They were then both hit with double T's and Robinson was ejected since it was his second T. At no point did he fight anyone. He made a mistake and let his emotions get the best of him. Luckily for him his team still won.

The announcers, ESPN's recruiting guru Paul Biancardi and Tom Lemming said they have watched the kid for 2 years and he has never done anything like this before, he's always under control.

Nothing was going to stop DeMatha last night. It was a revenge game on their home court on national TV and everyone raised their game.

Grant is taller than 6'5" bro. Anya is taller, but not by much.

I wonder how much of a shot we have at Anya considering how similar he is to Coleman - unless he thinks Coleman is a one and doner. He'd also have to compete with Rak and Baye. Who knows - hope we get everyone we're after :) And I agree with section 314 - Grant is definitely closer to 6'8 than 6'5 imho. Isn't he listed at 6'7 - seems about right. Although I'll give Orangeyes the benefit of the doubt as well. Can't wait until he's in a Syracuse uniform whatever his height is! Will likely not see playing time until his sophomore year. Would be great if we could redshirt him like we did Cooney this year. Although, that has not been the JB way for the majority of his career. Guess we'll see what happens.

Let's Go Orange!!!

On a sidenote: You'd think that three guys who specialize in High School Basketball would have a few more talking points for their infrequent showcase. They started out by saying there were 10 potential D-1 players on the two squads and really only talked at any length about five: Robinson, Grant, Britt, Britt and Britt.
Lots of the same stuff over and over.

First, to me there didn't seem to be that much difference in height between Anya and Grant ... there is a definite difference in bulk tho. Anya's one big guy ... in the Coleman mold. He is definitely a 5. Not agile enough to be a 4 ... could never cover the wing. If Coleman stays 2 years (likely) than Anya may not be a recruiting option ... altho it wouldn't be bad having 2 bulksters in the middle. Can't imagine him with 40 more lbs on him.
Second, Anya was definitely winded ... problems getting up and down court especially especially when the game tempo picked up. Would be a problem for the SU transition game. But DC2 will have to lose weight as well ala Fab. He did take up room in the middle tho... a problem that Gonzaga had trouble dealing with. Good game smarts. Players on the floor all around him with nowhere to go ...that backward dunk was awesome.
Third, our Jerami. Actually reminds me of KJo or Hakim w/o the outside shoot ... altho I do believe he made a 3 last night. A definite slasher who likes to go to the basket. One bad decision I saw. He went to the basket with a ton of Gonzaga players in the middle and got totally rejected. He's got a good handle tho ... he brought the ball up court, credibly, on several occasions. He also passes well. I think we got a good one. Not worried about the weight he will be playing the 3 (not the 4) and KJo and Hakim are not exactly heavy weights. Need more speed and agility and the 3 ... both of which he showed last night ... and he can put the ball on the floor and drive. And he seems to shoot the free throws pretty well. I like him ... so that's a pretty good endorsement right there;)

Yep, confirmed here as well. Having been to several DeMatha games this year, I always take a look and my 'eye test' would put Grant and Anya at the same height. If anything Grant seems ever slightly taller at times. I usually sit about 5 rows up from half court on the opposite side of the gym from the entrance

I also thought Grant and Anya played awesome last night. It was great to see Grant drive a lot more than he usually does and show off that part of his game. Someone mentioned Grant seems like a point forward. He rarely brings the ball up the court but he is a point forward in the sense that he is always at the top of the key and I've been impressed with his passing this year from there. He almost never takes a 3 point shot because it would not be within the flow of their offense. I did notice as well he could have taken several and seemed hesitant but every time that happened, there were still 20-25 seconds on the shot clock. Jones would have probably chewed him out. Not to mention his teammates, Bell, #12, and last night Lyles who played out of his mind are all good shooters.

Anya is usually pretty good with his jump hook but it was way off last night. Otherwise, he's dunking machine most games and the one sequence where he blocked 3-4 shots in a row showed his spring when he keeps his feet underneath him.

No idea how in the world DeMatha lost to Gonzaga earlier this year WITHOUT Britt in the lineup! Jenkins did go off that game which I think gives Grant more props for his D on Jenkins last night.

The 2nd Robinson technical I thought was a ticky tack. #12 on Gonzaga shoved the ball into Robinson's chest after the whistle and Robinson retaliated by doing the same. It happened right in front of me and seemed to me like a good opportunity for the refs to get the two kids together and give them a warning to shape up. That ref crew has been horrendous all year though especially the old guy with the mustache and the younger guy. I can't count how many terrible calls they've made this year.

The place was electric last night. Great atmosphere. Big game DeMatha vs Paul VI @ DeMatha to finish the season on February 19th!

Good post. I agree. Cant wait till he wears Orange.

oh great here we go

Thought that Grant looked real good. Definitely fits the SU forward mold. Nice shooting touch. Great stroke and form at the FT line. Pretty good handle too out on the perimeter. Had 18 points. The announcers spent most of the time talking about Britt--did you know he's going to UNC--they only said it about 100 times. Nice player but Grant played a big role on the winning team and they didn't give him 20% as much play as Britt.

They did, but he is immediately recognizable as the type of punk-a$$ player Pitt loves. He'll take very well to their eye gouging tactics. Seriously, I don't care what he has done for two years, his high school team gets a game on national TV and he punks out to the extent that he gets ejected?? REALLY? What a loser.

FYI that team picture is over a year old.
