Great news-Jerome Smith to return next year

I don't know if this will go over well or not... but I prefer Morris II over Rome moving forward for next year.
We've seen out of McDonald so for that he doesn't seem to be a guy that force feeds carries to any one running back. Smith got slightly less than half the carries of PTG, Morris and McFarlane combined - significantly less if you count Hunt's rushes.

FWIW, I think they'll all get their touches.

As far at Rome and PTG coming back and the ‘log jam’ it creates I’d guess (and hope) that all bets are off with who’s the ‘starter’. There shouldn’t be any starter by default because Rome imo didn’t do anything to make me believe he’s got a hold on the job. With M&M entering their 3rd year (and 2nd spring) I would expect a clean slate going into spring and everyone on even footing. The competition for that starting spot should be fierce and may the best kid win.

Does this make everyone that was panicking because we weren't recruiting RBs feel a little bit better?

That was my thought too. Might scare a real talent away. Hopefully we can still get someone. Always need at least 1 rb a class.

We're not recruiting any running backs right now for good reason and losing 50% of the current backs next season means we should be in line to land a real talent (or two) next winter. This works out good.

You aren't the only one. Jerome Smith had a nice year and is a nice RB. It just so happens that he's not the best RB on our roster. Good problems to have. Re: next year, no matter whose coming back, GMII isn't going to be kept off the field. Glad Jerome is coming back though (if he actually does).

The hay isn't in the barn yet - going to take one more year for that job to get done.

I would love to see Jerome Smith get the ball a ton during the bowl game in an effort to get him the 160 yards needed to get to 1,000 yards on the year. Obviously, it assumes we play a team that isn't good at stopping the run. I want a win first and foremost, but if it can be done while getting a win, it should be. Hell, most of us including me think he should've gotten the ball a lot more this year anyway. It's more for SU's sake than his, as a long year-after-year streak of 1,000 yard rushers is a good thing that I think appeals to recruits. We can run the ball, we've always run it well. Will you be the next SU 1,000 yard rusher?

We will have the best on paper rushing attack in the acc next year and prob our most talent and depth we've had in a long time.. We may even have a decent pre season magazine ranking... Really looking forward to next season. Hey even if we start at 45 next year we have a chance win a few games to start and crept toward that top 25. Yes this is a very long ways away from happening but I am very optimistic for next season. Until then let's secure that bowl spot! Woo

If we go to a bowl and win it, I could see us being ranked top 45 next year pre-season losing next to nothing as far as the casual fan sees it. We know we're gonna lose some valuable people, but the casual fan doesn't. This team has to be much improved next year even without new talent coming in if Hickey and Jerome come back let alone West. We are relatively young right now.

Until proven otherwise, I assume that Florida State has the best everything on paper.

Glad to have back our leading rusher the past 2 seasons, a guy who averaged 1 TD per game this season and an all ACC performer. Loaded in the backfield.

My initial reaction was that we've got a logjam at RB but, if anybody gets hurt, all that depth could save our season.

Morris + McFarlane better get all the carries after Rome. PTG shouldn't even see the field IMO.

Hope this doesn't screw up George's development.

While I'd love for the young guys to play more - there is no accounting for senior leadership and experience. Plus, both Jerome and Prince are high character guys.

Neither player had the long runs PTG did this season. I love the young guys - but PTG is an asset, right?!?

THIS.

Jerome's a character guy. Never seen anything from Prince that would make him stand out as a character guy. Character guys don't get stabbed...

remember one thing...he said"plans" to be back

He better come back.

We've had better backs than him over the last 15 years who couldn't cut it in the NFL. Jerome is a good college back but I don't see him playing in the pros.

Student I know at SU said he runs into PTG all the time and said he's a real nice guy. FWIW.

I'm sure he is. I just don't call people "high character" if they don't really stand out as one. Jerome has proven to be one on and off the field.

You can NEVER have too many experienced RB's.

Agree. Over the course of the season, at least one will get hurt. Jerome coming back is a good thing.

I don't worry too much about the development of the others, they'll be 3rd year sophomores next year. And while they certainly look ready to step up, they'll still have 2 more years to be the two primary backs (unless we land some superstar who leaps them, another good problem to have).

The only thing the pessimist in me worries about is early on if all 4 are healthy, McDonald trying to juggle that. No one will get in a rhythm, but you want to give them all a chance on the field.
