Great NY Times story about 60th anniversary of Syracuse Nats title ...

Anyone who doesn't think there is a direct and indirect relationship between the huge local fandom of Orange hoops and the existence of the Nats is sorely mistaken. The Nats made Syracuse a basketball town.

Awesome story. Love it when the Sixers rock these:

You've got that right.

always felt that way too.

Syracuse and really the Dome...was how the kids of the 50s & early 60s, now with their kids in the 70s & 80s filled the vacuum of having a local 'pro team'.

avg 20k a year for 20+ hoop games in cny is just silly-stupid.

My Grandfather was the trainer on that team. He had some great stories. We actually just sold the warmups for 8k a few years back.
My Mom worked in the ticket office back then. Whole different era then.

I've heard a lot of great stories. My Dad was the ball boy as well. Saw some all-time greats. Lots of stories about fights.

The only time I ever saw my Dad visibly angry was at a Nats game. The Nats had handed out free horns at the gate - like those vuvuzelas at the World Cup. To say my Dad was annoyed would be an understatement. After the game we marched right up to what must have been Biasone's office and he gave whoever was there a major piece of his mind.

My father used to have season tickets when he was a kid. Loved the Nats--and the NBA was loaded with stars at the time. Saw lots of great teams / all time great players in the War Memorial. That cultivated his great love of basketball at an early age.

The Nats are still the only team in NBA history to make the playoffs every year that the franchise was in existence. I agree 100% with Toga above--there is no question that the town's foundation as a hoop city was based upon the Nats way back when.
