2003 opener at North Carolina. We won 49-47 in Triple OT. But it seems like a game that has been almost forgotten by everyone due to the fact it wasn't even televised in Syracuse (which seems incomprehensible now). Did anyone here either attend this game, or has anyone ever come across video of it?

Ha, I remember sitting outside on the deck at my parents house listening to that one on the radio. An OLD 1970s looking radio. Safe to say that is probably the last game I’ve ever listened to on the radio - not counting being in a car.

What a weird season 2003 was. Never knew what you were getting from week to week. Nice win at UNC, followed by flat home loss to a Conf. USA era Louisville team. Blown off the field at VT, then blew out BC at home the next week. Lost at Rutgers, blew out ND the next week. 6-6 felt like it could’ve been 8-4 if you watched that team at its best. Some weeks they just inexplicably didn’t have it.

Anthony Smith, Ferri, Gregory, Josh Thomas, Gachelin, Kelvin Smith...lots of talented players on D. Solid OL, Reyes at his best, senior Morant, senior QB who had been getting playing time for 4 years. Should’ve been better.

I went to this game. Johnnie Morant looked like Megatron crossed with Jim Brown. Just an absolute insane display.

I believe we stopped them in triple OT on an inside handoff. Followed by a Syracuse fan flexing like Hulk Hogan for the UNC faithful.

Also interesting that we played two home-and-home series with UNC in the Coach P era, and the road team won all four games.

Good point. This 2003 game was the only one of those 4 that I didn’t attend! Walked out of the Dome furious in ‘96 and 02, but was ecstatic in Chapel Hill in ‘95.

I was there. I just posted somewhere else that the fans were throwing free bags of nachos that were placed in every seat, at me and my friends. It was a great game even though SU was awful back then.

I was there. North Carolina basketball was coming off an 8-20 season. (Cuse was 30-5)

I met RayinVa orChesBayRay at the time there. If I recall correctly it was freshman Clifton Smith that smacked their back about a quarter millimeter from the goal line on their two pointer. Game Winning Tackle.

Came back from 34-17. Missed a FG when we had first possession in the second OT and I think Loius Gachelin(?) blocked their FG to win it. The write up in the link says Reyes scored in the second overtime but it is wrong. second OT was two gooseeggs. Orange missed FG and then blocked the NC FG that would win it.

Cuse did this again on the road again Auburn in like 2005 if think.

Validate me internet.

My favorite was the Morant kickoff return to the 50. First play from scrimmage, 50 yard pass from RJ to Morant. 7 points.

Good amount of orange in that crowd.

We lost that Auburn game in 3OT

yea, but in the second OT we missed a FG and then blocked their FG to possibly win it in the second OT, that was my point, that's kind of odd and Syracuse did it twice in the second overtimes of two separate road games two seasons apart

I was there. Almost got into a fight at a local famous bar after the game. Some kids started getting mouthy and pushy.
Me, at 6' 220lbs was the smallest of the 3 of us. The others were ex college athletes, including a D-1 FB LB.
The hubbub ended when my buddy pinned one of the kid's arms to his sides, picked him up about a foot of the ground, moved him about 6 feet out of the way, while saying " I will crush you."
Things were cool after that.

Auburn was 2002. Nunes comes in to lead that improbable last drive in regulation.

I either just gave you or removed 3 years from your life. You’re welcome (or sorry).

Clifton was gone after 2002. I think it was Kelvin Smith.

I was there...I think I did some research and let people know on the board (which one was it in '03?) where to park. As I recall it was a lot behind a church?, library? off Franklin. I think I bought an extra ticket off Chip (although I didn't know it at the time) in the parking lot for my sister. Chip wasn't happy when I negotiated the price down...as I knew singles are hard to peddle.

That game was the infancy of doing/organizing pregame tailgates...I gave the parking info but there were a few random Cuse fans there...but everyone was into themselves. Several set up mini tailgates out of their truck, SUV or trunk with a few chairs, mini-grills and cooler. This was back when Internet meet-ups for sports events was still weird. I didn't tailgate back then. The UVA game in 2004 was genesis of our Fine Mess away game tailgates...

RJ Anderson was a converted LB who played QB for us. He was serviceable at best up til his senior year. First game out of the gate, we score a ton. It was like a passing light went on for him as a senior. He actually looked like a QB.

Was there with all the hitler youth above who mentioned they were there. Remember seeing a whole bunch of us but as mentioned above it was pre our board and tailgate activities.

It was the weekend of my bachelor party with and Attended by my 10 best HS buds who came in from all over the country, think we stayed in Charlotte and rented a huge van dubbed the "evil van" with and for the shenanigans going on in it, picked people up along the way and wow what a weekend. On the ride back Sunday it was a hangover of legendary proportions with my ankles looking like swollen kankles for having overloaded the kidneys with too much imbibIng.

That game was nuts, just nuts, what little I can remember of it. Was your typical we're great, we suck game all over the map Syracuse football game. What I recall the most are two things: the post game celebration with the team coming right to us was of the charts raucous and as celebratory as I ever seen before or after.

Then all juiced up post game walking amongst their students one of us carrying a small SU flag, one of their misguided students had the temerity to try and steal it in his anger and frustration, needless to say he wasn't successful and the thing I recall was just how fast him and his UNC preppy friends backed down after starting the whole thing. It was us vs. 10x as many of them and they were so afraid of the big bad New Yorkers thinking we're all from the city or something (at least half of us lived in the Carolinas by then).

Added to a great overall weekend with my best buds that we still talk about to this day.

My favorite part of the RJ experience was coach P calling him by his given name, Robin, and never RJ.

I was there.

Smith, the LB made the stop at the goal line in OT to preserve the win.

Was not at UNC game but was at the aforementioned 3OT game at Auburn. Favorite football game I have ever attended, aside from Miami ‘98. Was sitting about 10 rows up in the end zone that Jeremiah Mason blocked that FG. Really fun game, even though it was a loss.

I remember it to this day. I had just moved into a new house, didn't even have our couch yet as it was being delivered in a couple of days. I sat in my living room on a folding chair, listening to the radio, eating Twin Trees sausage and mushroom. Don't think I'll ever forget.

Yes, met you in that lot. Drove down from NYC just because there was no TV. What a crazy game it was.
