Greg McElroy: Person ‘in the know’ believes Nick Saban will return to coaching

Need one more Fran recruiting win. Bring Saban in to coach the defense. Championship.
No. What he did in Alabama is his crowning achievement. Let it alone and enjoy life. IMO.

Spent 8 years as an assistant including SU in '77, 3 years assistant in the NFL, 2years as a HC at MI State and LSU and 17 years as HC of Alabama with 7 National Championships. 292-71-1 as HC college.

He wouldn't be as effective now that everyone can pay players the same as he could when he was at Bama.

Saban loves coaching but hates what big-time college football has become. He has more money than God, so his love of the game could lead him to a Division 2 or 3 team -- not for the money but to indulge that love. And he wouldn't have to do all the recruiting.

Same reason coach K stepped down.

Would be cool to see him coach an Ivy League team.

This is so silly, like that rumor last year that he was going back to his home state to coach WVU. I'm really surprised mcelroy had the stones to touch on this. Finebaum says the opposite, which is probably more accurate.

I would have thought the same thing, but Bama has 5 x 5* commitments now - much more than any other team.

Not true. They can still pay more than alot of teams. There's no cap. The team with the craziest boosters wins.

They sure can but Saban isn't going back there nor likely any other SEC school. The list of options with that type of spending ability is short. It'd be cool to see him go back to Sparty and see if he can build where he was pretty much a .500 coach prior OR NC State and square off directly with Belichik in state or some other mid level team. Hell, go build Oregon State into a viable conference addition or Wazzu

If he decided to come back, it would be a well funded school, and he would pretty much have his pick. You may have a couple that would say, "Nah, we're good."

Why are you so certain he wouldn't go to an SEC school? You don't think LSU would welcome him back with open arms? They'd have Kelly's crap thrown out on the front lawn before he knew he was bought out.

Why leave Bama if he wanted to be at an SEC school? I know nothing about his motives nor potentiality of a return actually coming to fruition but... if I'm 71, have already won everything as a coach, and have obtained multi generational wealth... I'm looking for a challenge or staying retired. Hell he can come coach Cuse hoops next year if he wants or an Olympic bobsled team

If I'm 71 with his money, I don't even think about working ever again, but people like him don't think like normal people.

He left Bama because he didn't like the NIL/portal climate. If he comes back, and I'm not convinced he is, maybe it's because he's seen how things are going and decided it's not as bad as he thought. Or maybe he just didn't think he'd miss it so much. Regardless, I don't think he puts himself behind the eight ball by going to a program hamstrung by finances. He wants to win and understands you win with the best players and you get the best players when you can afford them.

He turns 74 on Halloween. Otherwise, agree. I would retire right this second if I could, but these children living in my house apparently can't feed themselves yet.

Yeah, I didn't research the age. Just went with what the previous dude said.

Replaces his buddy Bill at UNC. Those two probably worked that out a year ago.

As I stated in an earlier post, he loves the GAME of football, not the BUSINESS of football. I would not be surprised to see him at a lower division school (or even a high school) where he can teach kids, enjoy the game, not lose sleep over recruiting, and give the sleazier aspects of football the finger.

Maybe. I think he also likes winning at an elite level. Would he be satisfied competing at a lower level?
