GRob set our program back a decade

The program was set back a decade or sure. Last year was our 10th straight season that fell well short of what this program would like to accomplish. GRob certainly had his contribution to that. Rank him wherever you want on that list, but to only blame him is taking the easy way out.

other than lee corso grob is the worst coach in the history of college football

Four years with a 10-38 record is "back". And we have been digging out since. That's my definition of "back". And it's year 9. One shy of a decade.

Huh? Grob was 10-38 but he wasn't here 9 years.

The comment was that Grob set the program back a decade.

If he literally set us back a decade then we won't be 6-6 again until 2019.

Right?

Right?

And that's if 6-6 is considered back.

I didn't say either of those things. I railed on the decade comment.

Those were Infanti's words today on his show. He mentioned Grob's hiring was big mistake. A west coaster who had no idea of the recruiting landscape in the East among other things.

I know. But Steve was relaying what he was told about the "decade".

Buzz Shaw and Jake Crouthamel set the program back.

I didn't agree with everything Paul did as coach. He certainly made some difficult to defend decisions, however he was getting killed in the arms race.

I'm in no way a PP apologist but Jake and Buzz bear the blame for the decline. TGD with his choice of GRob accelerated our run to the bottom.

There is a lot of truth to this. P takes a ton of heat, but it was more than just P. He had subpar facilities to pitch to kids thanks to Jake and Buzz. TGD hurt us initially with his handling of the P firing... It cost us Ray Rice and another big time impact player (I forget now who it was). If he keeps P to start one more season, then we have Rice on campus and some good solid talent to work with when he makes the inevitable coaching change. There are so many things that could have been done differently to stop the hemmoragging. Better late than never, I guess. We're finally on the right path, and TGD deserves a lot of credit for that too. I would say that the move to the ACC cancels out his GRob gaffe.

GROB was awful. P was bad at the end. But I'm sorry neither set back the program a decade. GROB had had the opportunity to turn it around and show signs in his five years. He did nothing. Marrone inherited an awful situation, but to use GROB as an excuse is BS to me now. It's pretty much all his kids. He should be Atleast going to bowl games every year. I didn't buy blaming P for Greg's struggles by year 3 and I don't buy blaming Greg if Doug continues to struggle. At some point you make your situation. No excuses.

There's a lot of blame as to why the program fell like it did and it was a top to bottom mess. I agree with orangeblood, stop the excuses and blame game and help this program get to where it needs to be and show up strong each weekend these guys have a home game and support these kids. This goes for the coaches as well, don't be a bitch be a solution. It was a mess so that means you have to work that much harder, then so be it.

That was me Dan. I had to tell him to tone it down a bit as it was in ear shot of everyone, players included. But yeah it was what it was.

Casullo was openly talking like that to anyone who would listen for about 12 months.

That said, regardless of what some here wanted to believe at the time, it didn't take Casullo saying it to see it. You could see it on the field.

As a side note, a friend on the Staff (Marrone's) no longer with the team, told me directly that our facilities were the worst he had ever seen at any school.

This is beyond sad...

"Huh? Grob was 10-38 but he wasn't here 9 years."

Blame whoever you want, but the program has been in shambles for nearly a decade. Just because a new coach arrives doesn't mean the program has recovered, even if he ultimately ends up with great results. The results of those previous years linger when trying to recruit top level players, who are needed to get the program to where it could/would be. Even a 9-3 year this year would not necessarily mean we are back.

P was bad (especially post-2002). GRob was atrocious (2005-2008). That's 6 straight seasons of plummeting in every aspect of the program.

Recruiting, no upgrades to facilities, lousy lousy coaching, ESPN Bottom 10, a very tempermental fan base and horrible on-field performances led us to the day DM got hired.

He took over a shatshow, and is working on rebuilding it. Put me in the believer column.

Can't freaking wait for Saturday!!! Thank god there isn't work on Monday because I still won't have my voice back!

Unfortunately the fact is our national perception is that we are still a G-Robesque team. So yes, I beleive we are still digging out of the G-rob years. It is going to take a couple of consecutive winning seasons (or maybe a win over a topped ranked school ala U$C perhaps) to gain some traction in the eyes of America.

This is the legacy of Buzz and Jake.

Jake should have been screaming from the rooftops that Buzz was taking football-generated money (e.g. Fiesta Bowl '92) and doling it out across campus instead of reinvesting it back into the program. But Jake spent the last part of his career resigned to everything that came up, and didn't seem to want to fight for anything (conference movement says hello as well).

Still, Gross like spending money like Mrs. Scooch apparently, so it's baffling to me why it's taken so long to get facilities on the right path.

That was my point. Guys like Cassullo say that because it's the easy thing to say. Who knows if he realizes he would have said the same thing had that regime started in 2005 instead of 2009. GRob was a problem within a bigger problem.

Wow, doesn't anyone tire of these type of debates, we have stunk for almost 13 years, minus 2 seasons. In addition, the facilities were/ are probably the worst of any BCS program, that really isn't debateable. It has had a huge impact on the program and will continue until we upgrade a few real soar spots. That said, we are where who we are, have to keep pushing forward, more wins, more money, more facilities. At this point, we think we have to see if marrone can get us back, jury still out, 2 seaosn with promise, 1 that was a disaster. This season will speak volumes.

Hey I like Casullo, know him, think he is a better coach than given credit for but he did not fit the mold with Marrone at all. That is my opinion. Bad hire by Doug and Bob dug his own grave here because of his short temper and yes loose lips. he is who he is. I believe Casullu's outlook to be accurate when he came here, how else do you suck that bad, poor coaching, poor recruiting, poor facilities equals a program with marginal talent. Sure we had a few guys but zero depth. Which is why I said, Doug did a good job for 2 years bad job 1. We need more athletes, period, we needed more 12 years ago, need more today. GROB got a few decent kids

For whatever it's worth, our here in Utah your standard BYU or University of Utah fan is a fairly well rounded college football fan. Whenever people find out I'm from Syracuse they bring up how terrible our last coach was. We're not considered a powerhouse or anything to them, but there is some respect for where we are now. Based on the sample I'm working from drawn from Utah, I'd say there's some reason to believe that perception of our program has improved at least somewhat. We've gone from being known as a team with a really bad coach, to a team that's a lower tier BCS team. That feels like a fair assessment of our standing to me.

Jake was a company man. He was never going to throw Buzz or the financial bean counters under the bus.

to me, a program being "setback a decade" means it will take a decade to recover. It does not mean it was set back to what it was a decade ago. GRob screwed up so bad, it will take a long time to recover completely. A decade? Maybe. I hope not.

P sucked at the end that's why he got fired. GROB was just worse not worth debating. They were both bad.

Pasqualoni won six games, beat Pitt, UConn, BC, Rutgers and won a share of the BE and went to a bowl his final year.

All without the upgrades and money Robinson received.

Robinson won 10 games in the next 4 years.

Don't compare the two.

No way there was equal talent levels between HCDM's 8-5 team and Coach P's teams of the mid to late '90's...not even close. P always found a way to under achieve with above average talent.

Fiesta, Orange, Liberty, Gator, Music City and Champs Bowl.

I'll take that underachievement.

What did you think? That we had NC talent?

You're nuts if you did.
