Guess the ACC bowl team destinations

Syracuse would have gone to last year's Orange Bowl at 9-3, if the bowl wasn't a designated semifinal.
2019 Virginia football is having a strikingly similar season to 2018 Syracuse football.
  • Both squad started well outside the Top 25
  • Both were ranked 6 or 7 weeks by season's end
  • Both offenses were fueled by senior QBs that were "Face of the Franchise" types
  • Two head coaches in new programs deliver long-awaited breakthrough campaigns
  • Both lost to Notre Dame
I am sure Hoo's That will be here in less than 3 minutes to refute this, but I think we were a slightly better team. We scored 100 more points in the same amount of games. The two defenses are remarkably similar, perhaps with a slightest edge to UVa (the 62-point ACCGC skewed things a tad).

The biggest difference is UVa won their division (we gave Clemson a very real run on the road last year) and got to Charlotte for the ACCCG. This might be too harsh, but UVa was the tallest midget in the Coastal this year.

Beyond that, our timing last year was poor, in that the Orange Bowl hosted a National Semifinal, thus relegating SU to the Camping World Bowl. SU earned a NYD Bowl bid last year, but it did not come to pass due to a flawed ACC bowl contract.

If the Cavaliers can best Florida, they could have an argument. I don't see that happening, however, as they are 13-point dogs.

Remember, SU finished last season ranked No. 15 in both polls.

If we beat Pitt last year we likely get in the NY6 anyway.
It's our own fault for not winning a game we should have won and the refs didn't give Pitt a TD on that fumble return.

Virginia is like us last year except they played in the weaker division.

Pitt to Detroit and BC to Birmingham. Good stuff.

Pretty sure we would have wound up in Annapolis if we had picked up a sixth win. 6-6 UNC gets the slot instead.

the fumble return gets the most attention, and rightfully so, but I am also still ticked off at that horrific 4th down conversion they gave Pitt when they were blatantly short, I think there was about 2:30 left, we would have been able to run most of the clock out. damn it.

Joke that UVA with a 9 - 4 record going to the Orange Bowl.

Agree, is it slotted in that the #2 team, the loser of the account ship is in the orange bowl? Seems like a joke, geeez, could have been an 8-5 team too from that division. Seems like a gift

I'd only argue with what you wrote if we had beaten Louavul and Da U to finish 11-1.
We'll be motivated to play. The question is will Florida?

The Orange Bowl gets the ACC Champion. If the Champion is in the Playoff, like Clemson is, it gets to pick who it wants. The three it could pick from this year, based on conference record rules were: UVa, Va Tech, and Louisville. UVa was ranked in the last Playoff poll; the others weren't. Last year, SU got a higher-level bowl than Pitt, who lost to Clemson in the Championship Game, because SU was ranked and Pitt wasn't. There used to be a guarantee that the Championship Game loser could go no lower than the Sun Bowl in the pickings, but I've been told on our board that is no longer the case.

UF Football is ...
  • 16-9 all-time in bowl games played in the Sunshine State.
  • 4-0 in the Orange Bowl or BCS Champ Game (all wins by double digits, avg. score 35-15)
Considering about 1/3 of the Gators' roster is from South Florida, I think they'll post. (1/3 was an eyeball estimate)

Plus, they have a R-Jr. QB (Kyle Trask, who is very good) who will have to use every game he has left collegiately to show his pro potential. Before jumping in for an injured Felipe Franks, he had not started a single game at QB since high school. He'll be motivated.

As an aside, were we aware that our own Kirk Martin was Trask's high school coach?
