Before the season, I figured that with our vastly improved depth at DL and in the secondary, that even thought the LBs were a "weak link" perceived, the group that would be the initial starters would be reasonably adequate, and that we'd see improvement as a player like Williams, or a high quality recruit like Wallace that Georgia made a late push for, etc. would help stabilize the position. Or maybe Allison. Or Shy. Or that maybe a highly recruited recruit like Fagan would step up and show why he garnered so many blue chip offers. And that as one or more of these players emerged, that the LB corps would go from a position of inexperienced weakness to one of decent quality.

I started to feel less certain when nobody stepped up to challenge the depth chart starters during preseason camp. That the coaches were force feeding those three so many reps could be read in two different ways. One on hand, all three were short on PT experience [especially at LB], so the coaches wanted to force feed them reps to get them ready. But on the other hand--and the worst case scenario--was that none of the other candidates were positioned to make a move.

I think it's a little from column A and column B, unfortunately. I think we really need a Wallace, or a Williams, or another guy to step up to help improve the quality of play of the LBs against the run. If that doesn't happen, we're going to be susceptible all season long to ground and pound.

Please note, I'm not knocking any of the second group. Players like Williams and Shy [in particular] and Wallace have made a big impact on special teams, on a unit that is exponentially improved in coverage.

Didn’t it look like 46 was a little scared being out there or at least timid. Wonder if he was just nervous.

I think you have to give him and/or Shy a chance to see what they can do or else teams will continue to pound us. I would even run Perkins out there at S in some obvious running downs and see if his good play a few weeks go was a fluke or not. Out of the LB's and Safeties, most worried about Whitner and Cisco in the run game. They have been plowed over several times. Not their fault-One is really a Safety and the other is a True Freshman. At least Perkins has been in a college weight program for several years.
