1. Fisher - this thing lines up as a punt fest. No blocks, no shanks, no straight down the middle. Directional 40 yds are the order of the day.

2. Krautman and the place kicking unit. - They execute a freaking PAT properly last year and it's 3-0, never gets to OT.

3. Nassib - game manager mode - take what's there, which doesn't necessarially mean tucking it and getting a yard. Dink and dunk, get the ball out, and take a couple of shots. And if there is a screen pass call coming in, ignor it.

4. Trudo, Mackey, and Chibane - minimize the interior pressure and let a true pocket form. Rutgers isn't pressuring as much as in the past.

5. Defense - somebody, anybody, make a big play. A short field or two can make all the difference.

--------------------------------------------------

Rutgers has scored 13, 10, and 13 in regulation the last three games. For all of Rutgers rep, SU has had the better defense in all three games. They had 5 yds rushing last year.

How about one for the coaching staff too.

No need to over think this game plan or add any unnecessary paranoia and confusion. The gameplan should be pretty simple-

a. Pressure Nova early and often. Hit him in the freaking mouth so he doesn't forget about it.
b. Tackle, Tackle, Tackle ala last week.
c. Utilize the TE. You had plenty of practice doing this last year but he could be a great safety net when that pocket collapses.
d. Run the mis-direction, get Broyld/Gulley in space.
e. Do not call plays that increase risk of turnovers! (ie sweeps and fades)

Those are the keys to success for this coaching staff.

Lets Go Orange, like John Thompson lets end it with a win.

This guy.

I would add that the WRs cannot allow bump and run to swallow them. The less release they get, the more likely Nassib is to take off, the more likely we are to fumble.

Everyone needs to hold onto the football on Saturday.

I'd like to see us stick with the run more than we have so far.

And... yeah, can't do it. I'm out.

Key the "we don't need you" crowd. Whatever.

ACC can't come soon enough. Can't believe some of us have already accepted that our offense will be terrible again. Combine that with the high octane viewing experience that is the Big East and good gravy, people should be more amped for the monkey stuff fight scheduled at the zoo this weekend.

If they can impose their will on offense, god bless 'em, but I don't think the team is there yet. Why do you always default to the "offense will be terrible"? There's another team on the field, and they can probably take away a lot of what SU would prefer to do. There's no shame in accepting reality.

Rutgers is a flat out very good to excellent defense. Their offense is pedestrian at best. SU can force it, go down in a blaze of glory and risk being routed by half time, or play smart, execute what you are capable of, and not beat yourself.

If SU throws the ball 60 times and loses 52 - 21 they aren't going to get any brownie points.

The Pitt game was a well managed game that SU won by making more plays and fewer mistakes than Pitt on both sides of the ball. Smart approach to managing the game in front of them as it unfolded.

First, our offense is always terrible.

Second, not beating ourselves is the exact type of thinking that leads us to make decisions that make sure we don't take the game away from the kids.

Basically we're going to try to out ugly Rutgers Saturday.

Cuz yeah. If there is one thing we have lacked around here its ugly football.

I also think its important the CB's fight to get off their blocks on the outside which is an area I think we've struggled in all year. With their gigantic wideouts I'm worried Rutgers will either bust a long run on the outside or maybe more likely a short pass to a receiver, maybe a WR screen, will turn into a big gainer. A couple big plays in this game will be the difference.

You are ridiculous.

Aren't you the guy fixated on 90th rankings on offense? It's ranked 37th this week. The offense hasn't been ranked this high this far into a season since 1998. Have you once acknowledge that improvement. That's after being ranked 114th, 115th, 94th, 97th, and 90th. You must remember those numbers, you've typed them enough in the past. But I guess since you can't use that, time to move on to the next thing to fixate on.

Are they having trouble putting points on the board, no . They left 20 on the field against SBU, 13 to 21 againt Minny (three second half TO's moving the ball in UM territory) and 7 against Pitt. They are probably a TD short a game from where they should be based on the overall improvement of the offense. It's unacceptable but right now they are at 86th compared to 83rd last year.

For every other significant measure they are up. That's why the corner is turned. They haven't done it against a bunch of tomato cans either.

Total offense 37th from 90th, rushing 83rd from 95th, passing 17th from 65th, pass efficiency 51st from 57th, third down 33rd from 45th, sacks allowed 48th from 81st, long plays, long plays (10yds or more) 57th from 100th, long pass plays 25th from 77th.

The thing hurting the offense certaintly isn't the QB, it's the lag in improvement in the running game compared to everything else.

Is it going to ranked lower after this week, almost certaintly, but there are still 6(7?) games after that, and the going shouldn't be as difficult.

The story is pretty much the same for the defense, total defense 4oth compared to 64th, passing 37th compared to 98th, scoring 61st compared to 73rd, 3rd down 66th from 80th, sacks 20th from 37th, and tackles for a loss 2oth from 45th. They are down in rushing defense 59th from 32nd and pass efficiency defense 91st from 84th.

You want to deny it, ignor it or make snide remarks, have at it, wouldn't expect anything different.

First of all it's isn't always terrible.

They are finally to a point where they can turn it up a notch, commit to it and do it as much as they can, and it's still not enough.

As for trying to out ugly Rutgers, SU is 2-1, and should be 3-0, bullying the bully. Until they get to the point where they can impose their will on offense regardless of who they are playing, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Rutgers is 109th in plays of 10 or more yards. It's not what they do. And that's after playing Tulane (101), USF (1o7th), Arkansas (124th) and Howard, in long plays allowed.

That's why the corner is turned.

The corner is not turned. A corner has been turned. Argue it all you want. It's the truth.

Whenever their is a play to the outside I'm just always amazed how long it takes our DB's to get off all WR blocks on the outside. Assumed with their large wideouts we would be more at risk but maybe not. Thanks for those stats. Makes me feel a little better. :)

We need special teams to show up. How about positive yards on the returns? And absolutely NO turnovers.

"Corner turned, bitches" is the SyracuseFan.com equivalent of "Mission Accomplished"

;)

Play good solid football which means block, tackle and play hard and smart for 60 minutes. We do this we win.

Agreed we tried to do that last year against Rutgers and it cost us the game. We had our foot on there throat and we started to play not to lose the game versus trying to win it. GO is right in that we can't suddenly try to be Oregon on Saturday or run the Fun n Gun from the early 90's but intentionally trying to make this a rock fight is a recipe for a loss as the Rutgers O is much better then it has been in the past with 2-3 pretty good WR and a serviceable back in Jameson. Its time for SU to open the bag of tricks and throw the proverbial kitchen sink.

I don't think SU needs tricks, just play good football and take advantage of the opportunities. If rutgers over pursues make sure they pay for it.

Rutgers D is the poster child for mis direction and trick plays, they are extremely over agressive. Its why WVU scored at will against Schiano Defenses.

Here is my morning snack stab at optimism.

The cracks in the Rutgers facade begin to leak this week, and we see a veritable flood of Rutgers penalties, turnovers and flat out poor execution. SU shows incremental growth in securing the ball, winning special teams play, and scoring points in capitalizing on all of Rutgers many mistakes. An early lead builds and expands so that early in the 4th quarter Charlie Loeb is called on to get some valuable experience running the offense. In the final 4 minutes in an act of mercy and as a tip of the cap to Shiano, on every snap of any possession SU takes a knee in the victory formation.

I guess I just see trick and think misdirection instead, semantics I suppose. You have to sell it though and make sure the guy that is suppose to block, does.

Let's wait to see how the season turns out before we proclaim the corner has turned. I remember people saying the corner was turned in 2010 after the Pinstripe Bowl, after WVU game last year, after a loss to Northwestern, after a loss to USC, and now after a 1 point squeaker where Pitt lost the game more than we won it.

So you have SU at 1-4 and disregard the should have won vs NW? A glass always empty type thinking.
