Hackett story

shafer era is a lot diff had he stayed. Don’t blame him but at that point the play should
have been to go full theo Epstein and hire him as HC and let chips fall as they may.

Do any board insiders know for sure that had DG offered NH the HC position would he have stayed?

Hackett and Marrone designed the offense that enabled Ryan Nassib to re-write our passing record book in 2012. Dino's teams haven't erased that year yet. We sliced defenses apart by throwing medium range passes over the middle.

A lot easier to do when teams have to respect your running game.

I think Tucker and Hough are going to be as good a pair of TB's since Reyes and Rhodes, let alone Smith and PTG.

Those two plus the upgrades at guard that will be playing next year are going to make run game much more productive, which like in 2018, will lift the overall offense, including the passing game, 3rd down and redzone efficiency, and scoring.

and don't forget the defense.

Loved watching that 2012 team. Saw them beat up WVU that year. That offense always made you feelike we could win (remember Missouri and USF?)...this offense im just crossing my fingers not to go 3 and out. Schafer was the logical choice at the time but wonder whrre we would be now.

Probably same spot. hackett would have been fired in 3-4 years. He most likely wasn't ready for the job at that point. You wonder what Shafer would have done if Hackett was hired as the HC though?

He was fantastic that last year, as was Nassib. Just shows how tough it can be here though. We had some pretty rough O in years prior. And the schedule was easier.

I thought at the time if we went internal Hackett was the better choice. He certainly had a lot more of upside. Shafer wasn't going anywhere he had no demand. It is harder to fix an O than a D. We finally had a system in place. The smart move was taking the Hackett risk. Think about it, no McFit and Jerome Smith doesn't get pushed out the door.

His success ultimately would have hinged on who he hired as O assistants. Could he have surrounded himself with experience guys? I also think he gets a longer leash than Shafer did as I doubt the O would have been such a mess.

That being said I wouldn't go back and change what happened as that means no Dungey.

Yeah for sure, he was pretty young as well. Would have been a hell of shot they took on him at age 32. He's been up and down since but I don't think anyone disputes that he's always been well liked. May have had some decent recruiting chops but would have needed some assistants with contacts.

Called some great games that season or maybe it was Doug who knows?

Shafer was just a lazy hire, nothing more to it

Definitely a risk. If he was HC/OC then he just needed a solid OL coach and a been around the block Asst HC to help guide him. I know he is generally a dirty word to many but having Paul Hackett as the Asst HC/QB coach and not involved in the actually play calling may have been enough guidance to make Nate a success here.

Always take the O guy over the D guy.

Gross was probably naive enough to think that Hackett would stay on Shafer's staff.

My understanding at the time was that a recommendation was made for both and that it was understood whichever was chosen, the other would be gone.

But you know how rumors go.

Another thing with that 2012 team, is they improved and developed as the season went on. We eeked out a couple of mid-season wins that propelled us. We also lost a game at Minnesota we never should’ve lost. (I think Pugh was out that day).

But that bowl win, was one of the best days I’ve had at a game, what an exclamation point to a great season. Nassib got smoked one play and I thought he was done, but he was tough, came back after a play or two.

PTG and the defense were phenomenal that day.

I think in hindsight after we have seen Hacketts arc its easy to be enamored with him but as a fan I didn’t want him as HC at that time. Certainly had no problem with him remaining at OC but he literally had no experience coaching prior to SU if I recall correctly. He would have likely been seriously overwhelmed and that’s not a knock. Most people would. Glad to hear he has forged his own path and is successful. Who is to say down the road he might not come back this way? Stranger things have happened.

Somebody send Hackett a binder just in case.

This is a solid, level-headed take.

For some reason, I recall Nassib throwing a pick six against Minnesota which I believe was one of his worst passes in a Syracuse uniform. Didn't the Minnesota Coach had some health issue and the team rallied around it. My mind is mushy.

That win was fun at the Pinstripe 2. The one the year before (?) was also awesome with the flea flicker. We felt like we had unleashed a new era. I was so cocky getting on the subway after the game. I remember saying to my buddy this is the last time I will ever go to a snowy bowl game in NYC. We have turned the corner as a program and big things are ahead.

A few days later Marrone was gonzo.

I think his arc has been somewhat up and down. Fired at Jville by Marrone So now he is the OC who doesn't call plays with a hall of fame QB and a head coach who has his own system. Really same spot that Marrone was in when he took the SU job and the brain trust here all said HE DOESNT CALL THE PLAYS!!!!

That said, I think Hackett will be a decent hire for someone as a HC, seems like his personality could suit the college game as well but who knows. He's only 40 and certainly wish him the best

And I agree, I wasn't crazy about either he or Shafer but probably would have chosen Shafer as well. Safer, lazier pick and I didn't think Hackett was ready, he was 32

Peak corner turning.
