image.jpg Here I am, 45, with my kids watching a coach get driven around the perimeter of the dome in a golf cart. They have no idea who he is other than what they've been taught about him.

At twelve, with my father, I watched Ben Schwartzwalder do the exact same thing in 1982. No idea who he was except for what I had been taught. And they clapped, because they knew that they were supposed to.

Great moment.

PS- I don't remember how I got the autograph, but I might remember being rather low at that game. In fact, maybe I'm remembering another game altogether. I'm assuming this program was the same game as the "ride around", but whatever.

*edit* now I think the ride around was after beating Penn State in 1987, but still cool!!

Was there today too with my kids and shared the same experience.

Wasn't here until freshman year in 1987. Great time to arrive.

The memory is fuzzy, but I think the team carried Ben off the field on their shoulders after the Penn State victory.

One thing this program has is a rich history. Today was another good chapter in a long, long story.

Ben was born June 2, 1909 and died April 28, 1993 at age 83.

Dick MacPherson was born November 4, 1930, so he's 84, even older than Ben.

Nothing important. It's just what I was thinking about as they carted him around in the Macmobile.

Thanks to all of you for sharing. Though I live 1700 miles away, I taught my girls to love the Orange. They even call them the ORANGEMEN! Anyway, my father taught me the history of Syracuse as a kid and I did the same. Great to know others are doing the same. Especially great to know that the kids knew what to do (clap) and why. Respect is one thing kids today seem to lack, especially when it comes to history.
