he is my problem with the late penalty call

BIG difference between 4th and 6 with the game on the line and 1st and Goal with plenty of time. No doubt in my mind our defense gets a stop on that 4th down, but as bad as the call was...I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt we were getting flagged the second I saw that on tv. Everyone I was with screamed NOOOOOOO before the ref even threw the flag.

Is anyone still disgusted by the loss? Its a day later, almost 2 days and I still cringe thinking about it.

I wasn't happy with how easily they made it down the field, but the strategy worked had the refs made the right call. It was third down, NW certainly would have gone for it, we make one more stop, and game over. Instead, NW is 15 yards closer with a first down.

I'd like to know how their receiver was so open on the play Reddish lost his helmet.

I didn't really have a problem with the call. It looked appropriate to me. My only issue was that if you are going to make that call, at that critical juncture of the game, you had better make the same call the other way on SU's last possession. I'm not saying we would have won. But those 15 yards would have been huge, and both fouls looked the same to me. Call one, call them both.
Agree

It was sloppy and it bugged the hell out of me. In hindsight, a TO should have been called by the Orange. Christ, it looked like we had one guy rushing for a couple of plays. I hope this stuff gets ironed out.

we all saw what happens when you don't play to the whistle. can't win.

That was certainly true on the biggest fiasco play of the game. But that NW QB had no where to go, he wasn't going to sneak around Lyn and run up the sideline.

I watched it again last night, thought it was an unnecessary call. But Lyn can't even give that ref the chance. It's a fast paced game, your job is to always let that QB know he's going to get hit, but the best players and best teams know when you need to pull up, and that was a classic case. Can't play too emotional.

In watching the replay, I think the next play was more frustrating. They lined up their best WR in the slot. We never switched off, so we had an OLB (albeit an athletic OLB) in man coverage against their best WR. QB never looked elsewhere. TD Northwestern, even though it took a perfect throw.

Just saw video of it for the first time. Very questionable, but still very stupid by Lyn. I don't like them making that call in that situation, though.

EDIT: Jeremi Wilkes also got drilled with a block in the back on the play as the QB was headed to the sidelines.

Somewhere, Toga is smiling about you noticing the block against Wilkes. It was as blatant as the face mask against PTG.

That kind of call is made many times each week. It's a bit B.S., but it's the state of the game -- you don't hit the QB, ever, in any situation that's not a straight up sack in the pocket. Otherwise the flags will come, it's just the way it is. Spruill's roughing penalty was the same -- lousy -- but a call that's made constantly these days.

We played such a stupid game that it's entirely fitting that we may have lost it on a dumb play.

the rule was for late hit out of bounds.. which is essentially the same as the rule for late hit in bounds after the whistle or in the qb's case after he throws the ball. the bigger issue is more that he didn't get hit, if anything its a mild push. players are told to play threw the whistle.. the same is true for the boundary. play until the player is clearly out of bounds..

If the player takes a hard cut, because the DB lets up thinking he is going out of bounds, and then turns up field people are screaming for the opposite reason..

but really had that same push happened on a qb 5 seconds after a throw does it get called for a late hit? 1 out of 20 times and people would be screaming at the ref. if the kid doesn't take a dive it doesn't get called.. we have seen harder contact in basketball not get called for a foul at end of games..

this wasn't a case of an excessive hard contact play to a player who thought he was protected by the sideline..
It was a terrible call. I watched the play frame by frame and the quarterback had not one but both feet in bounds when Lynn put both hands on him. Can not stop forward motion on a dime. If this play was reviewable it would have been reversed... Shades of the Tenn- SU game back in the late 90s when SEC refs stole the victory from SU at the dome

I was shocked I hadn't seen it brought up. He got absolutely drilled.

Agree. And I bet all NW fans were yelling for the ref to throw it before the flag was in the air. As we would in the opposite situation.
