I know they’ve been big losses but I forgot what type or players they were. Someone please refresh my memory of what we’ve been missing

I'm not the one to answer your question. But if they are not 100% ready to go, in shape, rust scraped off, I'd prefer they redshirt and come back next season.

Why not play them the next four (three in heckel’s case) and then see where the team is at? We should know if were bowl bound or not by then. Bowl game is a must.

Williams is a Slayton-esce immovable object I'm the middle of the DL. Can collapse the pocket by leaning on his blocker and, imo, his absence is why the Maryland game went how it did. Having him back would me massive for the run heavy teams left on the schedule and free up our pass rushers to do what they do best.

Heckel has good footwork and hands but had proven a bit light in the shorts against big DTs similar to Williams. If he comes back in could potentially allow two other oline shifts but have a gut feel his injury is more serious than we all think and we may not see him again this season. Additionally, with a bye week to work I'd be extremely hesitant to mess with the chemistry the current 5 are starting to find. Think the big initial misses were LT inexperience and RT needing to get into the condition our offense requires. 5 games in I don't believe those issues to be prevalent as they both were early on. 68 also looks more comfortable at center by this point and not a fan of potentially breaking the rhythm built between he and 13 behind him.

Heckel has already used his redshirt year and a 6th year is no guarantee.

. . . .

I agree with your comment about Heckel.
I see Williams as very athletic overall (watch the video of his tumbling routine), comparable to Black with an extra 15 LBs. Not really a match for Slayton. His return would give us 3 4th year DTs of roughly comparable ability (Ruff and Black being the other two) to provide a better rotation and a layer of depth at the position. An incremental improvement, but not a dramatic step change. The big risk, though, is the lack of depth without Williams as we have a series of tough games left on the schedule.

Would be great to get a grad transfer center if possible and move Heckel back to guard where i would venture he is a better player.

Fair but wasn't saying he was unathletic, moreso he's a freakish athlete for his size ala Slayton. Both he and Slayton are just naturally bigger dudes than the others in the mix and good luck trying to move either of em. The current healthy group are great but try and do more to go around Vs through Olinemen to be disruptive. Bear can do both as Slayton could which pushes the qb a half step deeper which is exactly the mesh point for or DEs to meet qb or ball carrier

Agreed, 2 glaring needs we will most likely have to hit the head transfer route for is an o-lineman or 2 and a defensive tackle or 2.

I think a couple of the freshman defensive lineman will be ready to contribute next year. I also think on the o-line we will have a player or 2 step up already on the team. I think Patrick Davis will take a step up and hopefully White. Carlos will progress as the season continues. Hopefully Aaron moves back out to tackle and heckel gets healthy.

I know Servais was prepping to play tackle (interrupted when Heckel was out in the Spring and half of August). He has played center for two seasons, plus 5 games in 2019. His game experience at tackle — less than a half of the Liberty game. He may be a good fit at tackle but how good?

Ruff will not be back next year. He is a true senior as this is his 4th year playing. The DT options we have returning will be Black, Harper, Okechukwu, Rondi, Tuazama, and Munoz. Hopefully a couple of those can gain some good weight and stay healthy.

When, and if, they get healthy, they should play. I'm not concerned about OL chemistry so much on a line that has played so poorly. There haven't been a lot of instances against P5 competition where guys have been able to get in position to make the necessary blocks. Talent trumps chemistry.
Williams was very solid last year and showed glimpses of being very good. His presence has been very missed this year.

They're both very important relative to the position they play and the struggles we're having at those positions.

But neither is really a superstar. Williams was passed by Black as a starter last year.

Cisco and Iffy are bigger impact guys to get back.
