Are we going to have the block S this year or wear the ones the players are practicing in?

Can we just have the 44 battle axe thing on the helmet? So many schools are associated with a block S.

Because the 44 battle axe thing is already on our jerseys in other places, and it is not representative of the university as a whole? At least the giant block Orange S is associated with us all over the place.

I'd bet, given the mostly positive take on the 44 axe logo - we might see an alternative helmet with that on it eventually. Would be awesome.

the answer is yes. It seems maybe the s hasn't been applied yet.

Hard to believe that the orange pants - the signature of the classic SU Football uniform - like the gold pants of ND - are gone.

I give Dr. Gross credit for a lot of successes - he seems to have brought the Department into the 21st Century - but this and the retirement of No. 44 are mistakes.

Just my opinion.

Saw Strickland retweeting this.

I never thought about what pants ND wears and I've seen them play a number of times. I also respectfully disagree with you on the retirement of 44 as well.

Agree on both counts. Orange is out as the school color for football. Strange to have the name orange still and to see so many ads and clothing in orange. It's like they are ashamed of the past. Hopefully they come to their senses or at least admit orange has been de-emphasized in the football program.

Next year we are getting a full orange uniform that will likely be used quite a bit in concert with the current jerseys. Orange hasn't been de-emphasized forever

I thought I read early on somewhere that we are getting orange but not this year. We will be able to mix and match blue, gray, white, and orange. I may be wrong but that is the way I took it.

I'm translating "next year" as don't count on it happening. There is no reason they couldn't make them and have them ready this year. I wouldn't mind terribly if they phased out orange, but an explanation would be nice? Just so...weird.

I will not turn this into a giant fight (again). To me it's the most tired and basic opinion: That to emphasize orange, everything must be orange.

If the highlight color is bright orange on a neutral like white, navy, or gray - then the orange pops more and remains the primary color - because it's the brightest. Not the most in quantity - but the brightest and meant as important - due to the blandness of the neutral. Every designer is taught this in year one or two in every design program in the country. I got my degree at Syracuse, and was taught this...

I thought it was just more of a slow play. Give us helmets last year, unveil new uniforms this year and then next year give us the orange installment. Makes it seem like we are getting something new from Nike every year. I don't see why they wouldn't make orange an option.

I heard that as well...

That's what has been said over and over and over again. Some people want to complain about the de-emphasis of the color orange, so they do. It's less orange than it used to be, but the orange pants, orange helmets (and orange jersey next year) will be available for the unis. Orange is being de-emphasized in so much as other color schemes for different uniform combination are being emphasized.

This is pretty standard practice at the vast majority of schools, but some here liken us and out tradition (and "traditional uniforms") to the likes of Penn State, Alabama, and Michigan. We aren't them, we don't have their history, our uniforms have never been as intrinsically tied to the program as a lot of people would like to think.

It comes down to people not liking the new unis (fine) or liking the unis they remember growing up or during SU's best years better (also fine). Fact of the matter is that ALL schools brand themselves with different colors, alternate unis, alternate helmets, etc... It's the way it is now, and a lot of people don't appreciate that.

I couldn't care less about the uniforms as long as we win. These unis will grow on me, as past unis have. I really liked our unis the past couple of years, but I'm all for change if it means better marketing, more money in jersey sales, and more money for the athletic program I love.

Here's a link that has a thumbnail showing the mock up for orange jerseys and pants. They ARE coming, this is from the athletic department website. If they didn't plan on having them, why have them in their main uniform photo gallery?

Some keep making that claim but I haven't seen or heard anyone say that we need all orange. I personally hate the all orange. I know many do also.

What did we wear more last year? I think it was the all blues. Looked ridic and not the Syracuse Orange. They might come with the orange pants next year, we'll see. But like others have said, why not this year?

I hope everyone that goes to the Dome wears blue, or white, or gray. Then we'll hear people ask how come there is so little orange in the stands. I know I'll reserve my orange for another day.

Bees, I've heard a lot of people complain about this. Can I ask you what you would like the uniforms to look like? I'm actually interested in hearing. Something more than "MORE ORANGE!" What specifically do you want? Orange pants and helmets as the base look? Would it then be okay to have grey and white as alternate options from time to time without orange?

I ask because I've heard a ton of complaints, but no real solutions. I think the options for orange will be there with the new uniforms, but I also think with so many options, orange won't necessarily ALWAYS be a part of each week's uniform. The Stanford Cardinal wear black from time to time, or all white -- without red, and I don't think that's a major issue. I use the Cardinal as an example because their name is derived from a color much like ours.

And because this is a message board -- I'm really not trolling, I'm interested to hear!

Just some info for you guys from the facility intern in me -- The are not detailed yet and decorated with what you see in the dome because helmets often get chipped, scuffed, beat up, bloodied, and all the fun stuff of football. They practice in the helmets they wear on game days to get comfy with them but they get all dolled up during game week

Plenty of people have said what they like it what they should look like. Since we're talking colors here, many have said orange pants or jersey. I want an orange helmet with orange pants. The jerseys do whatever but the best look with the orange helmet and pants is blue or white. This all blue stuff is crap and the other combos aren't much better. SU is identified with the color orange by fans everywhere. And nobody is saying all orange and nobody is saying never use a one off.

So many schools are associated with a block S.
"So many" ???

These are only 2 other schools that use any variation of a block-S on their helmets.
  1. Syracuse : plain block-S
  2. NC State : red S with the letters 'N' and 'C' inside of the S' loops
  3. Stanford : red S (official logo has a tree layered on top of it)
  4. Michigan State : no longer uses an S on the helmet

So what you saying are we are oddly unique? Go us!
