Hello all. I will be making my very first trip to a Syracuse game this weekend and would like some help. What to do in SYR, game day must dos and tailgates etc...

I am looking forward to this a lot, always had Syracuse as my 3rd team behind Colorado and Michigan and I love the start to this season. We take a random trip to a game somewhere every year and this year we decided to pick Syracuse. Thank you everyone and I hope to stick around here.

Also can someone explain the Rutgers hate? I figure most of it come from them trying to claim to be New York's college team, which I find hilarious. No one I know thinks of Rutgers other than a joke that had 2-3 good seasons 10 years ago.

A terrible program which we were forced to play every year started winning some games against us in the mid 2000s when we were in the toilet (and they were legitimately good) and were pretty mouthy. Also not sure who they would consider rivals other than us or Temple so its a big game for them when we play.

Glad they have fallen off so much in the B1G because I really don't want to drop a OOC game to them in our upcoming series in 2-3 years.

Enjoy the trip!

Good observation about Rutgers. It's like Texas, who has fallen off a bit, being obsessed with Kansas. Besides that, really enjoy your pasion for college football, it's what makes it the greatest sport in the country.

I was up last weekend for the first time in quite a while. Had dinner at Francesca's downtown - excellent food, wine & vibe. Be sure to get to the quad beforehand. You can listen to the band, get a bite to eat, etc.

I've been going to the block party in Downtown pre-game, then taking the shuttle to the quad for the festivities up there.
Park at the Marriot Downtown parking garage (100 Harrison Place), then head over to Shaughnessy's Irish Pub. Outside of the pub is a block party with live music, games, food trucks, a few food and beer tents. Inside Shaugnessy's has a nice selection of beers, and the ESPN radio pre game broadcast is going on. Buy your shuttle tickets for $4 a piece outside Shaughnessy's. Give them your ticket from the parking garage, and they'll validate it for free parking. When you get tired of that scene, get on the shuttle to the campus, and you'll find plenty of bars and restraunts up there. Fagans is a good choice. Head over to the Quad and there are a few food and beer tents, the Marching band, a few games for kids etc. After the game take the shuttle back downtown to Shaugnessy's, and you'll get a free pint with your shuttle ticket.
This has been my routine the last few years, and I like it. I used to just park on campus, and pre-game up there, but good luck finding parking for less than $20, and worst of all, no free pint.

It's really not Rutgers hate. It's Rutgers ridicule that goes back years. They're like the annoying little brother who begs and begs to come with you on an errand, and then, when you're talking to your girlfriend, embarrasses you by picking his nose. That's Rutgers.

Not sure how long you'll be in town, but you should hit the Dinosaur BBQ if you have the time, as it would qualify as one of the "do's" to do in Syracuse. Enjoy!

For all Greg Robinson was wrong about the only thing he was right about was Rutgers being a one year fluke.

They are the annoying little brother who wants validation.
Rutgers is to Syracuse fans as Syracuse is to Penn State fans.

For now. ;)

I had no idea they validated your parking...sounds like great way to spend pregame.

That was going to be one of my questions in a later post was Dinosaur BBQ as that seems to get some good publicity. Also had a question on Frank's Plank Road, if that was any good. Plan on being in town most of the time other than going to Niagara Falls Friday and Cooperstown Sunday.

Yup. You bring your parking ticket which you get for free in garage, over to the booth that sells the shuttle passes. When you buy your pass, they put a new barcode on the parking ticket. Now when you leave the garage, and put in the ticket, it costs nothing. So you essentially get to park, take a shuttle to the dome, and get a pint, all for $4. ( roundtrip cost per ticket for shuttle)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I did the Cuse309 formula and used the shuttle from the pub. Did not get to participate in a lot of pregame activities as the females we were with decided they needed to go to the mall before the game "just for a few minutes, so don't just drop us off and go anywhere." 2 hours later we finally made our way to the parking garage. Shaughnessy's was good, watched Michigan give Nebraska their well deserved thrashing.

Seats were in the corner right under the 2nd level overhang. Everything was good except for the frat party going on to the side and behind us where it was just nonstop screwing around and beer being spilled. I think the back of our shirts consumed a total of 4 beers. At halftime we walked around the dome and decided to move up to the 3rd level for the 2nd half for a better view of the whole field. We left right after the TD made it 48-21 to beat some of the remaining crowd out. Definitely enjoyed the atmosphere especially since it is such a unique setting. One thing I have to say, the bell ringing is pure hell when sitting under the overhang where the concrete just traps the sound for you.

Went to Dinosaur afterwards and got it to go because of the wait. Thought it was pretty good but like all BBQ was a little pricey for what you get.

Had a great time and hope to make it back some time in the near future.

The bell is stupid and has to go. We already have the Express locomotive horn, which means something special.

Yeah the horn was fine and I liked that, but the bell was just over the top. Did not help I got a pounding headache before the game, but we all started to feel its wrath. At first I thought it was for each point scored but then it just kept going and going.
