Herbstreit is 100% correct here. Got me thinking about Fran and DART. After year one, it sure seemed like we were building a strong team culture. After year 2, I don't know what to think. Between how the team played and some of the portal departures, it sure seems like we took a step back on building that strong team culture. I hope Fran turns it around this year and DART actually means something.

Or perhaps some of the departures we had into the portal were because they weren't buying into the team culture...

FWIW, all of the portal entries besides Gill, were encouraged to hit the portal by HC Fran Brown.

How many of those encouraged to hit the portal were brought in by Fran and how does that bode for the future with respect to who is being added this year?

Sure they were brought in by Fran, but it shows that no matter who you are, if you do not follow the rules by the coach, you wont be with the team anymore.

Have to remember, this is a HC building a program and we are in year two.

Sometimes youre going to get kids who dont have a personality match or high enough motor. This happens at all of the big boy schools, they just have the depth to hide it. We do not have that depth...yet so its more obvious.

No one bats 1.000. Anyone who's had to hire knows that sometimes a candidate checks all the boxes, crushes the interview, but simply doesn't work out in the job.

Note that the comment was that "some" of the departures were culture related. Not hard to imagine that a few of those were rules-related and others were attitude-related to not getting playing time, etc.

DING DING DING

It is kind of funny that some call Fran a con man and a fraud. But there's silence when he goes old school and pushes guys out for bad behavior and lack of respect for the team culture. The stuff that Marrone did and gave said people a stiffy.

Does that include Ibn McDaniels?

This
In the IT world I’ve hired over 300 people at this point.
I’ve had some real amazing gems but you get those turds that will destroy your team if you don’t cut them asap.
You can put front the best interview/visit and you still don’t know until you are in the thick of it how some people are.
I’ve built an amazing culture for my teams BUT it’s took me a good solid 5-6 years to get to the point if we get a bad fit it doesn’t rock the boat anymore.

Year one Fran got some amazing leaders, McCord basically ran the offense on the field, and this year we really missed that and seemed we had a lot of players looking out for themselves.

I have no issue w any of the culture stuff from Fran. I had an issue w quitting. Still kinda gross we just punted on a season.

To call a spade a spade anyone w a brain had to be confused by it. Next year will be a big one for Fran. As of now I consider him a front runner. Great coaches coach great when things are at their hardest and most challenging.

IIRC he was a bit of a reach.

Had measurables, but no other P4 offers.

Fran took a flyer on him, and for whatever reason it didn’t pan out.
Understood. Rumor he is heading to PSU and his HS coach said he had NFL potential. Obviously he hasnt done anything yet on this level, but was curious as he is a NJ kid and a DB, Fran's speciality.

I’ll sing it till the cows come home, you can’t expect accountability from players when you as a staff quit on a season. I’m not saying Fran is a bad coach or doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt but this year was a terrible look.

I can't lie, the way the QB position was handled this year after Steve went down was concerning and left a bad (confusing) taste in my mouth as a fan. It was the first time in Fran's short tenure that I really questioned whether he and staff knows what they're doing.

I'm hoping some of this were growing pains and lessons learned for a new/young head coach that will take what happened and improve from it. I still believe in Fran but this year was worse than I could have imagined following a 10 win season. This year will be huge for Fran and I think very telling.

I'm pretty sure everyone was questioning what the heck we were doing on defense since day 1.

I had a problem with talking several times about next year while we still had a few games left in the season. Not adhering to the whole "relentless" thing in DART, if you ask me. And this is the coach doing this, mind you, not the players. To me, that makes it even worse.

It sent the wrong message to the seniors, the rest of the players still trying to win, and the fans who pay their good money to come and watch you play (and win) THIS year. If the coach wants to THINK that, fine. But he has to have the discipline to know when he needs to keep his mouth shut publicly about it.

posts like these are hilarious. u hope “dart actually means something.”

have you even been following this team closely?

we had our star QB go down last year which derailed our offense paired with a DC who couldn’t scheme to save his life.

like JRHEETER mentioned, insiders here have already stated that most portal entries were told to leave.

Good point. You see Indiana and wonder why we cant be that successful that quick. But, IMO, Indiana is an outlier. The more I think about it, Fran probably had to take some risks in the portal to plug holes.

Reminded me of a kid who is losing at a video game that resets it.

Always an outlier around our program. We may have hired the wrong guy too. It’s not out of the realm. I’m curious if Chesney turns around ucla quickly because that’ll answer it at a similar program to Syracuse historically.

No matter what Chesney does, he could be a national championship winning head coach for all I care. The right guy was hired.

It's a seismic shift for this sport to be dealing with payments, agents, insta-transfer. So what Kirk is saying, while technically being correct, also seems like a bit of cherry picking.

Two teams are playing to win, one wins. Doesn't mean the others don't have a team culture and just have a me culture. If you're the one winning these close games, it's a lot easier to stick together as a team.

Some coaches probably can't control it at all, they're just not built for it in this new landscape.

He mentions Indiana, but Indiana is in the top 5 of picking up transfer portal players. They're chasing great players and agents just like everyone else.

I hear Nate Bargatze saying in my head "There's a little relenting."
