Here's the Sad Truth About Tonight's Game

I'm not so sure the Johnnies would want to continue to help SU outdraw them at the garden. MSG may want it but I really am not so sure st. johns would. As for GT, I think that will continue.

If St. Johns really had a problem with it, they'd move the game to Alumni Hall. (Carnesecca Arena)

Fact is, they LOVE selling tickets and Syracuse helps them sell tickets... LOTS of tickets.

I see your ny post thread and it makes a lot of sense for SU to start something with Maryland well actually go back to playing Maryland like we did pre big east. But, GT and SU are private schools and I'm not sure if that helps or hurts this rivalry and if we could fill the arena with SU fans against GT it would help us in the DC area and give us an edge over Maryland...I really am not sure which way I'd want to go in this.

Playing GU in DC would do little for building a rivalry with Maryland. It might piss them off because it will make their refusal to schedule GU a little more obvious. And it makes SU look like we still have one foot in the Big East.

Playing Maryland --- and beating them --- will have a huge affect on SU. The DC - Baltimore area is a VERY important recruiting area for SU (from Carmello to Sherman Douglas to Moten). And Maryland has a huge fan base, while Georgetown has very few fans. It's a private school and most of its students aren't even from the area.

With games against MD, Virginia andVirginia Tech plus being in the ACC, we are going to have a lot of exposure in DC. I gotta wonder if playing Georgetown has that much incremental value.

Now St Johns and Villanova are a different deal We need continued presence in both NYC and Philadelphia. De were are going to have covered.

We'll still play Georgetown and we'll still hate those douchebags.

Exactly and either SJU or UConn will fawn over the chance to play an annual game at MSG.

Agree with both. The SU/G'Town series is not going away.

And until UConn is an ACC member themselves, I'd like to see ESPN develop a "Northeastern Classic Challenge" doubleheader with us and Pitt versus UConn and the Johnnies at MSG on an annual basis - one year SU vs UConn and Pitt vs SJU and the next SU vs SJU and Pitt vs UConn and play the games in January.

Cheers,
Neil

I remember when Niagara and St Bonaventure were our rivals and that went away with the formation of the Big East. When we go to the ACC its time to move on and we'll form new rivalries. As rick said we'll always have the Big East but there's more important things in the world then 2 teams.

I still see absolutely zero reason the ACC will expand. The SEC is going to stay at 14 with the Big 12 surviving. The Pac-12 stays at 12 because there's really no other attractive options. The 10 stays at 12 because ND ain't walking through that door. Why would the ACC be the only one to go to 16 and add those two? Makes zero sense and the ACC isn't in the business of being a charity to throw a liferaft to those two.

Great post, I think Maryland is ripe to become a good rivalry. They think they have a rivalry with Duke which isn't mutual, we have a huge presence in the D.C. area, I see it becoming something good for both of us to form.

Honestly, this series holds nowhere near the importance to me that it once did.

It's almost odd to hear the press talk about how great it is, and how important this game is, because personally, I feel only a fraction of that for this game.

For me, the teams I really want to beat are UConn, Pitt, and Louisville. Georgetown is probably 4th, I guess, though Nova has been a big game, though maybe not for a couple years.

It's definitely a generational thing, but I'm 33, and I'd bet that if you look at fans younger than I am, they feel even less about this game. How big can the rivalry be if at least 25-35% of the fan base does not consider it to be the biggest one?

May have more to do with the fact that UConn, Pitt, Louisville, and Nova to a lesser degree are the teams that we've had difficulty beating. Whereas in the 80s it was Georgetown that gave us fits.

Here's the sad truth about this post: if we never left the Big East our basketball and football programs would be Colgate in 20 years. So I'll take relevancy in the long term rather than old fashioned rivalries in the short term.

If we stayed steadfast with the Big East we would die because the Big East is going to die. At the very least it will be greatly diminished when everything shakes out, unless an innovator actually takes over in Providence.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I disagree with that completely. The GT game means something to me every year because of the games in the 80's.

They are the enemy and for that reason it makes it great.

44cuse

And Syracuse - Penn State used to be a great football rivalry.

Not a good idea to put much faith in what one reads in the NY Post.

Good points but I'm not so sure Nova and St. Johns would like it but since the Johnnies play Duke so often maybe they'd still want to do it. I want SU to play in NYC and Philly as well.
