Hey, Cooney deserves a shout-out thread as well ;-)

Concur.

I was surprised how tentative he was to shoot. IU was sagging way off, and it looked like he didn't even want to entertain the idea of shooting an open three.

He did finally pull up for one, but not sure why he took that one that he dribbled into after refusing to take a spot up three.

Very nice drive and finish though. Hopefully we see some more of that - and at least this game he never got his pocket picked in the open court.

I think most of the times when G was sagged off of were in the second half, when we had a 15-20 point lead, plus were racking up fouls at an unbelievable rate. JB had likely told everyone to take the air out of the ball and not drive/shoot until there were 10 seconds or less on the shot clock, and G was just following orders. Smart move to limit the number of IU's possessions, when every. single. one was resulting in a foul on an SU player.

His sucking was a misconception. He struggled to shoot and couldn't make shots but he was in a position where he had to shoot when he was in there or sit again very shortly. His floor game was pretty good last year and he defended well.

Probably true of almost all of the players that come in here and don't meet our inflated expectations as freshman. Our fanbase tends to be a tad impatient. Another reason not to give up on DCII just yet, follow your coaching staff's lead.

As much as I loved his threes last night and was amazed by the extremely loooong one, it was the emphatic two-hand dunk that made me shout aloud and wake up the dog.

from the New York Times article:

Boeheim smirked Tuesday when asked if Cooney had any sort of shooting revelation. “He’s always shot the ball well,” Boeheim said. “It’s just hard to shoot from the bench.”

Cooney is a very well rounded player. He is a lights out 3 point shooter, has a decent floor game and plays great defense. He's only going to get better and the thing that really impresses me is his conditioning. Playing the hounding defense that he does all the while running off staggered screens all over the place requires some serious stamina.

Our Strength and Conditioning program is incredible. Our team's routinely look like NBA teams physically and that's not just because of who we recruit. (Although that does play a big part) There are plenty of other teams that recruit super athletic guys that don't look like us.

NO ONE, AND I MEAN NO ONE thought that he would be playing at this level 8 games into this season.

The only legit mistakes I can remember of him so far this year were the 2 bonehead to's he had on 2 consecutive possessions... which i believe ultimately led to a barrage of 3's.

I love that I didnt see this coming.

Yes he does!

Kid is showing a lot more versatility beyond just the shooting, as well. He's handling the ball better both in the open floor and in half court sets. He's playing aggressive defense. And he's showing toughness.

Exactly! If you try to go Cooney hunting, he'll blow right by you to the basket. Onions!

This is a great post. I loved JS. But I think the biggest reason the offense has been better this year than last (at least pre-NCAAs) is that Cooney is much better than Southerland. As you point out, both teams depended a lot on one guy to carry most of the load from 3-point range (though I expect Fair and Ennis to be real threats at some point this year, just as Fair and Triche were last year). And Southerland was capable of getting really hot. But he was such a one-dimensional player that if he wasn't on fire, he couldn't bring much. And he could be defended - I have no way of proving this but I'd bet Cooney is taking shots while defended much more often than Southerland, who hit a huge portion of his 3s off dishes from MCW or in transition.

Cooney will come to earth eventually. But I'm not sure it'll matter much - teams aren't going to let him shoot, and he's going to make them pay even if he's not shooting at such a ridiculous pace.

For the reasons you stated, I've always had a hard time classifying James in the same category as our other main 3-point threats in the past. Yes, he had an outstanding 3-point FG % as a senior, but for the things you mentioned, he wasn't quite as potent as many of the previous snipers, despite many of them having slightly lower FG % numbers. It looks like we finally have a big-time 3-point specialist after going four seasons without one and I absolutely LOVE it!

What about Cooney's courage and moxie?!? What about nearly getting his head knocked off and then continuing to play for how many more minutes? The Legend of the Coon was born tonight, my friends.
The Coon eats shaky potatoes for breakfast!

One of my favorite moments of the game last night came right after the intentional foul. Cooney rose up, shook it off, and huddled up his teammates. The cameras got a great shot of him leading the huddle and pumping up his team for the final stretch. Awesome leadership.

And speaking of leadership, this team oozes it. Between CJ, Cooney, Ennis, and Keita...what a great group of guys to keep everyone together. I really get the feeling that it will be leadership by committee, and to me, that's a good thing.

Great quote by Crean when discussing Indiana's offensive woes in the 2nd half from outside and why they should have gone inside more.

"We don't have a Trevor Cooney".

I was wrong on TC. Real wrong. I live in Delaware and didn't think that he was even the best player on his HS team. I questioned both the scholy and his subsequent potential.

Here he is, a legit key contributor to a top program.

I'm officially suspending myself from second guessing until...at least my next post.

Who on his team did you think was better and do you know where he is now?

On the play where Cooney stole the ball, gave it up to Ennis and hustled to the corner - who else saw the end result about 5 seconds before Cooney drained the 3? What a sweet play!

I miss Devo. I know half this board loves him and half hates him but man, he was fun to watch.
He was one of my all-time faves …. even though it didn't count, that shot at the buzzer and leap onto the scorer's table in the Garden in the six overtime game against UConn was one of my favorite 'Cuse hoops moments evah!

His name is Deon Jones. Ended up at Towson. 6-5 G/F. Was a junior when TC was a senior.

For the uninitiated, there is a significant boarding school component to Sanford. Some of its most notable players were not from Delaware.

Walter Davis, who went on to great success at North Carolina and the NBA, is probably the best-known Sanford athletic alum. Sanford's a really good school, in no way a diploma mill.
