I have been to some hostile and noisey venues in my life, but Gampel tonight won the prize.

My friend, his grandson and I arrived a early (around 7:30) because they had never been there and wanted to see it. So we walked around the inside of the arena a bit. When we walked in front of the smaller of two student sections (the one behind the UConn basket), the students there unleashed an unprintable torrent of expletives at us because we were wearing orange. My friend's young grandson was literally frightened by them. They were that vicious and obscene.

During the 30 minutes before the "Game Day" telecast began, the students in the larger student section (the one behind the SU basket) were led through a rehearsal of their cheers by someone on the PA system. It was all choreographed. They were told what to do at each time out throughout the game. And they practiced it. I had never seen that before. And ESPN iikes Game Day in small on-campus venues because of the spontaneous student enthusiasm. I hope they noticed.

A guy two rows behind us screamed expletives at JB all game long. At one point, security told him that he would be asked to leave if he kept it up. He kept it up, and they never came back. (Really pleasant environment. It was all we heard in our ears all game long).

And now the worse part: the students behind the SU basket. In the second half, when UConn made its sustained charge, they made more noise than I have ever heard at a basketball game. And they really tormented the SU players when they attempted free throws or any other shots in the second half. They were so loud during timeouts (the choreographed cheers) that we wondered whether the players could hear anything JB was saying to them. We couldn't hear each other.

I was sitting near someone who has been at many more game at many more venues than I have, and I asked him whether he had ever been in such a hostile environment. He said he could not think of one.

Unless UConn follows us to the ACC, this will probably be out last game ever at Gampel. I for one will not be unhappy.

PS, at the end of the game, someone collected all the signs used by the students in the student section. They had not been spontaneous signs made by students. They were produced by the school and distributed to the students. (Even the big heads).

I CANNOT HEAR YOU JOYCE BUT I AM GLAD YOU MADE IT BACK SAFE AND SOUND

Zak, it was great to chat with you pre-game. You are so nice compared to the folks we were forced to listen to during the rest of the evening. How did you ever wind up at UConn? :)

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH I CANT HEAR ANYTHING STILL PLEASE SPEAK LOUDER :)

Personally I love extremely loud crowds but not yelling obscenities and what not at other fans and the other teams coaches. I wonder how much JB hears the fools yelling at him and if it affects him at all since he said he's sensitive. If it does then it just adds on to how great of a coach he is.

Sensitive I think is a relative term. JB gets a detailed job performance appraisal blasted out daily by all kinds of writers, radio people, and TV analysts to a nationwide audience. This to say nothing of the criticism of hacks on the internet and in bars, coffee shops, at water coolers, etc. On top of that, he is within close range of fans yelling negative, obscene stuff at him on a regular basis. When he is not doing this, he's being sued for defamation. Most people wouldn't last 2 weeks under that kind of barrage.

Joyce, at least basketball is more a visual entertainment...you brought home a well deserved victory...even though team almost gave it back in 2nd half.
Welcome Home!

As an old Manley Zoo member, I can respect obnoxious and intimidating student sections as long as it is directed at the other team. Trying to be a jerk with opposing fans who have kids is pathetic however.

Didn't see much Orange on TV although there were a few decent shots of you, Joyce. At one point there was a pretty good close up, in fact...or about as close as it gets on TV. My wife and I simultaneously said "there's Joyce!"

And Joyce...you got some good face time on ESPN last night right behind Coach. Nice!

I really enjoy your insightful posts and am glad you were on hand to lend your support to the team. Attending a game in that environment must be only slightly more enjoyable than having a root canal without anethesia. I guess what makes it all worthwhile is to leave Gampel with the knowledge that we have swept them in a 2 game season series for the first time since '96-'97! I'm sure you must have encountered many a gracious UCONN fan after the game ;)

Joyce gets more face time on TV than Chuck Schumer! Even my kids preempt me now with- "I know, Daddy, that's the nice lady you know that you and Jack got tickets from". Joyce, the good news is my oldest daughter asked me, "when will that girl ever graduate from college and go get a job?". If she only knew!

The game "sounded" loud and noticeably absent were chants of "Scooooop" and "Let's Go Orange". It's sad and lame that the fans were so crude and rude to "civilians", especially kids, and it's really pathetic- I think Joyce has been a good supporter of their program. Oops. Regardless, their crowd combined with our poor shooting made for a close and interesting game.

My guess is that their athletic department made the organized Soviet-style slogan push in order to (A) get some home cookin' going for a much needed win and (B) impress any decision makers from real conferences who might have been watching the game. I wonder if the B1G would make PSU a school for all sports except hoops and UConn a member for hoops only. :D

Glad you made it out alive. Usually the programs that have had the most success have the most secure fans, people who are relatively nice to fans of the opposition, friendly and accomodating. Despite UConn's great success on the court, UConn fans (as a whole, there are certainly exceptions) have not been able to match the excellence of their basketball team. To me, UConn is the West Virginia of New England and Storrs is a uglier version of Morgantown.

When Calhoun retires, Lamb and Drummond turn pro, they aren't able to go to the NCAA Tournament for violations, and UCONN is playing SMU on a Tuesday night in front of a few hundred people on ESPN3...I am sure the atmosphere will be much different! :D

The yelling of vulgarity's, while not right and poor taste, I won't hold against them. Been to the dome numerous times where in the fist half where "beer sales" are strong under the teflon roof I have seen many of SU fans do the same. Maybe not where you sit down close, but in other areas of the dome in the 100 level that stuff takes place. Nothing new.. I know ESPN once had set up the fans rushing the court at the Dome about 10 years ago after a win. I think during the Jason Hart days, it might have been a win over UCONN. Not sure what game exactly, so I know ESPN does sorta "set stuff up" pro wrestling style at times. I heard one of their ex-employees talk about it and use that game specifically as a reference of when they did it. They probably like the fact the school tells fans how to act to make better TV. Hell they might have been behind it. I am not defending any of this stuff or saying any of it is right, but I understand how all this stuff goes down and how ESPN operates.

I would guess that the university made the signs because they knew the signs students made would have been inappropriate. I was a little shocked we didn't see a Bernie big head, now I know why we didn't.

My wife and I were thinking of getting tickets. I'm glad we didn't now if the fans were that bad. I will not miss playing UConn solely because of their fans. I've never been to any other place where I was threaten to get beat up over and over again for just wearing orange like my family and I were a few years ago at a UConn football game. Worst fans I've ever seen.

CTO I am sorry you had to put up with that nonsense. In the past you've wondered why some of us were not enthused about rooting for our fellow BE member UConn. Now you have a better understanding as to why. I've witnessed some of the same nonsense at MSG. That said, I know we have our own set of knuckleheads. It really is crazy how it has become acceptable for some fans to act the way they do.

It is hugely funny ... our fans get sooooo much criticism whereever we go. But I thnk that it was after the Providence game in in Rhode Island that the fans were saying that our traveling flock was the worst ... with the exception of the UConn fans. And what is it with the white-outs btw. I have always been curious about that ... what is it supposed to signify anyway? Lville and now UConn?

Glad you made it out alive and home safely. Can't believe you are posting at 2 am however. You must have been pretty wired.

Hurling obscenities at two people with who had a young kid with them?

You stay classy, UConn.

Glad you made it back safely. To echo Dick, as a former member of the Manley zoo, props to the UConn fans for being loud. Obscenities at kids...not so much.

Really hope they don't follow us to the ACC.

SU does "orange outs" which is just as goofy. Lets be fair

At least orange is a color. I think white outs started with hockey and the shirts matched the ice.

I might be wrong, but SU was doing it before it was a "thing". Louisville I can understand doing white however. Can't imagine Pitino is a red tux.

actually no it started in the NBA. The whole "WHITE PARTY" thing was big in major city's among celebrities and teams in these city's started doing white outs for games. Then it caught on. SU with Orange and other schools with other colors. SU didn't start this trend by any means. They are just one school in the pack that caught on.

Joyce and the other 100+ SU fans should have rushed the court. Now That would have been funny!
