Horse Racing 2025

anyone going to the Saratoga 4 day session next weekend? before the season offically starts the next week?

Anyone go yesterday? I'm going on the 11th but am interested how this weekend meet goes attendance wise.

I went today. never seen it so quiet. never a line to bet and bathroom was empty everytime. all the free sunglasses one could want. I was told Thursday was a ghost town

Heard the same from family that was there. They announced 16,000 I think.

Wait until today when they're running a card that belongs at Aqueduct in February.
We will see how the handle is. It was probably the most perfect 4th of July weather weekend, so you can't argue with the lack of fans in attendance.

And the traffic heading South on the Northway is already bumper to bumper, so the Adirondacks must have been packed.

People will still bet this mediocre card if it's run at Saratoga. No excuse for not running a stakes race or two today, though. I realize most people don't care or know the difference, but this is Saratoga and NYRA needs to be careful to not keep watering down their product.

From what I read handle was up 150% over the same weekend at Aquaduct last year,
Big handle for a temporary 4 days of racing. It was a good call but obviously running the Belmont at Saratoga as well as the 4th of July festival takes away from the actual opening day of Saratoga on Thursday. Not much you can do in that area until the new Belmont is done. Certainly not an ideal situation but only another year of it until things get back to normal. Not much you can do.

I love Saratoga but I wasn't going to give up what is basically a 4 day weekend to attend the races

It was enjoyable to get around town and it not be packed though.

Got a day trip up to lake George in. Nice drive up to Bolton Landing as well

Enjoyed the fireworks from the top of the Tavern

Saw some of the Road race on the 4th on Broadway

Had a nice meal at Wheatfields, Boca, and Druthers

Family came and got to do some things walking around the shops

Got stocked up on free sun glasses on give away day

$1 hot dogs both days as well.

They had Caroline blocked off for concerts in the evening before the fireworks

Too bad Gafneys got shut down, That used to be a hopping place.

Darling Donuts was really good as well

Best part was the VRBO pricing was about half since I think many did not realize it was a thing

Nice to catch a break on the VRBO rental.. Belmont weekend certainly was not the case in this area. Looking forward to the actual meet starting. Some nice 2 year olds last weekend. Late pick 5 on Sunday paid well, had 4 of 5 missed on the 8th, had the 2nd and 3rd place finishers there. Paid 35k on a $1.

Everybody likes a nice card with graded stakes etc but with the handle being what it was there was solid opportunities. Hit a pick 3 for about $1,200 on Friday, gave about $700 back Saturday /Sunday but took some shots so worth it.

Speaking of jockeys, anyone else notice how deep the jockey colony is so far at Saratoga this first week. Guys like Velasquez, Castellano, Rosario, are getting fewer rides.

It's always the deepest room anywhere, but this year is ridiculous. These riders are hungry, too, with top guys like Irad riding 8 or 9 races a day. A bunch of them, including Irad, have mounts at Finger Lakes tomorrow on the New York Derby day card.

Looks like Irad has just the one mount. I guess its worth it to ride in a $150K stakes race. Like Mike Smith flying east to ride once or twice on a weekend.

It says something when someone like Irad would give up an off day to ride in that race when maiden races at Saratoga go $100K now.

Irad won his $150K race today and also picked up a 2nd mount and finished 2nd in a $26.5K allowance race. So, that probably help pay his valet and manager fees and his gas and tolls on the NYS Thruway. I doubt he eats much, but maybe a chicken salad at Chik-fil-A.

I love Rispoli on turf, but they have to get him off Journalism. He’s repeatedly putting him in awful spots

100% been saying this since the derby. Great turf rider, mediocre dirt.

Surprised nobody mentioned the run by Scottish Lassie on Saturday in the American Oaks. Great ride by Rosario as well. Kind of reminded me of his ride on Frosted in the Met Mile from 8-9 years ago.

Interesting how slow has started at Saratoga since the real meet got underway, won't last long but he's been ice cold
