Houston #1

Remember the grand old days when we used to score a few points a game...

1965-66 99.0 ppg (WOW!! Wish I had seen that) Lost in Regional Final
1971-72 87.4 ppg
1976-77 86.9 ppg
1977-78 87.8 ppg
1978-79 88.7 ppg
1988-89 89.7 ppg

We haven't been over 80 in nearly 15 years, and above 75 only 4 times in those last 15 years... And those years were all in the pre-shot clock era, I think.
Made a similar comment in another thread.
I was a student from 1980-1984 and remember free fries at Burger King on M-Street when SU scored 100 points and it actually happening more than once.
How is it with the shot clock and 3 pt shot which were supposed to increase the pace of the game and increase scoring, 100 pt games very rarely (if ever) happen anymore and the average points per game is less now than 40 years ago.
Has the game become more defense oriented? Is it the refs allowing more "hard" D than back in the day?
Is the talent spread too thin among too many D1 programs?
Too many players launching low percentage 3 pt shots instead of higher percentage 2 pt shots resulting in more empty trips on offense?

Thinking back it's crazy to me that between 1986 and 1994 the shot clock was 45 seconds. I know it was better than no shot clock at all, but holy smokes that's an eternity.

I don’t miss watching Dean Smith’s UNC teams “four corners offense”, which was basically a five minute passing drill while they tried to run out the clock. I think they went with 45 seconds because people were concerned the shot clock would alter the “strategy” of stall ball to win games too much.

phill ford . almost single-handedly rewrote the rules .

And as a reminder, as little as SU needed it back in the day, the shot clock is a Syracuse "Invention".

Thank you Danny Biasone......
