Curious what Houston fans really thought about Syracuse last night

I’ve been reading our fan board, and some of the opinions about Syracuse seem filtered through our orange-colored glasses... and a lot of the opposite. As one poster put it: “I bet some of you exhaled and lit a cigar when Syracuse lost just so you could be right.” I get the "I'm not a morale victory" guy but there's a lot to take from last night.

So I wanted to see what Houston fans had to say. Keep in mind, in the last 8 years Houston is 243-44, averaging 30-6 per season, with a National Championship appearance, 2 Final Fours, 6 conference championships, and 6 Sweet 16s. These are fans who know basketball.

Here are the quotes that struck me the most:
  • “Syracuse plays too fast for some of our guys”
  • “Syracuse has caught the nation’s attention”
  • “Our FT defense is elite” 🤣
  • “They’re forcing us to take really bad shots”
  • “Our guys need to slow down. Syracuse has them playing out of control”
  • “Syracuse will be a tournament team”
  • “Anyone calling this a stunner hasn’t been paying attention. Syracuse is good”
  • “This is easily a top 25 team”
  • “The winner of this game will be in the championship game”
  • “Yeah. That team is a PROBLEM in March”
And a few others that stood out early in the game:
  • “Syracuse D is really stout”
  • “They’re taking it to us”
  • “They are so quick and much better than we thought”
  • “And they’re without their top scorer?”

It’s interesting to see how respected Syracuse is from an outside perspective, even by a program with Houston’s recent resume.

We played really really well, almost the entire game. Like I mentioned in another thread, if Red wants to be our long term coach we have to play like that and that intensely every single game. We have depth and length to demand that, and if you dont give it go to the bench. We have no star so treat everyone the same. The team showed they can do it so it is on Red to get it out of them every game and demand that is the level of play we should expect from every player.

If we play like that every game, we will be a tournament team easily and win a good amount of games and we will smoke Kansas today.

Yes, absolutely. I candidly am a little concerned of a let down tonight after that type of energy last night. But, coming back after being down 65-54 told me all I needed to know about this group

"Our FT defense is elite."

There are so many positives to take from yesterday's game, and as you pointed out, not all Syracuse fans realize that. My biggest takeaway is that Syracuse outscored Houston 11-0 in the last three minutes of regulation against a program that's been a one seed, I believe, the last three seasons.

We all hope that Cuse comes out strong today, and hopefully our coaches, and all the support staff, including their own families, have picked the players up from any disappointment they might have.

I was looking forward to yesterday's game, but now based on how that ended, I am more looking forward to seeing todays game. I think the Orange are going to treat the Jayhawks how a bird should be treated during feast week

We have been super aggressive and Kansas has to lean heavily on Bidunga staying in the game with Peterson out. Gotta have a killer mentality and just go get it.

Houston was a totally different team with Tugler out of the game. Kansas has the two big guys, Bidunga and Tiller, but I don't think they are as strong defensively as Houston with Bidunga. Cuse just has to be careful covering those two. Kyle is obviously an important guy not to get in foul trouble. That's where not having Donnie could have an impact.

Agreed and in the same breath using Soaure and Sadiq up front is less of a drop off and Sadiq may be a problem for their other big who is a stretch big but a bit slower.

Yes, I was thinking the same about Sadiq. Need to find ways to get him into the seams.

The lob to Kyle might get all the Kansas bigs sitting on the bench early. White should be able to catch a few.

I think attacking off those screens in general will be a problem for Kansas. I almost wouldn’t be surprised to see them try and throw a zone at us.

SU's defense was really good...good enough to beat anyone, imo

the offensive scheme (or lack thereof) is just plain bad. what are they even trying to do on offense???!

I thought SU PG George was overwhelmed and totally lost out there with 6 turnovers, despite a few bright moments. He slowed the offense down considerably which only exacerbated the problems because that just meant they usually had to force a shot with little time on the clock.

The Orange took so many bad shots and camped out at the 3pt line all game, only shooting 25% from there, playing right into houstons hands. Houston swarms to the ball and gets a ton of weakside blocks...but every time the Orange got the ball in the middle and passed to the wing or even just made that one extra pass...they usually got a wide open shot. In all honesty, SU shouldve won comfortably with just mediocre shooting percentages (from the field and the line) and a bit more composure on offense.

Houston deserved to lose that game but their opponent didnt know how to win.

Surprised by the amount of praise. That's great. I would have guessed they would treat the win like we did beating Monmouth.

That response is the type of person the quote is responding to lol. The team you're a fan of laid an egg and you couldn't wait to come here and post that. Odd
Haha just saw the thread when I replied. Appreciate the praise. Team is better. Some clear flaws that will 100% prevent some wins.

Houston will make the championship though now, I should hammer a future.

We collectively need therapy; some of us are reading fan boards of good teams for atta boys. At some point it’s just easier to try to enact change. Still, whatever gets everyone through the day. I’m not one to judge.

Luckily I am already in therapy
