Houston Bowl Travel Info

Air:

Two airports: IAH Bush has all the majors and is the international hub. It is probably 30 mins to the stadium
HOU Hobby is the Southwest Hub and about 20 mins from the stadium

The area around the stadium is okay...but nothing special...but motels are plentiful and cheaper than the Galleria Area nearby. The Galleria has the shopping and is trendy. Reliant Stadium is located SW of Downtown.

Airport options: DFW 4 hrs, SAT 2.5 hrs, AUS 2 hrs I recommend if you can afford the time to take a few extra days and see the Alamo, eat some BBQ, Galveston, 6th Street, etc...

If we get this game...expect a 4-5 hours long tailgate.

Mark, may and my guests attend the tailgate? Is there a particular section where we are sitting or shoud I just find my own tix?

The tailgate will be open for all posters and lurkers...we'll get it organized over the next 10 days or so.

For tickets...it is everyman for himself...but I'm hoping Cuse will set aside a block of 150 tickets for Syracusefan.com folks to buy from.

I envision a special link and code word to put in to purchase.

Ok things are coming together...a couple updates. The most expensive ticket from the Syracusefan.com ticket link includes club access.

I'm staying at the LaQuinta on Speedway. Intel on it told me it isn't a real good LaQuinta...if your wife is picky I suggest looking downtown or in the Galleria area. If you get a motel/hotel near the (Metro) light rail downtown you can actually take a train to the stadium (Reliant Park).

Map updated to show correct rail lines.

Mark, that map is of the existing (From UH Downtown to Fannin South) rail line AND the future lines (everything else). There are no current lines going east or west or in the Galleria.

Be careful about any of the hotels on the south side of 610 (close to the stadium). Area is very sketchy. Downtown has quite a few nice hotels including a Four Seasons, but they will be pricy.

Make sure to avoid the Slauson Cutoff.

Great reference! How soon we forget:

Who'd want to cut off their Slauson?

Thanks updated the link with a better map...you know any good rail stops that would have nice hotels?

Info from KingOtto I wanted to pass along

Here is some hotel info to pass on. Per the link below the SU hotel is the Hyatt Regency. Normal rate for the hotel is $159 a night. However if you use the link from the Texas Bowl site below and say an attendee of the game you get the room for $120 a night. It is a good discount. Since you use the link they will know you are there for the game and help SU's stats. I am sure Anthony Travel will offer packages for this hotel soon but from experience they always charge double what it actually costs so they can make money. I am all for supporting SU but I am not for supporting Anthony Travel. They offer very little value added and just take advantage of SU fans. I wish SU would stop using them.

Market Street Square is probably the best and is walking distance to a Courtyard by Marriott, Four Seasons and a few others. It is in the heart of downtown Houston (and kitty corner to the building I work at). Most of the other stops have nothing around them and the ones in the Medical Center/Museum District just have hospitals and museums/zoos next to them.

You need to act fast...get your air travel/motel figured out...game tickets are your last worry. For cost too many variables...use kayak.com and seach multiple cities and multiple days. Try BUF, ROC, SYR, Binghamton and even Ithaca

If you wait on bubbas to get back with you all the decent airfares will be gone.
been on kayak searched all upstate cities, philly, ny area airports to houston , dallas , baton rouge, New Orleans, Best I could find was in the high 300s round trip. When I thought we might be in Dallas New Years Day I found a spirit airlines flight from Philly to Dallas or 188 round trip......but nothin close to that around the 26th trough the 29th.

It is a tough one. I have had some success using Priceline for hotels but have never tried using it for flights. I wonder if that might strike gold for you? Anyone have any success using Priceline for flights?

Not going to the game unless a benefactor mails me like $700 in the next few weeks, but was looking at flights up state for S's and G's earlier. Binghamton is about $100 cheaper round trip than Cuse/Albany/Rochester (looked for 12/26 and 12/28 return).

If anyone finds any relatively "cheap" flight prices for the game from Syracuse, Rochester, or Buffalo; please alert me! I really want to make the game but can't justify paying 600 dollars for a flight!

Thanks!

My son did name your own price and flew from Dallas to Albany for XMas...but he had a Jan 4th return to help. I'd try name your own price for $100 under the cheapest flight...see what happens. Share your info here.

We booked today for about $550 round trip/ticket. The bowl worked well for us because we were planning to visit family in Mission, Texas in February and we have to go through Houston to get there. So now we're going to the game and then on the 28th flying in McAllen, Texas and coming back just before midnight on New Year's Eve. We got our tickets and are sitting in the SyracuseFan section in the lower level. We're now looking for a hotel that has an airport shuttle. Any ideas? We're flying in and out of Houston International and looking for something between the airport and the stadium. Is there a specific area we should be looking at. Any info is appreciated. GO ORANGE!

Call these guys if you're in need of a shuttle. The cost will depend on how many people they have and how many stops they make. the more people, the cheaper it gets.

As for hotels, there are lots of options. You can usually find hotels in downtown Houston fairly cheap although there is not a ton of stuff to do downtown at night. A cab ride from a downtown hotel to the stadium should run you about $17-22 bucks. Some hotels may have courtesy shuttles that will be willing to drop you off and pick you up. Call them.

The stadium is in the Medical Center area of Houston where there are several very large hospitals. There are a lot of hotels in this area including a Hampton Inn, Marriot, Springhill Suites etc If you want to be close to the stadium this would be your best bet.

The other areas you might look at would be the Museum district or West Univerisity area near Rice. Both would be a short shuttle/cab ride to the stadium.

The could also take the metro bus from IAH to downtown then jump on the train.

Just did a check Southwest from Rochester to Hobby (Houston) Leave Late Christmas Afternoon and return Monday Morning for $453. You would have a couple days to actually visit Galveston, Austin or San Antonio.

With Southwest drop 70 bucks from the price with no baggage add on ...still not low enough for me.

You can fly from Rochester to San Antonio at 5:45 PM Christmas Day and fly back 4:12 PM from Austin to Rochester Tuesday 12/31 for $364.

Or you could fly from Buffalo into New Orleans on Christmas at 4:37 PM and return to Rochester at 6:15 PM Tuesday December 31st for $324. Houston is about a 5 hour drive from New Orleans.

Or Rochester to NO Christmas at 4:37 PM, NO to Elmira on Saturday 12/28 for $312. Doesn't give you a lot of time in Texas but you save some cash...

Used Orbitz for all these deals.

Anyone flying to SanAntonio...let me know. I can tell you what you need to know about getting in and out of there...rental cars are usually pretty cheap.
