How can we beat Texas

Entire team elevates their game defensively.

JJ plays lights out again.

Bell has one of those nights shooting, where he's dialed in.

They don't have anyone who can defend Lampkin in the post, and he gets a bunch of assists again to boot.

Carlos rights the ship.

Bell needs to be on from three

Lampkin needs to continue to be a distributer

We need bench production specifically from Davis and from Taylor

We need to find a way to limit Tre Johnson. We don't have anyone that can actually guard him, but we need to find a way to limit his scoring. Autry cannot be afraid to use a zone if we need it. We don't have the man to man defenders to run it all game against a guard thats as good as Tre Johnson.

JJ needs to be dominant again

We need to move on at point guard and go back to two combo guards. I think that's JJ and Taylor/Moore.

Next, we need to get Eddie the ball down low as much as possible. His unorthodox but effective offense really breaks down the opponent's defense.

Bell is becoming more well-rounded. He needs to hit shots like he did much of last year.

And finally, the defense has to be different in every way. My personal opinion is that man-to-man is hopeless with this team. So, I would switch up the scheme. We retained and recruited a bunch of poor defenders and then expected them to be a good man-to-man defense collectively.

After that exciting win yesterday, I kind of wonder if that is going to be one of those games that's a turning point in our season.

Not to imply that a double OT victory over Youngstown State is a big deal, but I think we saw some things snap into place [amidst the bad of poor defense]. Namely, JJ emerged as our "best" player, the guy that the offense can be structured around, and Lampkin showed what a load he can be -- as a rebounder, as an inside scorer, and as a distributor. And Freeman beginning to show his talent.

Now... there's a lot of work still left to do. But maybe we saw on Saturday was the "start" of the team beginning to get their sea legs.

But this reminds me a little bit of 2015-2016 -- Michael Gbinije's senior year. We looked lousy the first couple of games, to the point where I worried that we just weren't that good. And then we go down to Atlantis around the Thanksgiving timeframe and played a couple of good teams, and suddenly the team's level of play jumped. We ended up getting a pair of wins against UConn and Texas A&M, and then were a better squad [despite the ups and downs of the regular season, and eventually being on the bubble before we went on a F4 run].

I'm not suggesting we'll be that good, or have similar success -- just that I'm hoping that this team has an extra gear that we haven't seen yet. We have some good pieces -- we really do -- but so far the flaws have outshined the good. Need that to change.

Besides defense the 3 pt line is still a major key. We should be making 9 or 10 game on average with how this team is constructed. That puts us + 10 vs Colgate, + 17 vs Youngstown (in regulation) and + 20 vs Lemoyne.

I went back and looked and we aren’t getting offensive rebounds off 3 pt misses very often and when we do the conversion on the second chance is rare.

Additionally - teams are breaking off 3pt misses at way too high of a clip thus those misses hurting us both ways( I didn’t include the opponent scores in the above +\- but you could argue that the half court possessions would result in lower conversion rates even with our weak defense.

There needs to be a balance of finding defensive lineups that can score to increase leads or decrease deficits and of course more efficient shooting when the matchups hand us a gift.

I know that the consensus is Bell will find his shot but I do wonder if the focus on other things is too much for him and he’s out of sync with his shot and his footwork. That’s not an excuse but to me is more of a clue maybe he has to be a 6th/7th man vs a starter.

15-16 is an interesting comparison given we did really struggle out of the gate. Defensively we were pretty solid compared to this year albeit those were the zone days and I realize this isn’t a 1:1.

I still think that could be a tool for Red this year with so much size. Even just as a change up to get a few possessions that can create some dry spells for the opponent and give the offense a chance to have a few runs.

Shoot better than 22.7% from the line, 5-22 from 3, and play active, fast paced BB the entire game.

For some reason, I thought the kid from Brooklyn, ( Carlos ), was better than the board describes his play. Very good distributing/ assts/ but had no O.

I have not been able to watch any games so I don't really know how this team plays - only what I read from the description from SU Athletics and the box score and threads.

Can anyone provide me with a short evaluation on Carlos?

I expected him at a minimum to be able to get into the paint to direct the offense and on defense make the opposing point guard’s job difficult. He hasn’t done any of that yet. The fact that he’s not much of a scorer and he missed 2 big free throws on Sat makes everything worse.

We play surprisingly good defense, shoot a good % from 3, 2&FT, outrebound, Bell plays very well, Carlos surprises, JJ continues Yst performance, Choppa brings a scoring and Def spark, Davis big boys, Taylor calms down and plays a role, Freeman progresses solidly, We look organized on Off and run some nice plays, we switch it up on Def and cause TOs, Cuffe plays & provides a steal or 2, maybe a few pts-he was the standout performer at the 1 practice i saw and it wasnt close, Eddie gets a triple double, Naheem plays a few and provides rim protection and finally Petar comes in like a goon and gets a bloody nose, broken tooth, rebs and Def.
If just that stuff happens we win, Im sure of it.

I am also fairly confident it happens.

He looks a little slow, tends to lose his guy on def and fouls, just mediocre doing everything, maybe he can improve and be what we hoped. I feel he will at least improve a decent amount but probably not what we hoped for.
He does have a good asst/to ratio.

reading this thread you would think texas is the larry bird celtics...lol

theyre not that good, guys...

i mean i get it...the orange defense has been a trainwreck...but texas doesnt actually seem all that great

its not going to take a miracle or anything

Why not give us some specifics then? Clearly they are better than Youngstown St, what will we need to do differently

i mean im not necessaril predictng a SU win (because the defense seems unablee to stop anyone)

but

looking at the box score - texas only had 3 players that got double figures vs ohio state in their loss to them...thye dont seem to have a particularly high scoring squad

one of them is a big man. eddie does well guarding bigs usually, it seems

their guard is good and will be a defensive key. but thts only 1 player. hopefully jj cancels him out.

the orange havent shot the 3 well at all...if they do and play decent defense...they likely win

idk...p5teams usually ply other p5 teams close...a close game wouldnt surprise me at all...despite how bad su has looked on defense in the first 3 games

Let's be realistic in this thread and try not to be mean...

- Bell goes off early and often, opens up room for JJ and Lampkin to maneuver
- Freeman and Moore play a bunch of mins and play complete games
- Red figured out some defensive scheme to hide our deficiencies
- McLeod steals 5-10 mins and blocks a couple of shots and grabs some rebounds

Anything else?

All those are good. Ohio State beat them by leading wire to wire. They

held Texas to 37% shooting at 25% from three - doubtful we can do this

Ohio State shot 50% from three (14-28) and 86% from the free throw line - not sure we can do either but will need to get close

Ohio State out rebounded Texas by two. We will need to compete on the boards and win the battle for extra possessions since our defense is so suspect. I think we can win the board battle.

Limited the damage from other players with exception of Tre Johnson (29 points). Can’t let Kaluma go off inside and have a big game. Same for Shedrick. I worry about our ability to stop Kaluma.

Most importantly Autry needs to get these guys ready from the jump. He needs to keep game momentum, make the correct lineup and subbing patterns and adjustments as needed.

I would like to see a few minutes of zone because I don’t think Texas is a lights out shooting team and it may hide some of our defensive problems. Or at least take the opponent a minute to figure out a different defense we are poor at.

Cuse!

I'm thinking that JB has spent some of his retirement learning how to use hypnosis to program zone defense into the brains of basketball players. Texas will be his proof of concept. SU will come out with a tough zone defense throwing off Texas' groove and inspiring SU's players to shoot lights out, taking a 10 point lead into the last 5 minutes. That's all I see for now...

If Bell is scorching hot, we limit turnovers, and go hard on the glass we can win.

Our defense will not win us the game. We have to excel in the other areas.

Just watching NC St up by 18 over Colgate at the half. I’m taking Texas and the points.

I was hoping that Colgate was better than expected, but they are not. Granted they missed a bunch of open 3s.

Out team is efficient scoring but it’s not a fast break team and is burned by pushing the ball up the court against us. We need to make shots, shoot 50% from the floor and hit our free throws.

Not certain that will be enough against Texas, but we need that the rest of our season

(Still taking Texas and the points on Thursday)LOL

GO CUSE

Edit. Colgate has had their top two scorers (cox who tore us up and their center injured in mid 1st half) out most of the half. Once again not certain what is the truth. Not sure I could handle the truth either.

Sounds like huge losses for Colgate. May be a tough game to look at, but, I hats we even have to look at this.

Just finished a rewatch of the Youngstown game, just so many whistles, same with Lemoyne. You don’t really see them in the condensed game just how much stoppage and how we never got a rhythm.

Fun fact our last 3 opponents outfouled us by 29. Thats 29 more whistles blown on them than us and that’s with a few swallowed whistles.

On those 29 more fouls we only outscored these last 3 teams by 3 points total from the line. So on average 10 more fouls on them per game and we scored 1 point more from the line. Thats just insanity, Thats gotta be a record.

Just saying if we make free throws and get some 3’s to drop this offense should be able to cover for the defense until it falls in line.

Go inside to Eddie. He has a 50 pound advantage.
Give JJ the Rock at point and let him create.
Play Choppa at the 2
If Bell is hitting let him roll. If he's cold play Taylor or Davis.
Don't substitute as much.

The first 2 offensive sets, Eddie at the high post sets a screen for Bell to cut off and shoot. He hits those and he's off to the race's. Then you would see the Bell I'm hoping to see. The guy who can score 25, get 5 or 6 rebounds, get 3 or 4 assists, and play good defense.
The talent is there, if he gets his head straight, he can be good.

Texas is averaging more than 20 three point attempts a game so far, at a 38% success rate.

What qualifies as a "lights out" shooting team, if they don't?
