How does TD improve?

The quick no huddle offense may or not be the key to success on offense but then again what is our offensive plan?
That's an easy one. Run the ball up the middle, throw it to the sidelines.

TD has tons of potential but he had issues with pocket awareness and avoiding a rush. I understand that the rush was at times on him before he caught the snap, not much he can do there.

But there were many plays where he had some time, and wasn’t able to feel the pressure and get away and extend the play. He got better as the year went on, but still below average imo.

The question is what can be done to improve this? My thoughts:

1) more quick throws called by the oc
2) a better running game will help too

The real question is what training does TD do over the next 8 months? Are there virtual reality goggles for training aids? Are there drills he can do on the field? Film study must be a part too, right?
Do you know a QB with this problem who has improved significantly over time? I’m looking for a reason to be optimistic here. We need TD to be solid next year.

I think he needs help in the film room picking up his secondary guys.

Tommy can improve on after the first time he overthrows Taj and Taj throws a fit and shows him up on the field.
Tommy can grab him by the facemask and tell him if he ever does that again he will never look his way again.

I feel like Tommy wants to be the nice guy but he might need to be the bad guy once in a while.

Lots can be worked but he made a lot of matters worse when just continued to drop back and back and back. I mean yeah you could lose 5 yards on a sack now you just added on another 15.

Strap a VR headset to him, and simulate a defense running free through a porous o-line. Do this repeatedly until he figures out how to avoid the rush and find an open receiver. By the first game next year, with an improved o-line, the game will slow waaaaay down for him.
Half serious...thinking outside the box.

Yea that will work

I think TD is a very good QB and agree he needs to work on quicker reads along with what to do when the play breaks down due to a rush.
Out of curiosity, I wonder what his passing percentage was once he had to scramble/move his feet out of the pocket? He has nice footwork in the pocket but once things happen throwing and running seem to be a problem for him.

Experience + Practice + Time

+ a functional OL

Agree but practice with a purpose and figure out what TD is struggling with and make it at the least, not a weakness.
The OL being able to form a pocket + a running game will do wonders for him but when those things break down TD has to be able to hit another gear and figure out how to move the chains. Moving and throwing and being in tune with his receivers is huge in this regard.

Not sure that TD is to blame here. It seemed to me that DB decided to slow the pace of play because of the issues with the OL and to keep our D off the field.
Was it all the issues with the OL? Could it have been a combination of the OL issues and TD's issue with seeing the field? I think they go hand in hand.

Also the difficulty establishing the run prior to Duke game. All massive factors.

I think this is true. He def has issues with decision making under pressure and moving through his progressions when things go sideways.

The problem is the two are linked in a way that makes it really hard to place % on it. We need both to be better - but who knows how much by each

The fact that he still struggled after the OL improved bears this out. It was a combo of the 2.

I think it's reasonable to assume that there was an interaction effect between all those variables. My post should have been more specific, but, I don't think TD was the primary reason for the slower pace of play.

Rooting really hard for TD to take off next year. Hope he's focusing on his throws on the move. He's already proven he can throw it well stationary.
Agree, and it might also help if the WR's practiced scramble drills more often. They need to get open when the QB breaks. The sideline throwaways aren't all TD's fault.

Install a stop-watch in his head.

We have seen Tua from Bama struggle from the same types of things when he was pressured which wasn't often but when he was he struggled as well, moving and throwing. Is it possible the QB schools these parents pay a lot of cash for doesn't teach these things and the players become somewhat robotic?

My biggest complaint about Tommy this year was not the inability to avoid the rush and extend the play but what he did after that which was essentially...nothing. There were many times he escaped a sack and rolled right giving himself and the receivers tons of time to adjust and get open and nothing EVER happened in these situations. Definitely should be a point of emphasis for both him and the receivers going into next year.

The back to back INTs against Maryland and Clemson got in his head. Whenever he scrambled, it seemed that his first and only thought was to make sure that football ended up in the 4th row.

Needs to be fixed, in conjunction with WRs, TEs, RBs knowing how to shake their defender. More speed at those positions should help.

Pocket will be better next year but it won’t be perfect.

I’ve read that we may lose him to the NFL after next year.

So I’m guessing that he’s closer to perfection than some of us realize.

Nope, preseason, there were a bunch of board experts projecting TD to the draft after his JR year.
Apparently, the only game they watched the previous year was NC game. Must have been mowing the lawn when we played ND.

He had happy feet after the Maryland game last season and finally started trusting his OL once Bergeron came in to solidify the line. He needs that little bit of confidence that there won't be a guy in the backfield less than a second after the snap.

The thing we don't have to worry about is work ethic and I'm sure that Tommy will be watching a ton of tape and trying to work on his weaknesses all summer. I'm very excited to see what he comes back looking like in the fall.

Despite a lot of the complaints on this board, he had a great first season as a starter comparatively to some of the other guys we've had. A lot of guys make a big jump from year one to year two. He flashed in 2018 but it probably wasn't fair to expect that last season. Consistently good > occasionally great
