Those schools should never look so bad

Michigan's QB looked awful ... although Utah is a very difficult place to go in and win ... but man that kid couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat.

Texas turned into what Florida State was in Bowden's last years. Recruiting was done based on star rankings more so than going out and looking at the players. The HC was more of a figurehead and CEO and lost sight of the day to day details and the off the field crap started to show on the field. There was no real system or vision in terms of how the team was going to play. When Charlie Strong came in last year he booted like a dozen kids due to off field incidents... Basically the inmates were running the asylum. This came at a bad time for Texas as Baylor, TCU and AnM have all started recently ramping up their programs on the backs of really innovative coaches at the same time as Texas has slipped. It's kind of funny that over the past several years the best combo football/basketball program has been Baylor. Now Texas is behind the 8 ball in term of recruiting Texas and in terms of how established their coaches are in the state of Texas.

I moved to Austin this past January so it's been fun to see the ramp up to this college football season. I think most of Longhorn nation believes that Brown stayed too long and lost that edge. They believe in Strong and are ready for a several year rebuild... I think this year is going to be what it's going to be but next year the need has to point upwards or Strong is in trouble. He has a tough job because as I said before he's fighting several other programs for the top talent in Texas and he doesn't have the in state connections like those other guys have. He signed five 4* players from Florida this past year, the were called the Florida Five, and I believe all but one have already transferred home so that strategy has seemed to not worked. I give Strong a 50/50 shot of surviving... like Shafer he is all in on his young dudes this year and he will live or die by them.

Its QB play for Michigan and Texas. They just have either no talent in there (Michigan) or inexperienced QB play in (Texas).
Penn State is wasting a top 10 NFL Draft pick at QB and that is coaching.

True...and that can be said of our woes off and on over the last 15 years.

It will determine this season again.

welcome to Austin! Always nice to have another Syracuse fan in town.

Nice analysis, except there is no way Strong feels heat this year. If they don't start showing promise next year, then sure. But he's still molding the program, and Texas fans know how bad things have atrophied under Mack Brown.

Bottom line - UT hasn't had a QB since Colt McCoy left. UT passed on recruiting Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Manziel, and Nick Foles (who went to high school in Austin). As Syracuse knows all to well, it is impossible to win in college football without a QB. UT better hope Kai Locksley is the real deal, because I don't think Swoopes or Heard are gonna cut it.

Yup. Luck was definitely a kick in the nuts. He really wanted UT and they passed. Rest is history.

What is the one thing all three schools have in common. I will give you a clue, his name is Greg.
as stunned as I am to write this, Greg Robinson actually did a pretty good job as the fill in D coordinator at UT a few years ago.

I know Johnny Manziel wanted to play at Texas but Mack Brown passed. He then committed to Oregon but then they got a verbal from Marcus Mariota and he flipped to Texas A&M.

I also know Mack Brown didn't want RG III as a QB he only offered him a scholly to play DB so he went to Baylor to play QB. I never heard Andrew Luck wanted Texas but I will believe it.

Michigan has gone down because they hired Rich Rod to replace Lloyd Carr they should have run thrown the bank at Les Miles when he retired. With Harbaugh they will be back soon. He can coach even though he is a crazy.

Texas A&M coming to the SEC, which happened to coincide with the decline under Mack Brown, hurt Texas recruiting. A lot of kids in Texas want to play in the SEC now, not only for A&M but also for LSU, Bama etc. Texas used to have their pick of any kid they wanted in Texas.

Now if Texas gets good again they'll almost certainly be top dog in Texas recruiting...but for now they are in a fight trying to get the top recruits in Texas.

BTW A&M going to the SEC has also really hurt Oklahoma's ability to recruit in Texas, which is vital to their success.

Same thing that happened to us. QB play. You miss at QB, and it brings the whole program down. Just look at Texas QB's since McCoy. Look at Michigan's QB since Chad Henne. I think some of it comes down to scheme, or at least an established, successful system because at the same time Art Briles is just plugging the next QB in without missing a beat (hello Seth Russell). Even TCU before they switched to the Air Raid offense they had great college QB play with guys like Dalton, and Paschall just to name a few.

The competition is greater today than ever due to population growth. Their are so many more talented players out there to recruit. So many HS around the country have 12 month programs and skill people are so much more developed.

Also coaching has evolved with spread offenses to minimize advantages in the trenches. As proof I offer Temple vs PSU. Was there ANY doubt who had the better talent. Temple bitch slapped them.

Brown was like Pasquabaloney....a ROAD scholar. Retired On Active Duty. Both SU and UT are paying the price.

Definitely agree that Strong won't feel the heat this year but if by the end of the year there are a few more games like yesterday on the record he is going into next year on the hotseat. I don't think he billionaire boosters down here in Austin have the patience to sit through a ton of games like yesterday's and unfortunately I think the Texas offense is going to be in trouble... neither QB looks great passing the ball, they are starting two freshmen on the oline and they have a decently tough schedule. To top it off Strong is not recruiting Texas like Brown did and from what I understand he has yet to connect with the Texas high school coaches either. I don't understand how a RB like Gray who was a 5 star recruit is so mediocre.

Is Locksley the kid from Westlake they just signed? The talk radio guys seem to really like him.

The weird thing about Michigan is I watch almost every Iowa game with my Dad and Rudock fell out of favor with Iowa fans because of his tendency to go conservatively to his check down receivers too quickly to avoid taking chances that could lead to turnovers. And what does he do his first game with Michigan? Throw 3 INTS! - almost as many as he had all of last year with Iowa.

It's certainly true that UT can and will tolerate a rebuild. As I mentioned in my other post, the locals realize just how much had atrophied under Mack Brown. But while UT will tolerate losses, they don't take too kindly to humiliation. What happened at Notre Dame was humiliation. If UT suffers numerous humiliating defeats, there will be staff shake ups. Not convinced Strong goes, but I think Watson would be forced out.

Kai Locksley was the late QB flip UT snagged from FSU last year (Sam Ehrlinger is the Austin Westlake kid you're thinking of - I think he's gonna be a stud. Huge win he got last week beating Southlake Carroll). His dad is Mike Locksley, the OC from Maryland. He was billed as an exceptional athlete but a raw QB (some school were recruiting him as a WR). UT has high hopes for him as a QB and he's been getting some good press for his commitment to film work.

I'm proud of you OrangePA - this post has gone a full 9 hours without a reply defending a certain ex-coach. I think this may be unprecendented and I'm impressed. well done sir!

College football is all about the qb position, if you can't get a good qb, it doesn't matter how good your roster is.

I believe Kai was recruited as an athlete.

He was recruited as a QB at Texas. He is red shirting this year, at his request. He was listed as third string QB for the Notre Dame game.
