How is Mississippi State #1 and Florida State #3

Why does the fact that FSU plays Florida in a few weeks matter to a committee that is taking a snapshot?

And given the UM-FSU spread, the UF-FSU is probably close to pick-em, no?
Florida State-Miami is close to a pick' em because its in Miami. If FSU doesn't play angry this week they will not the rest of the year. Florida-Florida State is going to be in Tallahassee and I would figure FSU will be a TD favorite at home.
Mississippi State plays in the SEC West; they are number 1 with very good reason. Not a single team in the division has an out of conference loss.
The SEC West is a great division but the only OOC games played against decent teams were the 5 I listed. Mississippi State played nobody in OOC and Texas A&M played a soft non-conference schedule.

Alabama/Ole Miss before injuries were the best teams I thought. Mississippi State is riding beating LSU/Auburn like they are unbelievable scalps. Auburn has played a crazy schedule but their defense is not good. LSU has a young team next year we are in trouble. Arkansas is a good mediocre team, but I am just saying if the committee wanted to jump Oregon over FSU then they should have just put Oregon first as Miss State/FSU are pretty much the same.

That's fair. Oregon being ahead of FSU is a joke.

That's because they rarely play anyone worth a damn. Miss State's OOC is abysmal.

Miss State: UT-Martin, Southern Miss, South AL, UAB (No ranked)
Arkansas: Nicholls St, Texas Tech, NIU, UAB (No ranked)
Auburn: SJSU, K-State, Louisiana Tech, Samford (1 ranked)
LSU: Wisconsin, Sam Houston St, Louisiana-Monroe, NM State (1 ranked)
Bama: WVU, FAU, Southern Miss, Western Carolina (No ranked)
TXAM: Lamar, Rice, SMU, Louisiana-Monroe (No ranked)
Ole Miss: Boise, Louisiana, Memphis, Presbyterian (No ranked)

Auburn played Kansas State and LSU played Wisconsin. Who would Syracuse not beat? Boise, NIU, TTU, and WVU. That's 4 out of 25 teams that a 3-7 team likely couldn't beat.
Now let's look at the ACC Atlantic.

FSU: OK-State, Citadel, Notre Dame, Florida (1 ranked)
Clemson: Georgia, SC State, GA State, South Carolina (1 ranked)
UofL: Murray State, FIU, Notre Dame, Kentucky (1 ranked)
WF: Louisiana-Monroe, Gardner Webb, Utah State, Army (No ranked)
Cuse: Villanova, CMU, UMD, Notre Dame (1 ranked)
BC: UMass, USC, Maine, Colorado State (1 ranked)
NCSU: GA Southern, Old Dominion, USF, Presbyterian (No ranked)

FSU, UofL, and Syracuse played/will play Notre Dame. Clemson played Georgia and BC played USC.

Who would Syracuse not beat? Oklahoma State, Notre Dame, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky, Utah State, Maryland, USC, and Colorado State. That's 10 of 26 that a 3-7 team likely couldn't beat.

Mississippi State SOS 45, 2-0 vs. Top 10, 4-0 vs. Top 30
Florida State, SOS 51, 0-0 vs. Top 10, 2-0 vs. Top 30

Side note: Bama is 6-1 against the Top 30. They have WON more games vs. the Top 30 this year than any other team has PLAYED against the Top 30.
Exactly, Vegas says Bama should be #1. Makes sense. This Saturday is actually #1 vs. #2. great game.

Atlantic also has done itself no favors with losses to Akron, UMD, Colorado State and ULM. All teams that SEC West teams would beat.

Thank you. I was just about to respond with this. South Carolina was the school i meant to reference. They were preseason #8 i believe for absolutely no reason. Everyone beat them and it was treated as big wins. They were awful wins.

South Carolina has beaten Clemson (one of the flagship ACC programs) 5 years in a row now. They've also won 3 marquee bowl games in a row - a preseason top 10 ranking for them was earned.

I think it's an interesting exercise to see how they think as the season goes on, versus waiting until the end and then figuring out how they think. I mean, sure, there's a bit of ridiculousness that you're flying these people in each week and spending all this money on this closed door upscale meeting, but if you've got it you might as well spend it. And when they can create this much excitement in a college football season, they get more money to spend anyway.

Much like most seasons, this will probably work itself out. Mississippi State/Alabama, Iron Bowl, Egg Bowl, SEC Championship game. And that's just one conference. Wisconsin has been scorching, let's see if they drop Nebraska into the 2 loss group, and then do the same to Ohio State.

Oregon and Arizona State will have to play. TCU has to go into Austin, where Texas has looked a lot better the last 2 weeks. Ultimate spoiler game for them. If TCU and Baylor survive, will they be punished by the lack of a B12 title game?

FSU faces a test with each florida rival. Well, except for the Gator passing attack. But both Miami and Gator defenses will give them all they can handle. And both will really test their run D.

Should be a great ride. Looking forward to getting my Tuesday evening update on where things stand.

If we are going by previous years...why did FSU get jumped in the polls when they havent lost in 2 years?

They started the year number 1. They haven't played well enough to keep that ranking.

They also havent lost.
Their wins just haven't been impressive.

Last year they blew other ACC teams out. This year, other than Wake Forest, that hasn't been the case.
If they'd had some blow outs and had beaten ND more decisively (some still believe that it was really a loss) it would be a different story.

The season never would end today.

Kaiser is right...

Bracketology is someone else attempting to predict what the committee will do...

This is the committee actually saying what they would do if the season were to end today...

The hoops equivalent would be to have the tournament committee get together, starting in January or February, and releasing weekly brackets.

Its just annoying because when SEC games are super close its because ALL the teams are "amazing". When FSU has close conference games its NOT respected because the ACC is has this BS cloud over it. It isn't competitive..its cause the whole conference "sucks". I can't stand this theory.

Perception is reality. The ACC needs more teams to make OOC noise to change the perception. SU didn't do its part this year.

Yep. There are lots of legitimate gripes to make about the SEC, but they do win a huge chunk of their OOC games against P5 opponents.

The ACC loses a huge chunk of them.

The constant is "if the season ended today." That isn't a thing. It's not a thing for Joey Brackets, it's not a thing for this playoff committee. It should be meaningless. What I dislike is that I think the attention it gets makes it matter in a way that's different from the polls.

That drives me crazy. FSU is being compared to 2013 FSU when it's convenient and works against them and should be compared to the other teams in 2014. Another thing people don't mention is that if you are playing 50% winning type teams or better every week you have to battle every week and MSU has had a chance to take basically 4 weeks off playing bad teams along with ironically being voted into the top spot during their bye week. MSU is #1 so when Bama beats them they (the committee) can argue that Bama beat the #1 team.

Oh and MSU struggled vs a bad Arkansas team and didn't lose a beat.
